Michael R. Bloomberg has instructed advisers to draw up plans for a potential independent campaign in this year’s presidential race. His advisers and associates said he was galled by Donald J. Trump’s dominance of the Republican field, and troubled by Hillary Clinton’s stumbles and the rise of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont on the Democratic side.

This could be intereting. Will his attempt die stillborn? Or could it throw a major monkey wrench into the present campaign? Could he scuttle Trump or Hillary?

Whaddya think?

Please run. He's a fiscal conservative, social liberal, wants to focus on the US, doesn't want to fix the ME, pro-business, jobs, and etc. Not sure if he has the charisma. But I'd take a long look at him.

If he can take 5% of the vote, he might be able to sink Hillary and elect Trump. This may end up being no joke.

Disappointing that he doesn't want to run as a democrat (or as a republican). Running as an independent only helps the party that he is more removed from.

Troubled by Bernie Sanders?

He is just a guy that wants to give the people what they have wanted and what other nations have managed to give them.

I guess that is troubling to some.

Yes, I'm troubled by Bernie. I think that his economic policies are too anti-business. I and most of friends and family work for corporations. For example, he has stated that he will break up all the "too big to fail bank". That would be a disaster. Large corporations need large banks to serve their interests. If Bernie slashed all the US big banks, large corporations such as google and Intel would simply move their banking needs to large foreign owned banks. This alone would slash thousands and thousands of US jobs. His plan would personally benefit me as I work for a small regional bank. But it would hurt the country. Should we do a better job of regulating the "too big to fail banks" - absolutely. Should we put them out of business and lay off their workers - No.

I don't think he'd win. I do think it's realistic that he could draw enough votes, in some swing states, to affect the outcome of the election. If he gets a plurality of the votes in several of the swing states, it might throw the election into the House of Representatives.

..........a typical line from a corporatist who feels the rich should rule us. Large corporations need large banks to help them screw us and destroy our environment. Their purpose under aegis of the current flock of CEO's is to take from society in an unfair manner. They have destroyed large plots of land, polluted rivers and poisoned people (for example, Flint Michigan) and worked people without paying them fairly. I am all in for Bernie on the bank business. It has ruined many a retirement...and many a working life...and never made up for its sins. It just keeps screwing the public. Time for the Citis, the Chases and the Wells Fargos to go!

What is your definition of a "corporatist"? But absolutely, I'm pro-business, very pro economic development. I chair a board that helps finance startups, promote employee retraining programs, promote manufacturing processes (such as Lean and etc.) and help exporters.

I don't know about Bloomberg, but it is a sure thing he is not doing it for the good of the country...just for his own financial interest. As for Bernie. I think he can win and as time passes his numbers just get better. You have to sort out all the bogey man "socialism" scare the corporate mainstream press has been selling to see that Bernie's policies are fair and would be beneficial. You really ought to be voting for what is good for you and stop letting these saps like Trump play king of the mountain in the political arena with their money.

People didn't like what Teddy Roosevelt did.

But it was good for the nation, even if some may have lost money.

How does it help the nation to close down larger companies? How does it help to close down larger banks? All that does it cuts jobs, increases costs for consumers, and hurts our competitiveness with foreign banks. It would help the smaller banks though. That's about it.

I really don't know what you're talking about.

Certainly banks that are "too big to fail" are a bad idea.

But Bernie has no plan to close the banks.

My definition of corporatist is someone just like you who professes what you do.

I do agree that socialism is often used as a boogeyman to scare people. I didn't say that I'd support Bloomberg, nor have I said I'd support Trump either. I do think that there's some possibility that Trump is trolling, but I don't know. Either way I don't want more justices like Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court.

At this point I see him as more likely a spoiler than a winner. I'm just not sure who he hurts more short of him getting enough electoral votes to prevent a majority. I do think that if it goes to the House, that favors the Republicans.

All this billionaire will do is make it easier for the Democrat.

He will do what Perot did. Mostly take votes from the Republican candidate.

Maybe help elect another Clinton.

Do you have a link to support that? The stories that I remember reading stated that most of the Perot voters would have voted for Clinton. It was close, but a majority would have voted Clinton. Secondly, I don't see a lot of republicans or conservatives voting for Bloomberg! He's a social liberal (very socially liberal) and is an atheist!

You claim not to know, then you make an assertion about his motives?

The argument that he's just doing it for the money falls flat in the face of the fact that being Mayor of New York paid him a fraction of what he was making on his business interests.

A better argument would be that he's doing it out of an overblown ego and sense of self-worth like Trump, but unlike "the Donald" Bloomberg actually took a pay cut to do a public service job and stuck with it.

Sorry for the derail, but it really is a persistent urban myth that Perot hurt Bush against Clinton. Actually the amount of voters favoring Bush vs Clinton was pretty close. The Perot impact was bigger at helping the republican governors and legislative races:
