A good vehicle chase scene can be good because of the great action/special effects in it, and/or because of the surrounding drama and context of it (even if the action/special effects was nothing significant).

The Matrix Reloaded - Highway Fight Scene
Part 1
Part 2

The first two Terminator films (at least, I do not recall any others) had some good ones:
Terminator 1: Car chase in parking lot

Terminator 2:
Motorcycle chase
Truck chase
Helicopter chase

A lot of the movie "Speed" was somewhat like a vehicle chase scene, though not oriented to one person trying to catch another; instead aimed at maintaining a minimum bus speed of 50 mph.

What are some of your faves? Any from other comic book movies, gangsta movies? TV shows?

Bullitt - Hit men chasing a cop, lose him, suddenly realize he's on their tail chasing them. No dialogue, just screaming thru San Francisco

Blues Brothers - the get-me-outta-the-parking-lot mall chase and
the final cops/National Guard/highway patrol/Nazis (Illinois)/rednecks/fiance (jilted)/SWAT team chase. Which IIRC set a new record for cars trashed in the course of a scene.

Live And Let Die - Bond, speed boats, swamp.

You can't get much better than the car chase scenes in John Frankenheimer's spy thriller Ronin. They're considered some of the best.

The Bourne Ultimatum
I like where Jason Bourne takes time to consult a city map.

The Peacemaker
Good use of local terrain. Using your rims to catch a car on fire is a nice touch.

Toy Story
I've seen this a hundred times, and I still can't stop laughing.

Probably the slow chase of OJ Simpson. Here in Los Angeles we get cops chasing cars on tv frequently and some of them are really good. I find movie car chases are usually quite boring as they go on too long. The car chases in the Bourne movies are horrible. Bullitt car chase was pretty good as is the one in The Rock, both filmed San Francisco.

I second the scene from Bourne Ultimatum, top notch stuff

Another favorite of mine, on a somewhat lighter note though still actually a decent action sequence:

"Far out!"

Also, does the latter half of Spielberg's film "Duel" count as one long vehicle chase scene? Young Politesse was completely terrified of big rigs on the freeway for years after running across that one on cable once, I should really give it a rewatch some time.

The Italian Job (2003 version) - small cars, not huge speeds, but driving in subways helps make the difference

Die Hard with a Vengeance - Rather short, but MacClaine trying to get from uptown to downtown in about as reasonable and believable way as could be thought of.

Otherwise, high speed chases, it's been done to death.

I'll toss in a hated one... the boat chase in Faceoff. It is the moment when the film went from from action romp to flat out jumping the shark silliness.

It's been awhile since I have seen any of the Transformers movies (actually...think I only saw the first, which was good). Did any of those car-focused action movies have good car chase scenes?

To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) had cops and (supposed) criminals in a chase where they were going the wrong way down the freeway, straight into oncoming traffic. I don't think that had been done before, although it's a cliche now and even shows up in comedies like Identity Thief. Very well done in '85.

If boat chases count, I always sort of liked the one in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Just such a wacky yet tropically predictable direction for things to go, and unlike most chase scenes filmed in Venice, out on the bay rather than up and down the canals. Some priceless faces from both the main character and the gal he's starting to suspect as a double agent, because she is uniquely surrounded by enemies on all sides and cannot explain why without outing herself. They're being pursued by people who hate the Nazis as much as Indy does, but he doesn't know it til the end, and doesn't know he's helping the Nazis until even later. Great movie.

The other big chase scene in that one - from zeppelin to roadster to on foot to a flock of birds on a beach - isn't bad either, especially since Sean Connery has made his appearance by that point.

Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior

In the climax of the movie the tanker truck which is now retrofitted for war is chased by the Lord of the Wastelands and his henchmen.

Seriously, they could just do that final act and stretch it out to a movie on its own and I wouldn't complain. Why hasn't anyone thought of doing that?

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes has the slowest car chase. Both cars start to break down, and Finletter, who's parachute is caught in a car door, uses it to pull the car to keep up with the villain.

Return of the Killer Tomatoes kinda has the shortest. Bad guy says he is going to chase after the other characters, but crashes his truck at about 10 feet on.

Might be the only chase scene I've seen where the chaser and chasee both blink their lights to warn other drivers. How thoughtful, and yeah, pretty well done.

I was duly impressed by the car chase in Shoot To Kill. FBI agent after a diamond thief. The director clearly told one stunt driver, the thief, 'All the flourishes, man. Fishtailing, skidding, turns on two wheels, all the movie expectations.ç
Then to the driver of the FBI car, "No drama. As professionally as you can, do your best to stay in control AND stay within one car length of the lead car's bumper." Interesting comparing the handling of the two.

Point Break The bank robbery scene where they're wearing the presidents mask. My fav.
