$1000 fine to sleep on the streets of Las Vegas

Just goes to show these people don't try one bit.

Tell me that you don't actually, seriously, think of yourself as a Christian.

God helps those who help themselves. If you refuse to do anything, sit around drinking booze all day, youre not trying. Libraries are free. You can go in and use the free computer to apply for jobs.

And why are they defecating on the streets? McDonald's or any fast food restaurant in the area lets you use the bathroom for free. These people are so lazy (or mentally ill) they can't even be bothered to walk inside a fast food place to use the bathroom. You know how many times I had to go to the bathroom really bad on my drive home and I stop off at a fast food place off the highway and go to the bathroom??? No one ever says one word to me. I don't just pull my car off the road and defecate out my door onto the road.

An increasing number of places only let customers use the bathroom. They have too much trouble with druggies shooting up and in general people making messes.

Yes, that means the old retired people will have to move out to other cheaper areas of the country. But they do not work anyway and do not need to live close to jobs.

Life is not just about where you work, but life with sense of community and belonging. 'Old retired people' may have lived in their neighborhood all their lives, so uprooting and moving to an area where they don't know anyone, or where the amenities may not be suitable would be a harsh consequence of that policy.

So much for Christian compassion then. Quite apart rom the fact that you are using pejorative stereotypes.

Let them eat cake.

Why do some of you use terms like "nutters" and "druggies" to describe human beings who have serious health issues? Addiction is a disease and mental illnesses are often very serious brain disorders. Do you use derogatory terms to describe people who suffer from hypertension, MS, heart disease, diabetes, or seizure disorders too? Seriously, the level of hatred and ignorance from some posters is disturbing.

In my former profession, we are taught. prior to our clinical training, never to judge those who we provide care. That was always something that I valued about the work that I did. Decent people try to put themselves in the other person's place and try to understand the influences in the lives of those who suffer, while understanding that they too would be in the same circumstances if they had been exposed to the same genetic and environmental influences. The homeless aren't criminals. They are desperate people who need help.

And to our Christian member who has said many harsh, judgmental things. I will remind you that your holy book says not to judge others, or you will be judged.

Oh spare us the sanctimonious claptrap. What people call the homeless should be the least of your worries. But no, that’s what the virtue signaling progressives are so angst about. Meanwhile here in Los Angeles and other major cities in CA we have a chronic problem with “homeless” people setting up camps on the sidewalk, taking drugs, pissing and shitting where they stand. And this additiction “disease” you talk of, people make choices and there are consequences to these choices. For some, the whole homeless gig is a lifestyle choice.

I dont dissagree with what you say but it still is not fair. Everyone should pay their fair taxes or the new person to the neighborhood has to make up the difference. That causes everyone elses tax assessments to be higher to make up for the dead load...causing higher rents...and leading property values higher. Rinse and repeat.

Proposition 13 is like most other liberal laws. They sound good on paper but end up causing a lot of other harm.

We have no other terms.

"Mentally ill" covers a lot more than the nutters on the street.

"Addicts" include smokers, an addiction which doesn't drive one to the street.

Furthermore, this is a case where political correctness will not help. The concepts exist and are negative, killing off the derogatory word will just cause another word to take the same meaning. All you'll actually do is corrupt the language.

1. Get rid of proposition 13 - Make everyone pay property taxes equally and fairly based on assessed value. Absolutely no exceptions. Yes, that means the old retired people will have to move out to other cheaper areas of the country. But they do not work anyway and do not need to live close to jobs. No one gets a tax break based just on seniority.
Are property rights a joke to you? How the heck is it remotely "fair" to seize somebody's house and kick her out onto the street when your only justification is that somebody else wants to live in it? That is exactly what you are advocating -- that is the precise meaning of the phrase "based on assessed value". What "assessors" attempt to "assess" is how much some third party would be willing to pay for a house. So if somebody buys a house she can afford the property tax on, but then the property tax shoots through the roof because some rich guys from out of town move in and bid up local prices, so she can't afford the tax any more and will have to move out, that means what happened is the government is handing out poor people's houses to rich people. This, you call "pay taxes fairly"?

If you object that getting a tax break based just on seniority is unfair too -- and it is -- there's a trivial and obvious solution to the dilemma: fund government with income taxes, not property taxes. This isn't rocket science.

My father was at times a homeless vietnam war veteran who some people might call mentally ill while others might not. His foray into homelessness so far as I know was very infrequent, usually having stable housing, i.e. a trailer. After his brother (and roommate) got cancer is when he started to lose some stability. After some time, now, he's back on track in better housing. The way you refer to my father, a veteran, after tricking him into supporting war because of his patriotism and then treating him like shit because of his problems and lastly calling him a nutter is unconscionable.

Not all mental illness is what people normally describe as "nutter". Nutters are those sufficiently messed up they can't function reasonably in society. Things like the people who reject shelters for having rules like you need to take a shower every day.

Dictionaries don't agree.

I suggested they go to a library to apply for jobs. You think that's something they can't do? If so, then there's no helping them. They are too mentally ill to do anything.

The only other option is that the homeless are "too busy" to walk into a library.

People tend not to hire homeless people for many reasons. If you didn't offer them a job yourself, then you can't judge.

Job application forms usually ask for things like home address and contact details.

This is what we have to put up with in Los Angeles;

A night near the Hollywood Walk of Fame would change a woman's life, as she was getting into her car and a homeless man sprinted across Hollywood Boulevard toward her. Heidi Van Tassel was parked in Hollywood after having a pleasant evening out with friends at an authentic Thai restaurant. Suddenly a man randomly pulled her out of the car, dragged her out to the middle of the street, and dumped a bucket of feces on her head, Van Tassel said and public records confirm.

And when the company wants to contact them for an interview, they should contact them how?
