Dem Post Mortem

Maybe they like living in poverty while trying to pay their student loans.
Why not use their degree to make more money?

The whole "student loan forgiveness" is yet another stupid idea that originated with the activist classes that was adopted by Old Man Biden.
A minority of people have student loans - most people don't have a college degree, and many who do paid their loans off or never took any.

The sound and fury over this issue from the activists (many of whom just wanted to get their expensive art history degree at Vassar or Amherst comped) was much greater than the concern in the population/electorate at large.

Moreover, college graduates tend to earn more than the average American and are less likely to be unemployed.

So why should this already better off demographic get special loan forgiveness from the government?

Heh. I had to look that up. Apparently, it is a racist term. I had always understood "maroon"to be a comedic variant of "moron" made famous in a Bugs Bunny cartoon, I think. Looking back, I wonder if I ever jokingly called a black friend a "maroon".

I was really just parodying the leftist penchant to say that "everything is racist, everything is sexist, and you have to point all of it out".
I am pretty sure Elixir also had Bugs Bunny in mind. And maroni is just chestnuts. Like you might buy roasted this time of year.

Mahlzeit!

There are clearly people who just love to be critical of liberals and then there are other people, moderates--who like to promote their own points of view on things. All these people have a vested interest in supporting the idea that Trump won on ideas and they may take their favorite hobby horses to new heights on the Trump electoral win. BUT, again, the truth is that Trump mostly won because of the economy and Harris being tied to the incumbent administration. Incumbents losing isn't just an American thing right now--it's been happening internationally--and when the exit polls were examined, the economy was pretty much the number 1 or number 2 issue for people. The Republicans didn't even really dominate registering and voting since many independents and even some Democrats thought about voting with their purses or just stayed home. So that's what happened but you will hear tons of irrelevant noise.

Are there maroon people being insulted? If not, I don't understand the gif.
The only Maroons I know of are the Queensland State of Origin team.

You can insult them if you like, but as they are all big blokes who have trained for years to do this:

... I seriously don't recommend it.

what body of adequate authority ever determined that it was an insurrection??
THERE IS NO "ADEQUATE AUTHORITY".
The State Supreme Court was the ONLY authority to adjudicate that point, and they found that it was an insurrection and that Trump was complicit.
As we saw, that lead to tit for tat.

Led to SCOTUS skirting the issue, failing to address the question, by restricting their ruling to Trump’s eligibility to run for office. AFAIK, his eligibility to actually serve was never litigated and should probably be revoked. His coming term will be illicit, illegitimate or whatever. I expect to outlive that grease eating ball of fetid smelling fat so I’m hoping the betting houses will have a yes/no bet:

“Will Cheato Croak While In Office?”

It would probably have to carry a disclaimer about assassination though - no payout unless it looks like an accident or natural causes.

I see two balls in the video still, one for each team, and it doesn't look like a split screen.

Have Australian Rules reached rugby?
State of Origin is Rugby League, and has nothing to do with Australian Rules Football, which is a totally different game.

Only one ball is in play at a time.

Also, the Maroons player on the left of the video preview still (Billy Slater) is wearing a totally different shirt from that of the Maroon on the right (Gorden Tallis).

Tallis is wearing a shirt from a much earlier year than Slater's; Tallis played 20 Origin matches for the Maroons between 1994 and 2003; Slater played 31 Origin matches between 2004 and 2018 (and is now the Maroons head coach).

The shirt design for the New South Wales Blues has changed less noticably, but the sponsor's logos are very different between the left and right hand sides of the photomontage used in the still.

As Tallis retired from Origin the year before Slater's Origin debut, the two men never played in the same Origin match.

Their club careers did overlap, but they played for different teams - in 2003 and '04, Tallis met Slater on-field four times, with Tallis wearing a Brisbane Broncos jersey and the captains armband, and Slater wearing the Melbourne Storm kit as their new fullback.

This is, of course, entirely on-topic and relevant information in a thread about the Dem's post-mortem after their 2024 US Presidential election defeat. :p

It's as relevant as most such speculation and advice I've seen.

When you've got an electorate that will believe a candidate when he says the price of eggs is $4 when he's standing in front of a store display clearly showing the price is $2.99 about the only way you're going to capture their votes is to find some better lies to tell them...

There is never enough money in people's pockets.

That's vaguely. What's precisely, and how is it connected to the neoliberal economic policies the Democratic Party has been pushing ever since they reinvented themselves as the sometime American Left, and the shitty gaslighting they engage in whenever questioned on the matter?

The big problem with the economy is that the vast majority of people, including the voters and the politicians, are absolutely certain that they understand it, and simultaneously are absolutely wrong.

The macroeconomic experts have been playing a careful game of trying to do the things that are good, but widely believed to be bad; While telling the politicians things that they can pass on to their voters, which give the (false) impression that they are trying to do the things widely believed to be good, but which would actually be disastrous.

The voters and the politicians want: a balanced federal budget, a return to the gold standard, ultra low income taxes, high tariffs on imported goods, deflation, and low interest rates.

Economists recognise that sustainable long term growth and prosperity in the US (as she continues to become an advanced service driven economy) requires: a budget deficit and ever growing "national debt", fiat money, moderate and highly progressive income taxes, the lowest possible import barriers (including zero tariffs), constant low inflation (just enough to ensure that deflation is not a risk), and interest rates set at a level appropriate to keep inflation in that target range.

This is a microcosm of the wider problem with America (and the rest of the OECD) - The public have a vote, but are committed simpletons. They want to overrule the experts, and they want to understand the subjects on which they are expressing opinions, but they do NOT want to learn anything about those subjects.

Instead they demand that the subjects be made sufficiently simple as to be comprehended by uneducated non-experts such as themselves.

This is, of course, impossible. But they don't understand that (and don't want to
learn), so they are total suckers for any politician who tells them that reality really is as simple as they demand it should be.

The Democrats come across as shifty on the economy, because they are. They want to give the impression of being in control, and of doing what the voters demand; But they also understand that they need to follow the opposing advice of the actual experts, and enact the policy that those experts recommend, if they are to avoid disaster. So they promise one thing, and do another. Honesty is a vote-losing strategy for them.

That's why Trump won. He's a simpleton, but more importantly, he can sell the idea that all this complexity is just "them" trying to confuse "us", and that reality is actually simple enough to understand without effort.

This doesn't only apply to the economy. Every part of his platform takes a complex problem and applies a simple (but disastrous) solution.

Immigration? Send them all home.
Defense? Secure Americas borders.
Foreign Policy? Isolationism.
Healthcare? Homeopathy is cheap, so use that.
Education? A scam by the elites to keep the ordinary simpleton down.

Politics? All that bickering and interminable debate? Replace it with absolute loyalty to the President.

The world is simple. If it's not, we will pretend it is anyway. If you don't like that, you are a dangerous intellectual and need to be imprisoned for your treasonous attachment to 'expertise' and 'knowledge'.

No wonder the Evangelical Christians love him so much.

The confederacy of dunces that is America apparently thinks the president controls the price of eggs. He doesn’t. The last time a president tried to control the price of eggs was in 1972, when Richard Nixon imposed wage/price controls. It eludes me how he was even able to constitutionally do that. He did it because inflation was rising owing to the fact that LBJ neglected to raise taxes to pay for both his Great Society and his idiotic Vietnam War.

So NIxon, against all his pretend principles (he never had any actual principles except what was good for Dick Nixon), imposed the controls because he feared inflation would imperil his re-election prospects.

After he was re-elected, he removed the controls, and presto, prices skyrocketed, as any half-bright economist would have predicted. In fact those controls and their removal, in conjunction with the OPEC oil embargo and energy crisis, ushered in a decade of stagflation — rising prices and low growth, normally not seen together. It cost two future presidents, Ford and Carter, their jobs, and I sometimes think it cost Nixon his job, too. People may have been more irate at him over inflation than Watergate, because, you know, our confederacy of dunces doesn’t even give a shit about their own constitution but they have an all consuming interest in the price of eggs and, I don’t know, Eggos and porn video.
