Bloomberg pays fines for 32,000 felons in Florida so they can vote | TheHill
Florida passed a law in 2018 reinstating voting rights for felons that dictated they could register only if they pay all fines, fees and restitution — sometimes totaling more than $1,000 — owed to the government.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers Florida, last week ruled to uphold the law.

Fees, sure pay those. Fines... aren't fines in lieu of more jail time?

But he’s not paying restitution. Bad optics if he paid a rapist’s restitution to the victim.

I am concerned that Democrats are so infatuated with the felon voting block.
If they paid for their crimes, then why not let them vote?

Or are you afraid that they would not vote Republican?

I mean, it's a pretty big no-brainer that the people injured by retributive justice would probably provide a meaningful perspective on criminal justice and reform.

Really, I'm infatuated with the idea of getting good data for meaningful reform of ineffective criminal justice systems. We're currently ignoring one of the most important sources of data on the subject!

I have been hoping that Bloomberg would pay their fines. It's insane that a felon who had paid his dues to society, as the saying goes, aren't permitted to vote. And, certain felons such as those convicted of murder still can't vote once they get out of prison. The Republican just love to suppress the vote of the powerless.

Not every state forbids those who commit a felony from voting once they serve their sentence. Plus, the Florida voters wanted to allow felons to vote once they are released from prison. I thought we lived in a country that was sort of a democracy.

Personally I agree. Once they are done with their sentence (including parole) and paid their fines, they should be able to vote as a matter of fairness.
No reason to pay part of their debt to society for them though. Also, some Dems like Bernie thinks even felons currently in prison should get to vote, even terrorists serving life sentences. I totally disagree with that.

Or are you afraid that they would not vote Republican?
I am not a Republican, and plan to vote for Uncle Joe, so I am not afraid. I am just amused that Democrats seem to be so certain that they have the felon vote in the bag.

WaPo says that this charity is very narrowly focused on Black and Hispanic ex felons. White guys are on their own?

So if other people are delinquent on their taxes or state fees, can they vote?

They're counted in the census. Bodies in the state that impact the number of representatives in the government, representing them and their interests. Why shouldn't they have a voice in that representation? I seem to remember that being a big deal for Ben Franklin, his posse.

In Florida, you can be delinquent in property taxes and state taxes, and vote.

You can be delinquent in your court mandated child support payments and vote.

Haven't paid police ticket fines? Don't worry, you can vote.

Haven't you heard of White white privilege? When it comes time to pay the fine, the white guys just have to nod and wink at the clerk and their fine gets stamped PAID. Sheesh, get with the program dude.

Would be interesting to see the reaction if a group focused on only paying for white felons to vote.

Whitey locks up disproportionate amount of blacks and hispanics for misdemeanors. Disproportionate amount of whites stay out of prison and maintain their voting status.

Racists: "Why aren't they helping white felons?!?!"
Also Racists "White privilege doesn't exist"

And there’s the hypocritical reaction we’ve come to know and love.
