1. Your first comic book
I started reading at a fairly young age, and so I can't recall what my first comic book was. The first comic book I made a point of buying regularly was Dennis the Menace.

2. Your favorite character
Bookish_Beast.jpg

Beast, without a doubt. Sure, he's got enhanced strength, enhanced speed, and enhanced agility, but superpower-wise he's operating at the level of Captain America, Black Panther, Spider-Man, etc. His powers are relatively weak compared to the big hitters in the Marvel universe, but what makes him fun is his brain. He's erudite, brilliant (found the cure for the Legacy virus with tragic results), eccentric, compassionate, and funny. He's not without flaws. Instead of accepting that some mutants look different, he tried to "cure" his unusual appearance and only made himself look even more beastly, learning an important lesson about self image the hard way.

He's bi-curious, but I don't think he's had any boyfriends. The writers don't seem to like addressing this aspect of the character much, which is a pity because I think it makes him more interesting.

He has a feral side to his personality, and I have to admit that it's fun to watch the well-spoken, soft-hearted intellectual cut loose in battle. Do not expect many five-syllable words after he starts growling.

Oh, and he has the best catchphrase in all of comicdom...

...which inevitably gets used at the best "oh, shit!" moments.

New to comics so probably not the best list, but here I go:p

Your first comic book.
The Phantom. no idea which one and I have no idea if I still have it

Deadpool Killology
Favorite comic book movie.
The Avengers
Favorite comic publisher.
Marvel
Your favorite run or series of all time.
Deadpool Killology

  1. Your first comic book.
I don't remember, it was so long ago, probably either Archie or Richie Rich. My first superhero book was X-Men #2 (which is unfortunately lost to the sands of time).
  2. Your favorite character.
When I first started reading in the Silver Age, it was The Hulk. Currently I would have to go with Deadpool, though depending on the run Deadpool can be very hit or miss.
  3. A comic that is underrated.
Manifest Destiny. This is a comic about Lewis & Clark, and what if when they crossed the Mississippi they found the land to be teaming with very strange, and very deadly, flora and fauna. The art work is top notch, and the story arcs are very well written.
  4. Your guilty pleasure comic or character.
Cassie Hack from Hack/Slash. I have to admit that I was drawn to the comic because of Cassie appearing half nude on just about every cover. Hack/Slash is a fun romp through slasher film tropes.
  5. Comic character you feel you are most like (or wish you were).
There's a big gap between those two. Most like = Jughead, I always though of him more as a stoner and underachiever than an idiot. Wish I were = Nova, just put on the helmet, and bam! superpowers.
  6. Most annoying character.
    Marvel Boy from Young Avengers.
  7. Favorite comic couple.
    Superman and Wonder Woman
  8. Best series being published right now.
God is Dead. Jesus returns, Christians rejoice! Surprise, it's Zeus! Not to mention the major gods from every other pantheon. Chaos ensues as the gods fight each other for domination of the world, and a group of scientists discover how to create new gods.
  9. Most touching comic book/comic book scene.
The death of Dogpool in Deadpool Kills Deadpool, a real tear-jerker :p
  10. Dream Vs match.
Deadpool Vs Wolverine, the real thing, not that crap from the X-Men Origins movie.
  11. Favorite comic book cartoon series.
The X-Men series from the '90s.
  12. A comic everyone should read.
Watchmen. If you only ever read one comic/graphic novel, this is the one.
  13. A book you’ve read more than five times.
    X-Men #2. I wore that book out.
  14. Current (or most recent) comic-themed wallpaper.
    This is my current wallpaper:
    batman_cartoon_3-wallpaper-800x480.jpg
  15. A Picture from the comic you’re reading right now.
    Read this one last night:
    MQAwADQAMwAxADcAOQA=.jpg
  16. Funniest comic book/comic book scene.
Deadpool Bi-Annual #1, when Tatanka-Tank (giant cyber-Orca) is defeated by the animal handler jerking him off.
  17. Most useless Villain.
Cluemaster, the most useless Batman villain I can think of (and that is saying a lot).
  18. Favorite B-list character.
Does Drax the Destroyer count as B-list these days? He definitely counted before the Guardians movie, but I'm not sure anymore. How about Nova? If Drax doesn't count, I'm going with Nova.
  19. Comic book city/universe you wish you lived in.
Attilan, cuz that would make me Inhuman, muwhahahah!
  20. Favorite super power or skill.
The power to move you (thanks Tenacious D!)
  21. Favorite writer.
Jonathan Hickman, he has written Fantastic Four, Avengers and several other titles for Marvel, but I am partial to his work with Image (Pax Romana, East of West, Red Mass for Mars, etc.) and especially his current work on God is Dead.
  22. A comic book second volume which disappointed you.
That's a tough one. It is hard to remember which run was volume two, but it is usually a change in art work that usually turns me off to a comic run. I don't like a lot of the line heavy work from the late '80s and early '90s, but I was not reading comics much back then anyway. I really hate the new school art work, and I dropped the new Silver Surfer run because of it, but that is volume 7. So, pick something that is new school and volume 2, and there you have it, but I probably didn't even read it because of the art work.
  23. Your favorite artist.
Matthew Roberts, I don't even know what else he has drawn, but his work on Manifest Destiny is amazing IMHO.

That's all I have for now, will finish the questionnaire later...

Your guilty pleasure comic or character.
I did enjoy Alpha Flight

Interesting pick. I was a fan of Alpha Flight in the '90s, and don't really view it as a guilty pleasure. I think it fits more in the category of underrated. This also gives me the chance to bring up (once again), that the most valuable comic book in my collection is Alpha Flight #17, which has the first appearance of Big Hero 6.

Best series being published right now.
of the ones I know...Ms Marvel

I have never read Ms. Marvel. I tried to read Captain Marvel when Carol Danvers took over, but could not get past the artwork. I may have to pick up an issue of Ms. Marvel.

I have to agree with KeepTalking. I'm not sure Alpha Flight counts as a guilty pleasure.

Northstar can be an arrogant asshole, but you can't help but feel sorry for him when he tries to cope with his sister's insanity. It's obvious that he loves her and wants to help her, but is powerless to do so. Being gay is at best the second most interesting thing about that character.

I have never read Ms. Marvel.
I've only read the newest one with Kamala Khan (Not the older Danvers ones)
I tried to read Captain Marvel when Carol Danvers took over, but could not get past the artwork. I may have to pick up an issue of Ms. Marvel.
Yeah the Artwork for Captain Marvel was certainly...interesting
I liked it personally and if you go to the next Captain Marvel series (Higher, Further, Faster, More) it goes back to a more conventional art style

It's the closest I have to a "Guilty Pleasure" given that I don't really have much experience outside of major titles beyond this one and I did not mean to offer any insult to others who like this story (I liked it as well):)

I had to look up Kamala Khan since I stopped collecting long ago.

Her powers are much weaker (Danvers is practically Superman), which right off the bat makes her more interesting. Add to that the fact that she's an awkward nerd and dealing with occasional racism, and it gets more interesting still.

Although it sounds like Marvel is deliberately trying to give greater emphasis to the Inhumans while diminishing the role of mutants because of their copyright squabbles with FOX. Stupid. I like the Inhumans and all, but they don't remotely compare to the X-Men and related titles.

Your first comic book.
It may have been X-Men #1, or it may have been an issue of Gen13. All I know is it was something that came out in the early 1990s, and that it was published by either Marvel or Wildstorm.

Your guilty pleasure comic or character.
post-Identity Crisis Doctor Light

Comic character you feel you are most like (or wish you were).
I feel most often like a combination of Doctor Manhattan and Victor Zsasz: emotionally detached, fatalistic, and viewing death as the only way to escape meaninglessness.

Most annoying character.
Squirrel Girl

Best series being published right now.
Über, Kieron Gillen's exhaustively researched alternate history epic about how WWII might have turned out if Nazi Germany had actually developed super-soldiers.

Favorite comic book cartoon series.
The Maxx

Favorite super power or skill.
The ability to control one's own body. At the relatively realistic levels it equates to biofeedback techniques to adjust metabolism, dull pain, increase concentration, etc.; at superhuman levels, it amounts to Plastic Man level malleability, various degrees of shapeshifting, and ultimately at the extreme, Dr. Manhattan level control down to the subatomic level. Manhattan was so devoid of personality he never did anything more interesting with that power than self-duplication and size-shifting, but over the years, Plastic Man has demonstrated that he's basically deadlier and more durable than T-1000. Anything T-1000 can do to you, Plastic Man can do from several miles away.

Favorite writer.
Warren Ellis (Thunderbolts, Stormwatch, The Authority, Black Summer, No Hero, Planetary, Transmetropolitan)

Your favorite artist.
Juan Jose Ryp. I'm a fan of artists who pack a lot of detail into their work. Geof Darrow's more detailed, but Ryp is much more prolific.

A book you plan on reading.
Ember

A comic you wish they would make into a movie.
Impaler, which is basically a story about a vampire apocalypse featuring the coolest take on vampires I've ever seen.

Favorite comic book movie.
Watchmen.

Favorite comic publisher.
Avatar Press.

A comic you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving.
The Boys. Although I'm a big fan of superhero comics with dark storylines and extreme sex and violence, Garth Ennis has always struck me as overly juvenile and prone to taking superficial cheap shots whenever he does parodies, so I didn't expect the long-term arcs to be as compelling as they turned out to be.

Your favorite run or series of all time.
Stormwatch #37-50 by Warren Ellis and Tom Raney. Stormwatch is the story of a United Nations sponsored superhero group. Under Ellis's pen, it actually got interesting. Characters developed personalities, the team developed a direction, and the story began to incorporate political commentary from a non-US-centric perspective. It was the first superhero comic I'd ever read that had things to say about geopolitics that could actually be taken seriously.

3. A comic that is underrated

flagg_01.jpg

It's probably more obscure than underrated, but they did the "corporatocracy dystopian future" thing long before it was cool, to the point where I wonder how much of Jennifer Government was inspired by it. For all that it raised troubling questions about the growing power of corporations, it got its message across with a lot of absurdist humor.

Wakka ding hoy!

4. Your guilty pleasure comic or character

Badger_040.jpg

I know it's wrong to play crazy for laughs. On top of that, this comic book was really cheesy, but I'm a sucker for absurd humor. I have to wonder how much Deadpool borrowed from Badger.

The Badger was one of the personalities of Norbert Sykes, who suffered from multiple personality disorder. The Badger was a martial arts master who could talk to animals and thought he was a superhero. None of the other personalities knew martial arts nor thought they were superheroes. Norbert lived in a mansion with Hamm The Weather Wizard, and like Deadpool often did more harm than good because he's crazy. He addresses everyone as "Larry" (even women), and we later find out that Larry was the name of the stepfather who sexually abused him. For some reason, he often used random tools (e.g. socket wrenches) as weapons against other martial artists.

Favorite funny moment from the comic: the Badger receives an incredibly specific and detailed prediction in a fortune cookie, and got really excited about it until the Chinese restaurant owner told him "Don't believe those things. They're baked by Italians in Hoboken."

Best series being published right now.
Über, Kieron Gillen's exhaustively researched alternate history epic about how WWII might have turned out if Nazi Germany had actually developed super-soldiers.

I picked up the FCBD issue of Über last May, which presents what I assume to be a synopsis of the first few issues of Über in dossier format. It looked really intriguing, but I never bought any issues. I think I am going to have to go looking for the first volume of the Trade Paperback to see if I like it.

Question: Is Painkiller Jane a series worth pursuing?
I found a random issue, it was kinda interesing and was wondering how the series as a whole holds up

I have only read a few issues myself, but I liked what I read.

  1. Your first comic book.
Had read some sporadically, but really started collecting after a couple issues of X-Men (fall of the mutants)
  2. Your favorite character.
    Rogue
  3. A comic that is underrated.
    Girl Genius
  4. Your guilty pleasure comic or character.
    Sunstone
  5. Most annoying character.
Never liked Gambit, that might count
  6. Best series being published right now.
    Death Vigil
  7. Most touching comic book/comic book scene.
hmm... maybe the origin of the Hulk... not the gamma bomb, but the origin of Banner's deep seated anger
  8. Dream Vs match.
  9. Favorite comic book cartoon series.
    Justice League
  10. A comic everyone should read.
    Girl Genius
  11. Funniest comic book/comic book scene.
The original Damage Control series. (lent it to a friend and never got them back :( )
  12. Most useless Villain.
    The vanisher, or maybe crusader
  13. Comic book city/universe you wish you lived in.
First choice: Marvel, second choice: the universe my characters live in (CoH characters written into a writing groups universe)
  14. Favorite super power or skill.
    Super speed
  15. Dream Character Team Up.
Thor (or another heavy hitter), Rogue, and Maddox.
One minute after the fight starts you got 50 Rogues with the power of Thor!
  16. Favorite comic book movie.
    Avengers
  17. Favorite comic publisher.
    Marvel

5. Comic character you feel you are most like (or wish you were).
The character I wish I were most like is Beast, for reasons already stated. I'm not sure which character I am most like since we are all unbiased in our perception of ourselves, but it's probably someone a lot less impressive. ;)

6. Most annoying character.
All atheists in the Marvel universe. They live in a world in which the Norse god of thunder lives in a mansion in New York and has a publicist. Practically every god from every religion exists somewhere in their universe, and most of them have tried to destroy New York city at one time or another. Howard the Duck routinely got into arguments with the Abrahamic god (leading me to believe that he must be Jewish).

It's not just that gods really exist in their universe, but that gods are in the news on a fairly regular basis. The only Marvel atheist who has an excuse is Deadpool, who is the only one who knows that he is a comic book character and thus that nothing in his universe is actually real.

Close second place: The Beyonder.

@Marc,

OMG, I love love love love love Girl Genius!

To those of you unfamiliar with it, it's a web comic, so you can read the whole thing for free. Go now!
