Since 1950, out of a total of 115 000 French priests, some of them managed to abuse 216 000 children.

Those are absolutely mind blowing numbers. It also says in the article that it's a low balled number of victims.

I thought I couldn't get any more shocked, than I had been already, about the whole Catholic boy rape circus. I was wrong. Oh, boy was I wrong.

The number I heard recently in the news is the Vatican has shielded about 3000 pedophiles going back to the 1950s.

Is it any wonder that sex abusers and pedophiles would be drawn to an institution where closeting everything by way of the tradition of the confessional are drawn to the Catholic church? This has been known since the thing began! Info has been around for nearly the entire history of the mother church! It's finally proliferating at godspeed (pun intended) now because of the boom and velocity of technology, the information highway, and social media. Obviously.

The only rational thing to do is condemn the guilty, incarcerate them, shame them, and keep doing it; but should we be surprised? I'm not.

Anyone ever take a look at The Ring and the Book by that nice kid, Bob Browning? Good stuff.

True devilry often hides in plain sight. Sometimes with fancy clothes and lots of money, and sometimes with dirt and rags. But true evil requires some kind of power: strength, or leverage; and the more power, the greater the potential evil, the worse the torment, the more deep and lasting the harm.

And what that nice poet Keats wrote is nice but untrue:

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever,
Its loveliness increases, it will never
Pass into nothingness, but still will keep
A bower quiet for us and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing..."

and/or:

"Beauty is Truth, Truth Beauty; that is all
Ye know on Earth, and all ye need to know."

which reminds me of something somebody else wrote:

"Cruel is a thing that shines,
When it decides to strike.
The poet turns to find
His heart laid waste by night."
- it's about unrequited love, and a rotten marriage. Nearly killed him.

In 8th grade we were shown films of rlgiious orders and given promotional literature.

A kid goes through high school and to seminary and without any life or sexual experience becomes a celibate priest. What do you expect, you can't turn off hormones, genes, and sexual desire.

An ex nun in the 80s or 90s wrote a tell all book. I didn't read it but listened to a review. She claimed sex between nuns and priests is an open secret.

It is an impossible situation. The answer, let priests get married.

Just in Australia the Catholic church has a grave shortage of priests. If they allowed married priests then that would open up far more candidates. Probably not enough to fill all vacancies but certainly provide a substantial number.

Yeah, they don't seem real interested in "big tent" appeal, or they'd not only allow priests to marry, they'd recruit Wiccans and atheists...

Priests should be permitted to marry and have romantic relationships, but I don't see how that will keep the pedophiles from assaulting children. I guess that any large organization that permits adults to be in charge of children is going to attract a percentage of pedophiles. It's occurred in schools, the Boy Scouts, and other versions of religions. A year or two ago, it was discovered that both children and women had been sexually abused by quite a few leaders in evangelical churches. Some of these pastors were married, so marriage isn't going to solve this problem.

Besides the issue of sexual abuse, the church is greedy too...

I still aspire to be the first atheist pope. Pope George Ringo I.

Lol. But - there's always a but -

I am reasonably sure there have been lots of closet atheist popes. Plus even a couple closet stand-up comedians who rose to pope. Need I mention Pope Hilarious? No, I know he was a stand-up guy (leastways I rekkin), but it MIGHT indicate a god of some kind who's a closet stand-up comic?

A Kathleen Madigan fan?
And, no 'O' in Hilarius.

Never heard of her. I saw the name once while looking up certain specific popes. Naturally I cracked up.

Sorry for the 'u'! Maybe it was a half conscious attempt to appease those easily triggered Canucks, Aussies, Kiwis, and especially those haughty self-righteous, sniffing, John Cleese-imitating Brits! :flooffrown:

Edit: d'oh! I mean sorry for the 'o' !

Kathleen Madigan slays!! Best introduction to her style: An American Idiot in Paris, which was online last time I checked. It's one of her longest bits, and it gets across her act perfectly. She's had cd's and dvd's out, but they're mostly O/P and cost a fortune to get.

American Idiot, huh? Well, looks like that might be right up my alley (not that one! That's an exit only!).

Sounds like bilby might like it also. <<< Humour!

ETA: by the way, what does "O/P" mean exactly? Yagooglebing, the great Oracle, does not speak of this artifact.

Do you mean: (pick one [1])

  • Operating Procedure
  • Opening Post (poster)
  • Outmoded Protocols
  • Outdated Product(s)
  • Outlying Pejorative-amusement-purveyors (i.e. raw, {or otherwise} unfiltered stand-up comics and/or humorists [including but not restricted to screenplay writers, playwrights, comedy writers, popes, peanut g...etc, etc, etc&]}) etc...AKA: OUAP: pronounced whip. [NO! NOT THAT WAY! the "h' is silent. It's wip, not wwwwwwHHHHHHip, you idiot!].
  • Outlandish People (including funny people?)
  • Outlander-type Poets (Robert Burns in a time machine perhaps? Or Mel Gibson playing the anonymous author of Beowulf?)
  • etc, etc, etc&... (ad infinutum* ...

* no really - God had to invent infinity for this exact reason: to accommodate lawyers, philosophers, writers, silly people, poets, scientists, etc, etc, etc&)

By two mechanisms. First, what Tigers! said: the Catholic church has a grave shortage of priests. It's world-wide, and it's a big part of the reason the RCC hierarchy keeps dealing with sexual assault reports by transferring priests to new parishes when they become locally notorious, instead of defrocking them or assigning them to jobs away from children.

And second, because the rule against priests marrying and having romantic relationships with women selectively disincentivizes* men with typical sexual tastes from choosing priesthood as a career. This elevates the percentage of priesthood applicants with every variety of atypical sexual taste, including pedophilia.

(* The RCC of course also has a rule against atypical sexual behavior in priests, but that isn't a comparable disincentive because that rule also applies to nonpriests; and in any event there's already a cultural prohibition on expressing atypical sexual tastes, regardless of the RCC's take on the matter. It's only men who prefer adult women as sex partners who are offered a better alternative than the priesthood.)

Over here as well.

From reporting the RCC has shifted its focus from the west to less developed areas like places in South America. Poor and undereducated susceptible superstitious people.

Over here there is an old Italian stereotype. An Italian family with 5 or 6 kids, one is selected to be a priest or nun. A point of family honor and reputation.

Culture matters. That's not going to fix it. A simpler and better solution is to have a rule against Catholic priests being in the same room alone with children. They can afford to hire secular staff for the religious education of kids. They don't need a priest to teach kids about Jonah and the Whale. Everybody wins.
