The book is about children who go through magic doorways to magical worlds. And then come back. And their families, all of society, cannot deal with the reality. Mom and Dad can't accept that the World of the Dead is real, or Oz, or Candyland, or whatever, thus they cannot accept that their son or daughter's experiences there are valid. They won't accept that their kid changed for something that actually happened.

So they treat the children as sick, needing therapy and drugs. They can't handle the kids' reality, so they hammer their own into place. Not as evil villains, but merely ignorant and prejudiced people trying to do their best with a situation they're not prepared to accept.

bad propaganda kills a dark fantasy story

* Social engineering wrapped up in a horror fantasy story, which seems to be the intent. Cade is not a boy. Cade is a mentally ill girl who identifies as a boy and is catered to throughout the story, something hinted at in the book but only clear at the end. And the response to one character calling Cade a girl is horror by the other children, as if speaking this truth is unacceptable. That makes this book unacceptable. For many other people, the fact that it has open acceptance and discussion of bisexuality, homosexuality and asexuality (though no sexual acts) should be another reason not to buy this book.

I'd love to think that Wihiteon was into performance art, but sadly, must conclude that she's just on the side of, in the book's setting, the villains of the piece.
