Debt: The fabric of our lives

Yeah, it's been a tough thread for me. Called out and put in my place. Suffering the merciless sting of personal attacks and content-free gibes from the forum's leading intellectual lights.

Generally this forum doesn't like contrary views. Liberals are no different from the religious right in that they don't like their dogmas challenged!

What contrary view did dismal offer? All he has done in this thread is play dumb, followed by wallowing in his own perceived persecution while attempting to project that persecution upon others.

People that are obnoxious think it is everyone else.

And I give a clear definition of liberal thinking so your comment of no true liberal displays no willingness to even read.
I read it. It was a version of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy.

I then pointed out that liberals are not willing to examine their own dogma. They are only willing to "examine" that which their dogma tells them is "evil". This is the same as the far right - never willing to examine their own dogmatic beliefs.

So, the entire spectrum of liberals is exactly like the far-right end of the conservative spectrum?

What bullshit. Certainly there are those who are not willing to examine their own dogma on both ends of the spectrum, but to paint all liberals this way simply displays your own bias.

:hysterical:

Whether this is more of your pretend ignorance or the real thing, thanks for the chuckle.

When you post your little cartoon it is always the sign you have nothing to say.

Your ideas are mostly a bunch of nonsense that you refuse to defend and when the going gets tough you post a stupid cartoon like a three year old.

Meh.

When you post a bald assertion it is almost always the sign you have nothing to say.

Your ideas are mostly a bunch of nonsense that you refuse to defend and when the going gets tough you post the same illogical nonsense over and over, like a three year old.

Perhaps you would do better to criticise your own contributions, before criticising the contributions of others?

"Played dumb"?

Debt for a car is stupid.Debt for a home can be stupid if you think you need a big house.

You can of course always claim my assertions are illogical.

But you never seem to be able to demonstrate it.

You prefer to do things like cry about how this is philosophy and you can't possibly discuss philosophy.

Debt for a car is stupid.
Not necessarily. Utility of the new car can be enough to compensate for the higher cost.

Or a nicer neighborhood than you can afford. When my parents were buying their first house after coming to the States the first realtor they got kept steering them toward houses higher than what their target price was. She kept insisting they could afford it and even to go to 30 year mortgage. They fired her and got one that could take direction.

Dismal is not challenging anything. He is posting snarky comments at those who are actually discussing the topic and generally behaving in a goading manner. He is also derailing the thread. Both are TOU violations. Perhaps it would be best if he did leave the thread or get on topic. And all of us should end this derail about Dismal and his dismal behavior, along with the resultant derail about who is or isn't a liberal and what liberals do or do not do.

I am not wearing my mod hat with this post, but I will be if the thread doesn't settle down and get back on track. Thank you.

Whatever he's doing he is trying to inject an alternative view.

Even if it fails most of the time the effort is worthwhile.

It is only by seriously considering alternative views that you understand the strengths and weaknesses of your own.

I'm glad we have mods here who do a great job of staying above the personal attacks on posters.

You think it's a derail in a politics forum to ask what policies people are advocating in this thread?

What a fucking joke.

Yeah, we've had them try to aim too high, also. Simple fix: Don't give them the finances, just the target price.
