Amazon.com Inc Chief Executive Jeff Bezos posted a blog on Thursday saying the National Enquirer’s parent company American Media threatened to blackmail him with the threat of publishing “intimate photos.” Bezos said he declined to make a false public statement at American Media’s direction.
....

Oh this is going to be fun. National Inquirer is picking a fight with the world's wealthiest man. Layers are going to swarm N.I. like flies on turd. Will Bezos eventually do a Peter Thiel on N.I. like Thiel did to Gawker? Will somebody have to do time in federal prison? What a bunch of idiots.

It's not just Bezos who was blackmailed by AMI.

Ronan Farrow said Thursday that he and “at least one other prominent journalist” who had reported on the National Enquirer and President Trump received blackmail threats from the tabloid’s parent company, American Media Inc., over their work.

Farrow’s allegation came just hours after Amazon chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos published a remarkable public post on Medium accusing the National Enquirer of attempting to extort and blackmail him by threatening to publish intimate photos unless he stopped investigating the publication. (Bezos owns The Washington Post.)

In a tweet Thursday night, Farrow wrote that he and the unnamed journalist “fielded similar ‘stop digging or we’ll ruin you’ blackmail efforts from AMI.” Last April, Farrow published a story in the New Yorker about the Enquirer’s “catch and kill” practice — in which stories are buried by paying off sources — that benefited Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Man, the dumbest thing they did here was to go after him over nudes. Like seriously? I'm sure there are enough people with MY nudes that if I got big for my britches, would worm out of the woodwork, and more power to them. I have a pretty great body, and they would come off as pervs because when the pictures were taken, I looked like I was 15.

Jeff Bezos isn't exactly unattractive. Having his dick pics in the world isn't bad publicity. Now another certain tiny mushroom...

The owner of the Enquirer agreed to talk to prosecutors about all the Trump stuff. As I understand plea deals, that means cooperating with them about any potential crimes they ask him about or the deal is off, correct? That means that if someone asks him about this, he has to either tell them about any blackmail the Enquirer has done under his watch or go to prison.

That's a pretty accurate summary based on my also non-lawyerly opinion.

One of the reporters I saw, made an observation that Jeff Bezos was an unusual target for the National Inquirer. He said most NI readers wouldn't recognize Bezos by name or face. This is what made the Bezos thing seem more like a political hit job than regular celebrity gossip.

The "government entity" description is about as vague as it gets. What the fuck is that? It's hard to imagine a Federal Agency handing surveillance information to the National Inquirer. It's even more difficult to imagine the FBI, Secret Service, or any other Federal "entity" would give this kind of material to the White House. This makes it more likely someone in the White House obtained it from a private source and forwarded it to Pecker. Since all of this was conducted through email and text, it's automatically a wire fraud charge and a real Federal entity has to look into it.

Bezos and Pecker have one thing in common, they both know what sells newspapers. It makes one wonder why Pecker didn't see this one coming at him like a bean ball. Bezos has replaced Bill Gates as our current "Guy who made money where other people failed."

That's a pretty prestigious position. Although Trump might hate Bezos because he owns the Washington Post, it's more likely because Bezos has actually made a fortune through his shrewd business abilities. Now Bezos has told the world, "Want to see my naked ass? Buy today's Washington Post."

very much so

A lot of speculation on this, but Rachel Maddow had an interesting take on this, suggesting that the "government entity" is Saudi Arabia as a favor to Trump.

I would love to know what America Media Inc considers to be "good faith negotiations" with Bezos. I think we're going to find out pretty soon.

I suspect that eventually Bezo's lawyers are going to shake the AMI executives like terriers the size of tyrannosaurs to get to the truth of these matters in discovery. We will someday know where these pics came from, and who decided this blackmail was a good idea.
And there may be other shake downs and blackmail attempts. Ronan Farrow. So someday, there may be some RICO charges for AMI.
