Re: Kim Potter - What happens when good people no longer go into law enforcement?

Putting aside the OP commentary.

The worse case short answer is Capone era Chicago. Here in Seattle drug related shootings between rivals are common. Someone was shot during a drug deal a block from where I live.

Seattle police report that with relaxed law enforcement and prosecution policies criminals are comming here to exploit it.

Local reporting says that homeless camps are being used as fronts for urganized crime.

Recently there was a car jacking by 3 teens who drove around shooting at random.

Were @steve_bank a trans person, or a black person, or a female person, would describing his personal history as "bullshit" still be acceptable on IIDB?

I don't think it would. But he's a cis-het white male. So it is.

Stay in your place Steve! Don't get uppity!
Tom
Nothing in Steve's post is 'personal history'. It's a mish-mash of vaguely sourced hearsay.

The closest it gets to being 'personal history' is the unsupported claim of an event "a block from where I live", which might vaguely imply that it's an eyewitness account, but which context suggests is not in fact anything more than hearsay. It's noticeable that Steve makes no claim to have seen or heard anything first-hand in any part of his post; And that he provides no sources other than the vague 'Seattle police', with no link to the particular police statements, nor any indication that police statements are being quoted or even accurately summarised.

We are right not to take his word about what Seattle police did or did not report. Or about what "Local reporting" might or might not say.

Unsourced assertions about the claims of third parties that vaguely support a political stance are the very essence of bullshit, and can and should be called out as such whoever makes them.

And your insinuation that calling this bullshit out would be unacceptable on this board if it came from "a trans person, or a black person, or a female person" is bullshit too - it's unsubstantiated, defamatory, and factually wrong.
Not to mention there is nothing in his story that doesn't happen regularly in every medium to large city across the entire country.

Just last week my wife heard someone walked into a house a block away and held up the occupant at gunpoint and robbed him. A couple months ago a guy another block away woke up to find a dead body in his driveway.

I've told the story a couple years ago about the 17 yr old gang banger that lived next door to us. He'd have parties in the front yard 'til all hours of the night. Someone stood in my front yard and emptied their 9mm into the crowd. Luckily only one person was hit. A few weeks later a drive by occurred again towards the same house.

Steve's story is nothing special... at all.

Man, a year or so ago, there was a carjacking a couple blocks south of me. I heard the automatic gunfire from our house, and then the carjackers, in the carjacked car, struck my husband's favorite tree. 4 people were injured; dunno if anyone died.

Then there was a driveby shooting at a neighbor's house across the street, and the another neighbor on the block who has kids.

The thing the victims have in common is that they are excessively obnoxious as neighbors; one has threatened me on the street on front of his kid for merely being disappointed visibly in his illegal parking in the bus stop, and the other is host to a tree removal service company/family that occupies a third of the street side parking on the block.

Neither is good or acceptable; there are children in one of those homes!

At one point I also found a bag that had clearly been used to ship a large quantity of weed in it. At least a kilo weight from the creases and the size.

My suspicion is that the drug war is propping up neighborhood distribution networks; an affordable dispensary on the block would make all this bullshit go away.

Maybe then, we could turn the taxes towards better educational funding in the neighborhood.

Try calling the personal experiences of @Gospel, @SigmatheZeta , or @Toni bullshit and see how far that gets you.

Tom

I understand and agree with bilby's reason for calling unsubstantiated claims bullshit. I recognize that I have shared personal experiences on this forum with no evidence however I do not expect anyone to believe me. However, on the other note, I have nothing else to say but I don't care to someone that doesn't believe me because their belief doesn't change my experiences nor do I expect anyone to change their views based on what I shared. I share them because I'm crazy enough to think members of this board are worth sharing them with.

I can't help but notice OP hasn't been back to the forums since they posted the thread... And this is the only thing they posted here.

I have no proof but it's possible the OP was one of those good cops that now has to focus on finding a new job after this post was discovered on a department monitored computer. :sneaky:

Have you not noticed how much transphobic hate there is ON THIS BOARD, WHICH REPRESENTS THE TRADITONALLY LIBERAL/LIBERTARIAN SECULAR COMMUNITY?

No.
Quite the contrary.

I'm confident that no poster has ever dismissed your personal experience with "bullshit".

I could be wrong, I don't read every post on the forum. Maybe someone did. But I doubt it, because I know the forum's culture pretty well.

The Seattle police have self-interested reasons to report that people are moving to the Seattle area to commit crimes.

The anecdotal report of a crime in a neighborhood is not evidence of more crime being committed because there are either fewer police or less enforcement.

As someone else pointed out, no one dismissed a personal experience. So why you keep repeating that canard is a bit disappointing.

And there is no evidence that you know this forum's culture well, let alone, pretty well.

And, of course, the obvious racist content of the OP seems to have flown past a number of participants in this thread.

You're still clinging to your erroneous idea that the post in question contains 'personal experiences'.

Calling out personal experiences of ANY member here as 'bullshit' is a ToU violation and would incur an infraction regardless of sexuality, colour or gender.

I am acting with impunity NOT because Steve is cis, white and male, but because he hasn't presented anything other than hearsay, and there's no rule against calling hearsay out for the bullshit that it is.

You appear to be desperate to find bigotry and oppression where none exists; You should probably stop doing that before people start thinking you a fool.

Well, where I live 2, nearby Jr. High school boys were kidnapped, raped, and one killed before the perp was caught. And the gang/drug violence is rampant; and woman look under their cars to look for bad guys and rapists....Oh wait, that was soooooo 1970's when I was a kid myself (with per capita murder rates far far higher than today)...never mind.

It's almost like shit has always been bad, cops have always been shitty, crime has always been rampant, and that the only thing that has really changed is the advent of our ability to be aware of it through social media.

He's describing the situation where he lives. It's not like he's describing the situation in Minneapolis or somewhere.

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of his observations, I've never even been to Seattle. But there's nothing implausible about them either.

I can't help but think that the main reason his observations are being dismissed is due to the fact that they don't match the "The police are the problem" narrative.

May I use this quote as a response to post #26?

I was on a local FB group and people were complaining about rampant crime. I found an article from the local paper that showed crime being down 85% since the seventies.

It has not occurred to you that it may be that his observations are immaterial to the OP may be a factor?

Is this personal experience, or is it just some more bullshit? Second hand hearsay, or can you deliver evidence from a source accepted by me?
