Derail from Feminist Gamer: Catcalling on the Streets

Why don't you think its about black men considering they made up the majority of harassers?
(and since I just said men and did not specify a "the category of men on their do not disturb list" we all know I must mean WHITE men)
and how they are persecuted and ill treated and misunderstood,
What's with the strawman? I never even hinted white men were being persecuted or targeted in any way from this crisis. I just found it amusing that SJWs were probably giving themselves micro strokes from the cognitive dissonance of blaming men yet ignoring the specific group that unleashed most of the carnage.

It's not a strawman

It is how this debate is seen, and not just by me.

Gamergate, Catcallgate, notallmengate,

All of these things come across to not a few a people as "Stop hurting angry white men's feelings."

See, I know a lot of people. I know a lot of white men. They don't behave this way. And they don't feel the need to defend this behavior under the banner of defending freedom. If a man wants to be a boor, a jerk, and an asshole, he is free to be all those things, but he is not free to be all those things and then have no one ever mention that he is being a boor, a jerk and an asshole.

UPDATE: Hollaback! released a statement on Tuesday apologizing for the racial and class implications of the video and are starting a new project to make the conversation about street harassment more inclusive:
So instead of walking around for 10 hours and finding 2 white men and 18 black or latino men they will have to walk around for 100 hours to find 20 white men to edit into a 3 minute video about how menacing men are.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, but the producers admitted that they had more white men filmed, but didn't edit them into the final version because of "audio problems".

It is a strawman because I never even hinted that white men were being persecuted, ill treated or misunderstood over this. Yet you used those exact words after paraphrasing my "do not disturb list" remark. The fact you don't see it as a strawman is solely due to your polarized racial thinking.

I don't trust SJWs to be honest. They didn't even realize how they were making men of color appear in their attempt to be the "victim". They will just have to be more careful and put more effort into making a politically correct male bashing video next time.

For the record, I do think most of the catcallers were annoying especially the ones that followed her. It still doesn't make her a "victim" anymore than I'm a "victim" of straw-maning in this thread.

Really, Nexus? Just look at this:

So instead of walking around for 10 hours and finding 2 white men and 18 black or latino men they will have to walk around for 100 hours to find 20 white men to edit into a 3 minute video about how menacing men are.

Just because you didn't use the actual word "persecuted" doesn't negate the sentiment you're expressing here.

I repeat, I don't think white men are persecuted in any possible manner over this. After I have clarified my remarks multiple times it is you that are confused and incorrect if you think I'm trying to communicate that white men need pity over this. Its ridiculous to assert over and over what another poster is thinking after they have said that's not what they are implying. Its those with the natural tendency to make strawman arguments that lead people to believe they have the true insight into another's thinking and their assumptions of what they're implying overrides what the person is actually saying.

While there are some posters here that obfuscate and virtually all of their posts are of a dismal rhetorical slippery nature, I'm not one of them.

Ok I see. You're saying that the catcalling was actually coming from primarily men of color and that when that was noticed they fabricated the lie about editing the white men out. Presumably then they're out there getting more video so if they're ever called on it, they can produce white men doing catcalling too.

Am I understanding your position correctly now?

I wonder why if there were not a lot of white guys catcalling (or at least a per capita parity of catcalling) that Hollaback would say that they did.

The Hollaback! video makers couldn't find white men, but this

Their apology recognizes the racial bias of their video, but did nothing to acknowledge its erasure of black and brown women. So last weekend, I took to the streets of New York to speak to some fellow black and brown women about their experiences with street harassment.

As (bad) luck would have it, while we were shooting a video about how women of color were affected by street harassment, one of our interviewees was approached — totally unsolicited — by a white man who asked her for a kiss.

No editing necessary.

UPDATE: Hollaback! released a statement on Tuesday apologizing for the racial and class implications of the video and are starting a new project to make the conversation about street harassment more inclusive: "...we're using the money raised to create our own video series — with the first one currently under development and scheduled to release within the next two weeks."

I think they will make future videos with less men of color to keep the donations flowing. No one will reasonably ask them for the original 10 hour unedited footage to confirm if they were truthful about most of the white cat-callers having audio problems so there's no need for them to try to pass off new footage as old.

I remember once watching a woman from Peru calling the girls from "Girls Gone Wild" (it was a commercial for it) putas. She felt they were doing something wrong and disgusting and bringing out the animal in men and creating a situation where men would expect that from other women. Kind of odd.

She was from a culture still heavily steeped in a macho patriarchal system. Where maintaining morals for both sexes is the woman's responsibility. Men have no responsibility and thus can never be blamed.

That sounds frigging awesome. Our society should be more like that.

I'm very much in favour of anything that allows me to avoid taking the blame for the shit I do.

:)

I prefer a society where sleeping with, say, me, is not strongly discouraged.

You can always move. 70% of the rest of the world is still like this. :tonguea:

The downside to that is that the men that do shit to you or your significant other that you don't like won't be blamed either. I think what you are looking for is a Tom Sawyer system instead of a patriarchal system :)

You know it could be that much of the catcalling the woman in the video experienced was just a misunderstanding. Maybe all the comments weren't directed at her, but someone else nearby, and because she is a bit narcisstic, she assumed she was the center of attention. Check out this video to see what I mean:

Not me, but my daughter. She said this just happened to her at a gas station:

D: *putting air in my tires*
Random guy: Hey, what are you trying to do? Are you trying to check your tire pressure? *walks up* Let go of the lever and a little thing will pop up to tell you the tire pressure.
D: I know how to check and put air in my tires. But thank you.
Guy: Oh, look at you knowing how to do both roles.
D: Excuse me?
Guy: Being beautiful like a woman and competent like a man.

So he approaches her to offer unsolicited advice - treating her like she doesn't know what she is doing - then confirms his crappy attitude about women by implying only men can be competent.
