In the US, the term "badass" is used as a compliment. Even if it's aimed at criminals, it conveys an admiration of cleverness or fearlessness or defiance.

Some on facebook are arguing that it's an insult in the US. Is there any pocket of our popular culture that uses the word "badass" as an insult? Other than sarcasm, if I heard someone call someone a badass as an insult, I'd think they were probably not from the US.

What do you say?

If "Rocket Man" can be used as an insult, then why not "badass"? :D

lol. Well, mainly because people would misunderstand you. Like if you called the Rocket Man "badass" people here would just think you're an idiot. :D

There are a lot of regional dialects and a lot of subcultures with their own slang, so who the fuck knows?

I've never heard of anyone using "badass" as an insult, but my answer is hardly definitive.

Do you think she's "badass"? (This is a picture of a woman in Santiago, Chile, being defiant during a pro-democracy protest)

Oh, yeah.

My definition is "someone not to be messed with". Not an insult.

She is genuinely badass. Kind of reminds me of:
