I've seen a LOT of movies. My family actually had a movie service even before HBO came out. There are so many second and third rate (or lower) films that were enjoyable, but have been mostly forgotten. Well, how about we share some of the ones we do remember, so everyone can either say "oh yea, I saw that!" or "hmm.. I'll have to check that out sometime"

To start off, I was recently reminded of The Big Bus - parody of disaster movies in which someone tries to sabotage a new gigantic atomic powered bus.

The Girl, The Gold Watch, and Everything - guy's rich uncle dies, leaving him only a gold watch. Some business rivals suspect there is more to it and watch him to find out what is up. Turns out the watch can stop time. This film even had a sequel.

It Came From Hollywood - movie about low rated movies, hosted by Gilda Radner, John Candy, Dan Aykroyd, Cheech & Chong, and it is where I first heard of the Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes movies

Back in 1999 I was on an extended work trip and on the weekend I just walked to a mall across the street from my hotel and saw whatever movie happened to be playing that looked mildly interesting to me to pass the time. I saw the movie The Thirteenth Floor. It was a sci-fi movie about people living in a virtual, simulated world. I really enjoyed the movie but it had the great misfortune of coming out the same year as the Matrix.

Looks like it might be interesting. Got four stars on IMDB and produced by Roland Emerich (sp?).

In the early 80s I was working swing shift, and watching cable movies when I got home at about 2 AM. A couple of box-office disasters that went “straight to cable” (as we used to say before streaming) I thought were really good, and watched several times. Both were comedies.

The first, Honky Tonk Freeway, had an all-star cast and I thought pretty clever writing. The plot followed several carloads of people driving along different interstate highways until they all end up in the same small town in Florida. Hilarity ensues. I’ll have to check it out again one of these days. As I think about it, some of the humor may not have been completely PC, but I’ll have to see when/if I ever watch it again.

The second, Used Cars, from about the same time, had the kind of sardonic humor I like. I notice Wikipedia says it has since become a cult favorite, so maybe it’s well-known now.

It's not quite the same thing, but here are seven films that rank high on my personal list but do not have particularly good IMDB ratings.

Across the Universe (1970)
Bound (1996)
Spy Game (2001)
The Gods must be Crazy (1980)
The Interpreter (2005)
Good Thief (2002)
Third Miracle (1999)

Miracle Mile, which starts out like a meet cute and then, when our hero misses a date with the heroine, takes a hard turn into thriller when he seemingly intercepts a phone call announcing that the US is going to be hit with nukes in maybe 70 minutes.

The rest of the movie takes place in real time as our hero tries to find his girlfriend and get the hell out of Los Angeles.

I liked Used Cars. Got it on my list of lesser known 80's movies to recommend.

I probably should include it here:
of course some of these I haven't seen in decades, and may contain jokes that might be cringey or offensive today.

Moon Over Parador was a pretty good movie.

The Negotiator always comes to mind as I rarely ever hear anyone mention it, but it is a very solid film.

It’s not like anyone is going to come up with something better than weird orgies, wild parties and unleashed passions. So I declare myself the outright winner of this thread.

Breaking Away is a great little film that came out the year I graduated high school, so was of great interest to me and my friends. It was the "sleeper" hit that summer. I saw it multiple times in the theater. I recently bumped into it while switching channels recently, and still holds up. It doesn't seem to get a lot of attention these days. Goes to show that you don't need a huge budget, woke themes and/or special effects to make a good movie. I wish Hollywood would figure that out.

If you could see what I hear based on the life of a blind musician. Probably most memorable scene is him and his friends getting pulled over by the police, and the police asking "He's blind?!" "yup" "Then why the hell is he driving!!??" "because he is the only one who is sober"

Saw this a long time ago, and I remember enjoying it. Plan to check it out again soon.

My Twentieth Century (1989).
A Hungarian film about twin sisters who were separated when they were young.
The bulk of the story takes place when they were in their early 20s (in 1900). One of the twins has become a ‘high end’ con-artist and party girl, the other twin is an idealistic revolutionary.
The male lead thinks that they are the same woman and is very confused by her behavior.
A rather surreal but well done movie. (Took me forever to find it on DVD)

This brings to mind some version of Moll Flanders. It must have been the four part series I had seen. The movie does not look correct. I recall a bit of nudity and Moll occasionally breaking the fourth wall, saying "Well what would you do?". Beyond that, I recall I enjoyed it.

I think that was a PBS Masterpiece Theatre production. One of my friends was taking calls for their pledge drive, and people kept calling to talk about Moll Flanders’ boobs.

My Blue Heaven isn't exactly under the radar, but from what I've read, many didn't enjoy it as much as I did. Personally, I think it was one of Steve Martin's best films, that along with Parenthood. I think I read that they were pondering Arnold for Martin's character. OMFG! Luckily, Arnold skipped out for Kindergarten Cop. Martin was going to play the face, but ended in the heel role which worked much better, as Moranis was natural as Coopersmith (he doesn't even appear to be acting... in a good way).

I would say, I did notice an issue with the film, because they kids complain about the ball field after it rains... and it almost never rains there. In fact, the movie even says so in jest.
