External Hard Drive trouble and using a MAC

It is asking if I want to reformat, and hell no I don't.

What do I do to save the data?

It is also not working with my Blu-Ray player. My other one is.

Going to reboot the mac now and see if it changes anything.

I changed the USB cable and it still has a box that says:

Initialize, Ignore or Eject. I will not do the first at all.

It takes like 3 minutes for that box to even come up.

Also it can be seen with Disk Utility, but Verify and Repair Disk options are greyed out.

The Mac should be able to read both. I don't think it can write to NTFS. That might be your issue. FAT32 is fine as long as you don't have files over 4gb. Use exFAT if you need that. Try posting your questions at: https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_yosemite (Go back a level if you are using Maverics). Or, http://apple.stackexchange.com/

For the Blu-Ray I'd probably look up the exact model on NewEgg and then go to the Customer Q&A and see if you can get help there.

If you figure this stuff out please let me know. I'm trying to learn more about OS X. I've been messing with it for 3 years now and haven't learned much, because there is rarely ever a problem.
 
I think that something is somehow failing in the HDD, but not sure what.

Maybe it got a jarred connection during a write.
 
I think it's very likely you have problems with the electronics in the external hard drive.

The one good thing here is that in my experience it's the USB -> drive interface that's the culprit, not the drive itself. I have always been able to remove the drive from the enclosure and read it directly.
 
I broke open the enclosure and put it into my adapter and still a problem.

I will try with a windows machine if possible.

Way back i used a utility on a PC that changed some header that got a drive to work again.

Sounds like you have something important on that drive. I would have chucked it by now. I got screwed once and then swore to only use Raid 1.
 
Truly we live in an age of wonders.

When I was young, finding decent porn was practically impossible, because porn of any standard was so hard to come by (to coin a phrase).

Now we are far less hard up (to coin another phrase), and the difficulty with finding decent porn is that there is so much of it - and so much of it is just not that good.

Of all the things that I want to backup and actively backup, I'm amazed that anyone would be concerned by their Porn.

I'm genuinely concerned about having redundant copies and backups of my photos because that's data that's impossible to recover if it exists in a single version on a hard-drive that kicks he bucket.

But porn? Shit, I can get wanking material within seconds of having a phone, tablet or laptop as long as it's got WiFi.

I recall back in the day (mid 1990s) having a friend who attended a university where internet access was available to all students who provided me with my Internet porn. I actually had a hidden box of floppy disks with porno pics on them.
 
That was a joke. Lots of other important stuff and only a smidge of porn.

For me it's a matter of efficiency. I have to wade through an enormous amount of shit on the tubes before I find something that I like. Saving the few good ones is worth the effort. I have more fun digging for "Beautiful Women Photos" for TFT than looking for wanking material.
 
I did something like this before to get a HDD to work again on an XP machine:

two problems:
1. I am using a mac.
2. It is a laptop so it is connecting via USB.

Wish I still had a PC tower.

I even got a program called Onyx for MacOS and it doesn't help.

gonna find a buddy with a PC tower or take it to a professional.
