What do you think of Ben Carson? I saw him at the first republican debate and he came across as the only guy there with a brain and I thought he may be the best bet they have to field against Hillary (or whoever the dem candidate is). Now he is jumping up on the BLM issue, basically taking an opposite stance, and putting it across surprisingly well.

What do you make of this guy?

Make of him?

Who gives a shit about him?

The way democracy is supposed to work is the people are supposed to decide what they want and their servants, government officials, are supposed to try their best to manage competing desires.

The way despotic regimes work is the leaders tell you what they are going to do.

Democracy is supposed to be bottom up.

But the American system is top-down.

It is closer to monarchy than democracy.

He's just saying what Republicans always say. That problem with poor people is that they're incompetent at running their own lives, therefore we need less government support for them. It doesn't really make sense.

There were a few odd snippets. The lead-in: Don't blame the police, blame growing up with guns and drugs, and living in fear of crime. Um.. Aren't those something to do with the policing? To be fair that was the anchor, not the candidate, but even so...

It really just looks like an attempt to distract attention. It's not aimed at black voters, it's aimed at wavering republicans who want to feel good about themselves while rejecting a populist movement to reduce the murder rate in law enforcement. Because if Dr Carson can't demonstrate an ability bring them on side, he won't get the support of his own party.

The Fox news thing is weird though. Is that really what passes for news in the US? Some anchor listing the conclusions you should reach and the ways you should react emotionally before briefly wheeling on a heavily edited guest as primary source to say things you can pretend are similar? I don't think that Dr Carson will do well if not even the republican media want to hear him speak.

“You know Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery. And it is in a way, it is slavery in a way, because it is making all of us subservient to the government, and it was never about health care. It was about control.” – 2013 at the Values Voter Summit

“There comes a time when people with values simply have to stand up. Think about Nazi Germany. Most of those people did not believe in what Hitler was doing. But did they speak up? Did they stand up for what they believe in? They did not, and you saw what happened.” - Carson comparing Democrats and those who voted for President Obama to Nazis.

“Because 9/11 is an isolated incident. Things that are isolated issues as opposed to things that fundamentally change the United Sates of America and shift power from the people to the government. That is a huge shift. You have to take a long-term look at something that fundamentally changes the power structure of America.”

5. “A lot of people who go into prison straight, and when they come out they’re gay.” – CNN interview on March 4, 2015

Carson also said earlier this year that the U.S. should not hesitate to send troops to defeat the Islamic State and should not fear prosecution for its actions. In the Fox News interview, he said he would “not hesitate to put boots on the ground” and suggested that the military should not be subject to any war crimes law.
“If you’re gonna have rules for war, you should just have a rule that says no war,” he said. “Other than that, we have to win.”

After speaking out about welfare, Carson said in an interview months later that Obama’s executive action on immigration was part of a “nefarious agenda” to bring new voters into the United States who will be dependent on government.
“Is he just trying to instead of get out the vote, bring in the vote?” former Republican Congressman J.D. Hayworth asked Carson.“Is this all designed to have new voters — despite the fact he claims they’re not going to get citizenship — is the long-term goal to bring in a new class of voters dependent on government?”
“Of course it is,” Carson replied. He added that Republicans should respond to Obama’s action by shutting down the government, but only the parts that are “important to the president” and not any parts that will “hurt the American people.”

He's just another far right nutbag.

The tragedy of Ben Carson: How a brilliant doctor turned into a right-wing provocateur.

I know dismal will disagree, but the above stuff is nuts, and the reason he isn't a serious candidate. He proves that intelligence in one area doesn't mean having wisdom or being knowledgeable about other things.

Dr. Ben Carson is a man of many conflicting platitudes. His advice to fight racist cops and poverty....ask mommy for a library card. I see him in the same light as Dan Quayle.

Naw he knows that how to spell potatoes, is get rid of the 's', for the singular, potatoe, er, potato. Oh hell I dunno. Does that mean Carson's wife is a shrew?

His wacky religious views are a complete turn off. We are talking Sarah Palin type nuttery.

About 60% of 'mericans have wacky religious ideas. Palin is the typical tool. Gullible, willing to act on misinformation, beauty school graduate from some place in Idaho - I know Idaho man - and she can see the Soviet Union from where she lives. Gotta have a more robust critique than that if you want to grow weeds in Carson's garden.

Carson's a great example of how a very intelligent person can still hold very stupid beliefs.

To be a "patriot" is to hold stupid beliefs.

The religion of "the state" is the most dangerous religion.

He comes off as a token black man, saying things that Republicans believe but are afraid to say because it would come off as whitesplaining, so they have a black man say it. But, a puppet black man can not energize the base so well, because it would just feel awkward.

White Republicans: "This guy will help you. You are welcome"
Blacks: "WE ****ING HATE HIM!"

It has been tried many times before. Doesn't work. Donald Trump is tapping into the conservative base's racial/nationalistic feelings in a way that doesn't come off as a lie. The majority of them really don't care about blacks. They think blacks are an unimportant minority that can deal with their own damn problems. They care about whites.

That is why Ben Carson will fail politically. In principle, he is also wrong. His basic argument is, "My mother kept me out of crime and had me go to the library, and then I became a neurosurgeon. All you other blacks can likewise succeed, so long as you start behaving better." It is the traditional conservative line of thought. With the common delusional blank-slate thinking, you must choose people to blame when one race falls behind, so the problem can be fixed. Liberals blame whites, and conservatives like Ben Carson blame blacks. In reality, the problem will not be fixed by changing behaviors, because the problem is genetic. Before, that meant the problem of racial inequality is unfixable. Now, in the age of genetic engineering, it is finally fixable. But not politically fixable, so long as the delusions remain widely popular among all parties.

Genetic engineering? Are you talking about encouraging mixed race couples, or something more radical?

Selective breeding for hybrid vigor would be the old way. I think it would be too difficult to persuade people to interracially marry to eliminate races. What I have in mind is keeping the races but subsidize genetic engineering of the children of willing parents of the races of lower intelligence so that they have high intelligence. The minority of those who are genetically engineered will breed within their own races, and the genes for high intelligence will trickle into the entire population. Otherwise, the natural outcome will be that the races of high wealth and high intelligence (Ashkenazi Jews, Asians and whites) will genetically engineer their own children, and the intelligence gaps will increase even further.
