The animal has 20 years of living in captivity at the zoo in Buenos Aires

A female orangutan named Sandra who lives 20 years ago at the zoo in Buenos Aires was benefited by a court ruling that recognized rights as " human subject ", said the sponsoring attorney on Sunday.

Sandra, 29, could be transferred soon to an "animal sanctuary where they can live in a semi-wild" said to Channel TN, the constitutional expert Andrés Gil Dominguez.

Justice gave favorable to habeas corpus driven by the Association of Professional Lawyers for Animal Rights, on grounds that the orangutan "is suffering an unwarranted confinement", the lawyer said.

This is a nice follow-up case to the old thread NY court to decide if chimps qualify for legal personhood.

We've been finding out that the distinction between self aware animals (e.g. humans) and non-self aware animals is a pretty fuzzy boundary. It looks like the law is starting to reflect that, which is probably a good thing.

Well, it's lucky I didn't invite any Argentinians to me Xmas party, because it would have been awkward when the chimpanzee pate came out.
