Split City Vs Country Politics

To notify a split thread.
Again, zero evidence. You're keeping up your perfect record!!
Oh, I disagree. Generally speaking, everything JH says is overflowing with evidence.

[goes back to watching Fox News]

Fox News doesn't call out Joe Biden as a racist. People like me are "the help" to him.
What makes you say that?
Don't bother. It'll be like trying to nail jello to a wall.

1. There are billions in federal dollars now available for rural broadband. It's happening in my backyard now. *Minimum download speed available is 250 Mbps.
2. Due to supply chain issues caused by the pandemic, tension with China, and Russia being Russia, there is a reshoring/nearshoring of manufacturing going on right now.
3. Lesser known is the Biden administration pushing remote work for two million federal jobs. USAJOBS is now awash in these positions. This could entice private employers to follow suit.

I think all this has the potential to change what we now see as "rural America". In seven years when NGOs analyze the causes for the transformation of rural America, this is what they'll find.

*Actual download/upload speed: 245.46/248.85.

I have seen for years urbanite distain towards rural and small town dwellers
you keep saying that, and everyone seems to be fine with just letting you get away with it, but i call bullshit.
'city people' don't have disdain for rural people, because 'city people' don't have any thoughts about rural people *period*.

the only city people with any sort of active disdain for rural people are former rural people who now live in a big city.
if you grew up in an urban area and never spent time in a truly bumfuck region and have no experience with it, you literally don't think about those people.

this whole "nyeh city people are so disdainful of country folk" meme is just a combination of classic conservative projection (blaming others for the thing you're doing) and buying into a narrative you saw on TV that doesn't exist in real life.

Think about it: the two coasts disregard the rest of the country
and therein lies the truth - there's no disdain, there's simply disregard, mostly born of ignorance (the innocent kind) and when it isn't a complete lack of acknowledgement entirely it's disdain of rural folk for being absolute horrendous pieces of shit and not because they live in a small town.

'small town' culture is an equally disgusting and degenerate mass of bullshit as what you see from the ultra rich - completely delusional idiots with no concept of life outside of their own little bubble, mired in rigid hypocrisy and fantasy in a pathetic attempt to force their narrow view of reality on everyone else.

there's nothing inherently wrong with living in a small town, but the entire concept of a small town is predicated on something that no longer exists.
small self-contained and self-sustaining rural communities in the U.S. started out as leeches suckling at the engorged varicose veins of plantations and/or gold mines. they sprouted up around some kind of economic backbone that artificially supported them, and were only able to exist on that scale due to the outside resources brought in by that backbone.
when the slaves and the gold went away these towns all withered up and barely survived until the manufacturing boom hit, and that only happened because they were all so poor and desperate that it was profitable to use them as factory slave labor.
when that went away because there are even cheaper brown people in other countries, the towns immediately died again.

the big fat lie that every small town in the U.S. in the present day is founded on is that it's a self-contained system... that the town doesn't need the 'outside world' and can get by solely on its own local ecosystem.
and that's probably true for a small town that contents itself with subsistence living-off-the-land and local trade, but here's the big fat secret rural types don't want you to know that makes the whole thing fall apart: none of them want that.
small town people want infrastructure, water treatment, electricity, daily mail service, high speed internet, HBO, and a walmart.
they want an urban life, they just don't want to have to be around other people or to generate any kind of viable economic activity to make bringing it all to them worth anyone's investment to bother with.

and so they sit in their dusty bumfuck nowhere collection of shacks and bemoan 'big city' people, because those evil 'big city' people have bent over fucking backwards to bring the modern world to them and they resent it because fucked up inbred protestant idiocy makes them think being given something means they are 'lesser than.'

Trumpism appeals to the disaffected wherever they live,
this is such BS, this is like saying that cannibalism appeals to anyone with cancer, because they have cancer and want a cure for it, and cannibalism is.... something something?

the absolute fact is that rural idiots vote republican, and republicans do absolutely NOTHING in any way shape or form to materially improve their living conditions.
democrats verifiably DO improve their living conditions, but by doing so initiate some kind of fucktarded hillbilly vengeance pact against the very people who are trying to help them, because that "hard work" ethic you're so fond of makes these communities incapable of accepting the economic and infrastructure assistance they require in order to live in the modern world without going completely ape shit over the fact that someone handed them something.

rural people actively vote to destroy their own lives, and they do it year after year and they are screamingly proud of it.
they aren't struggling with economic hardship and just wanting to live a safe and stable american dream life... they fucked themselves into desperation, and now they're trying to cut the throat of anyone who tries to help them.
Yeah zero disdain. Coming through loud and clear.
You haven't really provided any reason to not show a significant portion of the rural fucktards anything but disdain. I've lived all over the US (and in a few other countries) and the midwest is home to a significant portion of what's wrong with the world.

Look at the voting breakdown Jimmy provided in the abortion vote in KS. Then get back to us.

The Midwest is home to a significant portion of ignorance and control by parasitic propagandizing.

That doesn't warrant disdain, it warrants open access to sound information.

I think a few decades of unfettered internet access has proven that to be untrue.
"Unfettered" is a raging lie.

I didn't have good internet access for a while, and "Facebook" doesn't count as sound information.

I mean, in a school, from teachers, who have defensible information based on testing and rigor.

Adults don't have teachers, they have the internet.

And I spent enough time in the midwest to know that it's mostly willful ignorance.

Many rural areas do not have good access to internet services. In my area, I can go just a few miles out of town and have zero phone reception until I get into a more open area without large hills blocking signal. So that’s part of the issue.

Another issue is exactly the attitudes expressed in this thread. People in rural areas are no different—not less intelligent or less caring or less creative or less patriotic than people in urban centers. They do have different points of view ( note: multiple points of view). One issue is that big city folks are always calling them very ugly names ( see this thread). Another is that government ( state, federal) impose policies and make policies that are not in the best interests of rural people. Or are contrary to what people want. And when politics are played with farm programs, it creates a lot of uncertainty and instability for farmers—which ripples through the entire community.

In my home state: An interstate was built through my county when I was a kid. In order to built it, they took big swaths of farmland through imminent domain. One of the farms they acquired parts of belonged to a family member. Oh, they were financially compensated but it ruined most of the farmland and changed a very beautiful vista from a lovely farmhouse into a view of the interstate. That land had been in the family for 100 years or more. I understand that means nothing to most city dwellers but it means a tremendous amount to people who lose their land. Did the interstate need to be built? Of course it did. But multiply that experience many times over and you get one tiny inkling of why people resent people from the outside imposing what is best for other people on them. Changing routes of highways and interstates makes and breaks towns and communities.

So, you're moving the goalposts from "internet" to "good internet" - which is interesting, because I recall using a 36kbs modem in the mid 90s and somehow I didn't turn into a racist idiot who sought to ruin my own life.

Here's a simple fact that lots and lots and LOTS of people just like you (and my mother, who proved this point by spending her life in a decently progressive college town before moving out to the middle of nowhere and rapidly becoming a bigoted neo-libertarian piece of shit through some kind of Rural Stupidity Osmosis) really don't want to admit:
If you're *not* already a dim-witted bigot and you see a racist propagandistic lie on the internet, your reaction is to go "Huh, well that seems like bullshit" and then either discard the notion entirely, or do some googling to verify that you can debunk it.

But if you're inclined to being a nit-wit who wants to believe that blacks are genetically inferior and Mexicans are stealing your jobs, etc etc, seeing a "news article" on Facebook that affirms that view is something you just automatically believe without question and then start trying to tell others is the truth.

A splotchy internet connection is not an excuse, the fundamental reason that "the internet" is a boogeyman right now is because blaming "the internet" is way more comfortable for certain people than acknowledging that "people are stupid."

Another issue is exactly the attitudes expressed in this thread.
Ooooo boy, here we go again!
Seeing as how I'm in the only one who has given any pushback to your attempt at creating a narrative that "city people" get up in the morning and brush their teeth and get dressed and then go out to spend all day at the "let's hate country folk" meetings, when you say "the attitudes in this thread" you're pretty much just talking about me.
But, I'll make note that several pages in you and your defenders have yet to counter a single point that I've made, you're still just braying like mules over how butt hurt you are that I'm vaguely lurid in my prose.

People in rural areas are no different—not less intelligent or less caring or less creative or less patriotic than people in urban centers. They do have different points of view ( note: multiple points of view).
Simple question, should have a simple answer:
if they're not less intelligent, why do they keep doing a less-intelligent thing that causing most of their problems?

One issue is that big city folks are always calling them very ugly names ( see this thread).
You heard it here, folks!
I, personally, am GOD and my meanie-poopy-head owie time words have shattered the veil of physical reality and caused the decline in rural economics.

And yes it's only me, because I'm probably literally the only city person who has said anything about rural people (positive or negative, using polite language or foul) in about 15 years... because you keep trying to peddle this lie that "city people" have an opinion about rural people one way or another. Hint: they don't.

Another is that government ( state, federal) impose policies and make policies that are not in the best interests of rural people. Or are contrary to what people want. And when politics are played with farm programs, it creates a lot of uncertainty and instability for farmers—which ripples through the entire community.
Ssssooooo what you're saying is that rural people vote Republican and then Republicans spend 80 years systematically destroying their way of life, and then they keep voting Republican, and so in the end you completely agree with everything I've said?

Honestly Toni I know you don't get it, but YOU have been badly representing rural people in this thread and doing all the damage to their image - if there's a problem with anyone's attitude about rural folks going on here, it's yours.
You are talking about rural people as being completely identical, nay superior, to any other type of human and won't shut up about how proud and noble and aggrieved they are, which contrasts much more strongly with how utterly fucking stupid they are politically and culturally.
At least I have a notion as to A. why the current situation exists and B. how to deal with it, even if my language seems to make you want to lock yourself in a bathroom and cry.
All you're doing is presenting this vapid and empty soapbox about how the noble rural is so put-upon, and then detailing out precisely how every single problem they have is their own fault, while *still* blaming it on me because I don't lick their assholes delicately enough.

In my home state: An interstate was built through my county when I was a kid. In order to built it, they took big swaths of farmland through imminent domain. One of the farms they acquired parts of belonged to a family member. What you don't understand is your delightful little stories of woe are completely irrelevant, because nobody for a second has ever suggested that rural people aren't having problems that have been imposed on them by others - hell, that was the main point of my first post in this thread.

But this lovely little tale of yours doesn't explain why: A. the rural people voted for the Republicans who use imminent domain to take people's land all willy-nilly in the first place, and B. why they keep voting for Republicans when Republicans are the one causing all their sorrow, and C. why you keep blaming "city people" for the fact that they keep voting for Republicans who are causing all their problems.

So explain that one, Toni... it shouldn't be hard. You've spent 4 pages crying about how mean I am, and then spewing out what I'm sure you think are flowery speeches about the plight of the rural farmer, so you must have the solution here, right?

Republicans cause all their problems. They repeatedly vote Republican. Republicans continue to cause all their problems. They keep voting Republican. They're just as smart... nay, in fact, they're SMARTER! BETTER! STRONGER! FASTER! than city folk, and yet they keep on voting Republican because Facebook lied to them?
So what's the deal here Professor Toni - you claim to have all the answers, enlighten this besmirched bigot on the brilliant truths you're privy to.

So, you're moving the goalposts from "internet" to "good internet" - which is interesting, because I recall using a 36kbs modem in the mid 90s and somehow I didn't turn into a racist idiot who sought to ruin my own life.

Hmmm. Back then I lived in a cave and was streaming 2gb/s.
Seriously, today there is a disparity today that didn't exist then. There's a lot of content on teh interwebz that is inaccessible without a "good" internet connection. Way back when, it was just a few message boards. Anyone with a 14k modem was rockin' first class.

Ok, that seems... off, in the context of this discussion, but I'm willing to roll with it.

I agree that a lot of content is inaccessible in terms of streaming, but Facebook loads identically to Factcheck no matter what your connection speed.
If one can load Facebook and click on an article about Jew Lasers (or whatever), one can load google.com and type "so what's up with these jew lasers" and have that idiocy debunked right quick.

Facebook loads identically to Factcheck no matter what your connection speed.
By the time it loads for the hillbilly, the city dweller is on to two or three more things. Pages are now built for super-fast speeds.
Facebook has BIG problems with its intentional divisiveness, ensuring that no bumpkins get upsetting content alleging that Sleepy Joe actually beat The Best Brain In The Universe in a free and fair election.
But even access to unbiased news (which tends to not require such huge data speeds) is more problematic with crappy internet.

I dunno, I spent some time in a bumpkin town in the early 2000s with crap internet, and being the city boy that I am I still managed to seek out internetting where I could get it.
Hell, it was in my desperation for some kind of intellectual stimulation and a look at the news of the day that lead me to find this very forum waaaaaaaaaaay back in like 2003 or something when it was just the obligatory forum section of the Internet Infidels DataBase.

Point is, yes: I get that content streams flow in a certain direction, but it takes a very particular sort of person with a very particular sort of mindset to tap into that and decide to ride the current.

My mother moved to some bumwiddle nowhere northern PA town where's it's 45 minutes to the nearest country store and she has to get her internet with a satellite, and 4 years later she came to visit and literally started crying when I said I didn't vote for Trump because her little boy had fallen for the "mainstream media" and thought "that nigger in a suit" hadn't destroyed the country Mr. Orange was valiantly going to save.

You don't go that far into a spiral of lunacy that quickly without jumping into it with both feet. I don't care how biased the algorithm is, what I saw was a lifetime of small town midwest bigotry she'd been suppressing while she lived in a progressive college town come exploding out of her at the first opportunity.

Seems, from what I've seen, that bigots influence Facebook by being bigots and wanting bigotry.
Facebook does not create bigots out of doe-eyed innocents, because those disinclined to become bigots in the first place will simply disregard it when they see it.

I dunno, I spent some time in a bumpkin town in the early 2000s with crap internet, and being the city boy that I am I still managed to seek out internetting where I could get it.

...being a city boy, of course.
Not everyone in bumkin towns is a city boy. And they don't always have time to spend seeking out best versions of that "newfangled troublemakin' devilspawn crap what's ruining our kids".

Facebook does not create bigots out of doe-eyed innocents.

Facebook enables societal partitions. There were no platforms doing that back in the Day.
I'm sure rural people watched local and national ABC, CBS and NBC news back then too. Now those have been effectively vilified (along with CNN, MSNBC, NPR and anyone else ever considered credible) in favor of FOX, OAN, NewsMax, Breitbart etc. etc.
Sinclair Broadcasting and FOX pretty much own the South, on and offline.
Anyhow, we should not be fooled into thinking anything in that landscape is like it was.

But that's kind of my point: people blame 'the internet' when the problem is a cultural one. Those who internet 'wrong' aren't victims of the internet, they're victims of their own stupidity.

The internet is like the wheel, in terms of significance to the human species as an invention.
But the problem is that way we treat the internet is kind of like if, as a species, we invented the wheel and then the *only* thing we ever did with it is see how far we could shove it up our asses.

Facebook does not create bigots out of doe-eyed innocents.

Facebook enables societal partitions. Politicians and free market advertisers do the rest.
I just can't agree there.
Humans want societal partitions and an excuse to be angry at, or hate, or feel superior to, other people without having to come up with a rationally justifiable reason for it.
Politicians and free market advertisers just give the people what they want, and only those who want it fall for it.

Nobody who doesn't want to become a bigot becomes a bigot when exposed to Facebook, it only works on those with a pre-disposition towards it in my experience.

they're victims of their own stupidity.
Their stupidity is a product of their environment, and maybe some, uh, inbreeding in some areas.
It's like religion; if you grow up indoctrinated to it, good luck getting out. I agree with Toni that in general, bumkins, hillbillies or whatever, are no less intelligent that City Slickers. (Of course if you remove Donald Trump from the City Slicker category, it gets a lot smarter).
