Hello? Police? There's a black man in a firefighter uniform inspecting homes in my neighborhood!

Oh, protect me from the black firefighter! I'm scurred! What if he protects my home from a fire?

Are we allowed to call this racist? Or am I going to trigger the usual fragile snowflakes by calling this racist?

Whoops, the subject/title should say "firefighter uniform" rather than "police uniform." Sorry.

I'd likely call the local 311 if a guy (any guy) claimed to be a firefighter inspecting my yard or home. That is out of the blue around here.

Thank you for making me look slightly less stupid!

There was a fucking firetruck in the street. Who the fuck buys a hundred thousand dollar firetruck to case middle class homes? If a thief can afford a hundred thousand dollar truck as a prop, then presumably he is stealing things that no one living in a subdivision could possibly afford.

The fact that this police report sounds reasonable to you is exactly the problem.

Me, too. But I wonder if California is different because of all the dryness and fires they get. According to the article there is an annual vegetation inspection of homes and that could be to ensure they are not out of control with dry wood/brush etc. In my town, we have a different sort of thing where bureaucrats could show up next to your property if you live next to Wetlands. These bureaucrats may have id or drive a city vehicle. If I were to see one next to my property I wouldn't be suspicious but if they were on my property I might be until after asking and getting a response and noting their official uniform and vehicle in which case I would no longer be suspicious. In this case, though, the guy had id and and uniform. Even after showing his id, he was told it wasn't good enough.

That's right. I mean, fake id, fake firefighter costume. Gazillion dollar truck...all to steal a laptop or two. That's a sophisticated outfit, but on top of that what we don't know is that Californians in the area may be used to firefighters doing the annual vegetation check besides all this.

They really take out their fire trucks just to do inspections? I would expect they would take regular fire department car because for an inspection there is no need to haul all the ladders and hoses and pumps around.

Wasting money is their specialty. However, they don't do that kind of shit around here. Talk about grounds for being shot!--white or black!!!

In this case they did.

But even if there was no firetruck, why do you think it is reasonable to assume that the person was a thief?

Could it be the color of their skin?

Thank you for bringing that up.

Blacks are much more likely to be shot, even when they are completely innocent and over all orders. That is why calling the cops on cases like this are malicious and potentially deadly.

But thanks for defending this, no matter how flimsy your excuses. That proves my point nicely.

If that is true, then everything I wrote in post#5 is relevant in which case it is still a problem. Right?

There's a good reason to take their truck--if a call comes in they can respond. If they were in an ordinary car they would have to drive back to the station first.

Around here, fire fighters spend much of their shift waiting for an alarm call. While they are waiting, they get sent to do various non-urgent tasks, like inspections - and they take the fire truck with them, so that if an emergency call comes in, they don't need to go back to the fire station first - they can just stop what they are doing and head straight to the emergency.

The marginal cost of taking the big truck is more than offset by the savings involved in having them do something useful with their waiting time, so that the department doesn't need to employ separate staff to do the non-urgent jobs, while the on-call crew play cards or pump iron waiting for a call out.

Or, ya know, maybe they take the big truck around because it bolsters their credibility. "Anyone" can make a normal car into a prop fire truck car for social engineering purposes. An actual fire truck is a lot harder to do that with. And what does it matter? This entire post of yours seems to be a distraction and an attempt to shoulder away conversation from something you can't just outright attack into a tangent you can attack and then use those attacks to erode attention on the initial bad act: assuming that a black man can't be a firefighter and must instead be a criminal.

Derec is running out of things to complain about here... instead of just saying, "Yeah... calling the cops was dumb."

Yes, they do. Fire vehicles need to be driven on a daily basis, as a part of regular inspection and maintenance. Inspection tours are good opportunities to train drivers in non-emergency conditions, before the real thing.

Once a year, there would be a fire engine in the parking lot of my store, while a fire chief checked to see that all the exits were properly marked. This is a common sight in most cities.

This makes me wonder if this has happened before to black fire inspectors

article said:
But on May 16, a resident grew concerned that Moore might be an imposter. Firefighter Megan Bryan told the Chronicle that she was an acting officer that day and received a call. She said she was frustrated because no one ever calls the police on white firefighters for doing an inspection.
