This is big news. Miss Michigan has been stripped of her title as Miss Michigan after she made a couple statements that suffer from Social Media brevity. I mean, she is being persecuted for her beliefs.

There is a 'try a hijab on' booth at my college campus.

So you're telling me that it's now just a fashion accessory and not a religious thing? Or are you just trying to get women used to being oppressed under Islam?
Technically, I don't find a Hijab as oppression. A Burqa certainly is.

Regardless.

I said that it was (getting women used to) being oppressed because there are so many women in Middle Eastern countries that are being punished and stoned for refusing to wear a hijab. Nobody is talking about that in the West because all they see is everyone being at peace, but that is the beauty of America.
Technically, I wouldn't say this helps her case.

Then there is this.

Did you know the majority of black deaths are caused by other blacks? Fix problems within your own community before blaming others.

This applies for every community. If there is a problem, fix things in your own community before lashing out at others and trying to find an issue there. That is all I wanted to say. It is not a problem against black people. Obviously I am not racist or stuff like that.

Poor Miss Michigan. A victim of the brevity of Social Media communication and her inability to put her ideas into well thought out statements. Only if she started out with saying "I am not racist or stuff like that" first, then we would have realized that her poorly worded comments which broadbrush and strawman people she doesn't like, was completely innocent.

If she plays this right it'll be the best thing that ever happened to her.

Yeah, attractive and willing to shill. That is big buck bonanza in the right-wing propaganda mill.

What's weird about this story is that the title will now go to the runner up and that means there were actually two people in Michigan who entered a beauty pageant. That seems like an excessive number of contestants to have in this day and age.

How does that work exactly? I mean, the mechanics of it. The title is taken away by proclamation? Kind of like how a judge can adjourn a courtroom and having the recogognized power to do so makes it so when spoken?

I’ve heard that a university can refuse to recognize a graduate as being as such. Does the same ethical underpinnings apply? If you work towards something and accomplish a goal and are rewarded with what was earned, is there some fine print somewhere that makes this coshure?

Also, how far can one morally go to protect their establishment...to the point of unconscionably requiring others to agree to every whim or go away? How much moral righteousness can be reasonably asked of a BEAUTY contestant?

It’s all very nice sounding to speak of having inner beauty as well as outward looks, but the sheer fact the law allows no limits for holding everyone to moral standards is an infringement on the legal right to be naughty in certain ways or say certain naughty things.

SAYING “it reflects upon an establishment” I feel sometimes needs to be taken with a grain of salt. How does such an organization become substandard by not having rules that allow such things?

Something ain’t right somewhere. Something is contrived in the mix. It would be like a grocery store withholding discounts (like those ‘savings’ from bonus card carrying shoppers) from convicted criminals on the basis they don’t want to endorse felony behavior. IF it were somehow beneficial (financially and publicly accepted), they could incorporate the bullshit to set them apart from other less caring grociers. But, as you see, it would all be a facad.

I think generally these pageants are private organizations that act by whatever bylaws they've set up.

If it actually were a state of Michigan thing they could not engage in this sort of viewpoint discrimination.

Oh. Shows ya what I know ... and how easy it is (in the face of ignorance) to go off the speculative deep end, lol

Well I couldn't seem to get quotes in a quote to work, so...

Wow, she anti free speech, anti religious, and anti fashion! Not good qualities for Miss World America Michigan. Then singling out a specific minority community for something that applies to every community! Beauty Queens are only supposed to say nice things. As far as "what I meant", complete bullshit. If she won a title, she would have known better that not to say what she meant in the first place.

This is pretty ridiculous and just shows how far political correctness has taken us already.
What's wrong with anything she said? And what's the deal with "try a hijab" booths? This infatuation with Islam the Left has developed is really crazy!

This whole thing is like those Philadelphia cops who lost their jobs because they shared some non-PC (but hilarious) memes like these:

I think beauty pageants overcompensate for the fact they are easily accused of objectifying women.

And they can't really lean into the objectification of women(/unapologetic celebration of female hotness) because they can't compete on that ground with internet porn.

That I don't get. If you want to see what these women think about issues, you should not penalize them from having an opinion different from your own.
So only women who believe "try on a hijab" booths are great should be Michigan beauty queens? Or only women who do not recognize that black-on-black violence is a big problem?

Bad news for Nate Silver: he can't be a Michigan beauty queen. I am sure he is heartbroken over it.

I'm gonna take a wild guess here and say that the "Miss World America" pageant has a social media policy that every contestant is required to read and sign. If it's like the typical social media policy, it applies to both your company or official accounts as well as your personal accounts, and anything you post that reflects poorly upon the organization or is contrary to their stated "values" is grounds for disciplinary action.

So this woman can take her martyr complex and shove it. She knew what she was doing.

contrary to their stated "values"
Ignoring reality on murder rates is a "stated value" of the Miss World America Pageant?
Being in favor of "try a hijab" booths is a "stated value" of the Miss World America Pageant? Seems to me it would be counterproductive for a beauty pageant, but then again, they already banned bikinis so they are moving in that direction ...

Ms Zhu really stepped in it. She was supposed to represent the state of Michigan which has a large population of people of middle eastern descent and a large population of blacks. Saying that "There is a 'try a hijab on' booth at my college campus.

So you're telling me that it's now just a fashion accessory and not a religious thing? Or are you just trying to get women used to being oppressed under Islam?" is pretty tone deaf and ignorant. I suspect that is not what caused her to lose her title. Add in the blatantly bigoted social commentary "Did you know the majority of black deaths are caused by other blacks? Fix problems within your own community before blaming others." and she deservedly got the sack. These were unprompted and unsolicited social commentary. And frankly, I think she is not terribly bright, because why in the world would anyone blurt this stuff out in tweets? Did she think she was auditioning for the Trump administration?

I have rarely heard of a thing as idiotic as a "try on a hijab" booth. And pointing out the stupidity of the booth, and the oppressive nature of Islamic head coverings, is not ignorant.

Nothing bigoted there. Just reality. There is a lot of pathology in the black community, including high levels of violence, but you see a lot more attention being paid to the relatively few cases when a black person is killed by a white person or a cop. Most police killings are justified and as far as white-on-black homicides, they are only half as common as black-on-white homicides according to FBI data. So why do we keep hearing about the former so much more than about the latter?

I suspect she is a lot smarter than you, but that's not saying that much.

Again, it is tone deaf and insulting to a significant portion of the Michigan's population - the state Ms Zhu was representing.

Nothing bigoted there. Just reality....
Ms Zhu was conflating two completely different issues - black on black murder and state sanctioned killings of blacks by the police. Telling the black community that they should STFU about police killings until their murder rate is the same as the white one is moronic and bigoted.

Yeah, it's pretty stupid and racist.
