Anyone use Viber?

I've got a friend of the family that wants me to install Viber so we can make free calls. A little poking around on Goolge and people are saying the permissions and what it can share are quite bad. A few people in the App Store said they started getting unwanted text messages. Have you tried it? If not is there a better alternative for free voice calls?

I tried it. It was a bitch to actually connect with people. Line worked a lot better.
