Miss Hynde said that she took "full responsibility" for being sexually assaulted by an Ohio biker gang when she was 21, while she was drunk, high on drugs and had chosen to get on the back of a gang member’s motorcycle.

Telegraph

Chrissie Hynde used the "r" word and all hell is let loose !

Guess she also thought they shouldn't be prosecuted, right? I mean if getting raped was HER fault and not theirs.

Maybe our language is not used well enough in cases like this.

I would say that the word "responsibility" does not have to mean "blame" or "culpability". Culpability is for the men who had sex with a whacked out Hynde - maybe she was so whacked out that violence or threat was not needed. That should not take away culpability.

The problem with drugs and alcohol is that people gradually slip into getting more screwed up when the plan was just to get buzzed. So the responsibility for putting oneself in a dangerous place with lowered mental ability is not a black and white thing.

The closest comparison is getting intoxicated and walking in an alley or around a large milling crowd of ne'er-do-wells and counting your money while stumbling drunk. You shouldn't have gotten so drunk that you did that -- but do you have "responsibility" for that ? Or is another word better to use?

To take the analogy a bit further, drunk sex/rape can be a bit different than assaulting or robbing a drunk, because you don't often have a would be robber hanging out in the bar plying drinks to a particular target. That is some Cask of Amontillado shit right there.

I think the language is just fine. For some twisted reason, there are a lot people that think you should not be responsible for the consequences of reckless behavior.

Oh goodness, not another responsible, partly responsible, fully responsible sexual assault thread.

It doesn't matter how responsible for her condition she was. Sexual assault is still against the law.

It is as if people just want to be able to wag a finger and say "See! She was partially responsible for her violent sexual assault!"

"You know if you don't want to entice a rapist, don't wear high heels so you can't run from him.”

*insert oft told argument about rape victims often being based on things other than dress... and footwear*

*insert off-hand retort to above argument*

*repeat for about 360 posts*

I think I have this covered? Can we lock this please to save people the trouble of repeating history?

Hackles.

If you upset people, you raise their hackles.

Heckles are comments (usually disparaging of the speaker, and often witty or comic in nature) yelled out from a crowd.

Hackles are the hairs on a dog's or wolf's neck and back that stand up to warn off a threat; raised hackles indicate the threat of a violent response.

Not particularly overt or slutty, especially in comparison to today's acts.
