PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's Roman Catholic bishop on Sunday defended a tweet urging Catholics to not support or attend LGBTQ Pride Month events, saying it was his obligation to teach the faith "clearly and compassionately, even on very difficult and sensitive issues."

Diocese of Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin sparked a backlash beginning Saturday when he tweeted, "A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ 'Pride Month' events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children."

The posting spurred rebukes by thousands of people who replied on Twitter

"They are...especially...harmful...to children..." (Gasping, hacking, trying to swallow, waving hands at family members) So, is irony absolutely no part at all of the catechism?

That news article wins the most mundane and useless news item award for the day.

.. A Catholic bishop opposes LGBTQ ceremonies. Is this really news? It would be news if he didn't.
.. A twitter mob acts like a twitter mob and attacks the bishop. Is this really news? It would be news if they didn't.

.. In further news... Trump says something that outrages democrats.

That’s good. This priest is correct. The Church should be very open and upfront about what it stands for and if they are getting their marching orders from the Word of God, they should stick to their beliefs regardless of social backlash or pressure.

If this helps speed up driving them into irrelevancy, also good. Being martyred for their faith is supposed to be their thing anyways.

Providence has long been known as a New England gay center. The thing is RI was probably the most tolerant of the colonies. I believe it was founded as secular.

I'd say the bishop is urinating in the wind. There is a conservative evangelical wing in the RCC. I have heard them on Catholic radio, they are just as wacky as the protestant Evangelicals. I believe the RCC policy is it is ok to be gay as long as you do not act out your being gay.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A priest is asking parishioners not to leave his church over a tweet by Rhode Island’s bishop urging Roman Catholics to not support or attend LGBTQ Pride Month events.

The Rev. Edward L. Pieroni begged gay and lesbian parishioners not to leave the church during Sunday services at St. Raymond’s Roman Catholic Church in Providence, The Boston Globe reported.

“A lot of people have hung in there, but it’s like, ‘One more slap and we are done.’ I am here to beg you — and I will get on my hands and knees and beg you — not to leave,” Pieroni told the congregation.

Rhode Island is one of the most heavily Catholic states.

More than 80,000 had people responded by Monday morning. Some replied to the tweet to support the bishop while others invoked the scandals of sexual abuse of children by clergy members. Actresses Mia Farrow and Patricia Arquette were among those who criticized Tobin.

The LGBTQ group Rhode Island Pride held a rally outside the diocese’s headquarters in Providence on Sunday night.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo told reporters in Newport on Monday for an unrelated event that the bishop’s comments were “very unfortunate.” She said that she stands with the LGBTQ community and that Pride Month events are an expression of equality, love and tolerance. She told WPRO-AM she doesn’t think the bishop meant to hurt anyone, but his comments made a lot of people feel unsafe, unwanted and unloved.

Tobin, a conservative bishop, said he didn’t mean to offend anyone, but he also defended the tweet. He said in a statement Sunday that it was his obligation to teach the faith “clearly and compassionately, even on very difficult and sensitive issues

Yeah this isn't news. Who doesn't already know the Catholic Church's position on this matter? Or for that matter, the Christian position more generally which is essentially the same (and often worse).

I asked the question in the past and we now have a preferential candidate who is Christian and gay.

Why would a gay person adopt a religion so clearly anti gay based on its scriptures?

Probably because they base their beliefs off of what they think to be true as opposed to basing them off of what would benefit them the most.

Well there is that but then all gay Christians know that Jesus was gay too. :D

Was that tweet a response to a specific tweet or news article?

It seems that gay parades did have a lot of suggestive and outright graphic displays and action in the past and less now. The footage of the crazier parades, especially if children are nearby has been systematically collected and spread. That and footage of ~7-10 year old boys dressed in drag and Brazilian carnival outfits.

A sheltered catholic can react mindlessly if shown cherry picked footage like that.
