Bill Maher On Police Brutality

I watched this a few days ago. I think the police have a systemic problem involving an "us and them" attitude, bigotry, violence, and lack of training. I believe it's a widespread problem. Yes, there are good cops but based on the sheer amounts of problems that have been surfacing across the country, and my own anecdotal evidence, I do think it's widespread. I think there are more dirty "bad" cops than people realize. It's shameful, and a concerted, countrywide federal, state and local effort is needed to remove these bad cops, improve training, and monitor the situation closely.

I think that gun safety is a part of this, it's tough being a cop, because everyone has a damn gun, whether they're mentally ill, a terrorist, a schoolkid, every interaction is possibly a deadly one.

If there were so many more good cops than bad cops, there would be no bad cops.

This "us and them" you speak of in the police is more common in your country at large, so it gets into the police too. You need to get your tribalism and polarization under control. Maybe you need a new USSR or other common threat to bring you together.

I once heard it said that the police tend to deal with bad people when they're being bad and with good people when they're being bad. This affects their perceptions and how they respond to situations.

I'm sure that's part of it.

Absolutely. It's very much like what I think we see with regards to ICE agents. It's not just that a job like that attracts authoritarian types. It's not just that officers become desensitized to the people they're supposed to be serving as human beings worthy of respect and dignity. It isn't just racial attitudes and class issues. It's all of those things, and more.
