Officer Peter Liang and his partner, also new to the force, were patrolling a pitch-dark stairwell with flashlights late Thursday, police said. Gurley, 28, was leaving his girlfriend's apartment after she had braided his hair, according to the girlfriend, who is not his daughter's mother.

Police said the officers walked down the stairs onto an eighth-floor landing when Gurley and his girlfriend opened a stairwell door one floor down, after giving up on waiting for an elevator. Police said Liang, patrolling with his gun drawn, fired without a word and apparently by accident, hitting Gurley from a distance of about 10 feet.

Gurley was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The death of the unarmed man shot by a probationary NYPD officer in a Brooklyn stairwell last week has been ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said Monday.

The killing of an unarmed man by a police officer was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. Let's see if this prosecutor is able to get an indictment or if he instead attempts to try the case before the grand jury like that doofus from Missouri.

Ya, that sounds like a clear-cut case of murder. Why did he have his gun out in the first place? I get that dark stairwells are scary and everything but if you're worried about horror movie monsters jumping out at you and shit, start by whacking them with a baton, FFS.

Part of a squad who is to help reduce violence? Blacks just need to know that there is a higher risk of being shot if you are black and in the dark. They should all have helmets with lights on the top to prevent these sorts of incidents.

What were two "probationary" officers doing together instead of being split and under supervision of more experienced officers?
Looks like a disaster wanting to happen, especially in a gun-happy country.

dx713, Haven't you ever seen Police Academy? Because that is totally how they do it.

So instead of the expected Darwinian outcome of shooting himself or his partner, he manages to take out a target on another floor. In the dark. By accident.

Happens all the time. In video games.

To be fair, dark skinned people are harder to see in the dark. And also scarier.
Black folk seem to attract bullets like rats get cancer. Probably why they don't go hunting often. It is just asking for trouble!

Yes, Officer Liang accidently shot Gurley center mass.

No I didn't.
You mean it's normal practice across the US?

ETA: although it could be normal practice around here too, I don't know much about police training. Still doesn't seem a good idea to me.

True. But here we are taking in 25 percent of world resources, swashbuckling, imprisoning, continuing racism, while admitting at highest rates of immigration in the world. Odd.

Do you have actual info as to which body part he was shot in or are you just guessing? Could make a big difference as to what charges are warranted.

Why was the completely irrelevant fact I have bolded included in this news report?

Is the reporter suggesting that the victim was shot, or deserved to be shot, for having a girlfriend who is a different individual than the mother of his child? WTF is this information doing here? Why didn't they tell us his girlfriend's shoe size? - it is at least as important to the case. :confused2:

I pondered the exact same question. It was wholly irrelevant to the story. Especially when this is the first time the daughter is mentioned... who also has nothing to do with the story.

Who mentioned the race of the officer?

Well, I said it sounds like he may be a White Asian.

Hey, there you go:

A day after the rookie cop gunned down an unarmed man inside the Pink Houses, “Wanted” posters appeared in the Brooklyn housing project.

...

The poster shows an image of an Asian officer — but it’s not Liang.

Definitely in bad taste, and only helps to incite trouble. Granted, not many white people being shot completely by accident by the Police. So there is that context to consider.
