There seems to be some concern recently about fake news with pressure being put on Facebook to engage in censorship. But seriously, fake news has been part of news in America for a long time now. Why the interest now?

TV news was contained in the TV and the water cooler. Now social media and so on are shifting faster than water can evaporate within a sea of flashes. Way more flashing happening nowadays. It makes us more susceptible to the supervillain rich manipulation when we have self worth stock in social media, too. It determines the course of our lives, monitors them and attempts to alter them. But I agree it is nothing new as far as what people do. That may be one reason it is so easily done.

I doubt there's a country out there that has not released some fake news.

The problem with Russia is the state controlled news organizations that are used to distribute it. Nobody is Russia is going to cry foul.

Nobody said anything about Russia. So why?

Why should Russia be any different from anyone else.

The problem with fake news is that they have discovered that conservative voters are incredibly gullible and subject to confirmation bias. If you post a news story stating that President Obama signed an executive order banning the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools, a good number of conservatives will think it is true.

This happened over and over again in the past year.

When Donald Trump says he will build a wall, they believe him. When he says he will bring back the jobs, they believe him. I don't know exactly why we need to protect such people, but it seems to be the right thing to do.

It's not just Facebook.
Here is a news from the "Telegraph" about evil kremlin operatives trying to make british soldiers look bad. Except that nothing of the sort actually happened and fucking drunk british soldiers simply broke a nose of a random latvian guy, but who is going to complain? exactly - nobody. Everyone in the west will take it as a fact because it's coming from respectable western media outlet.

Or another story, not really a journalists fault but anyway. European space agency recently smashed a probe on Mars, who was blamed for it? exactly - russians and their "annexation" of Crimea. I am not kidding, the guy from Romania who is a head of company which were supposed to test that shit blamed russians for failing to test it.
And don't get me started about Syria, everything is a russian fault, no matter how ridiculous and lame the accusation.

I think Loren mentioned Russia because of this.

Did you even bother to read your own link? It reported on an investigation by the British Army of a possible set up. It also reports that local media disputes the set up claim. Are you saying the investigation by the army is a fabrication of the Telegraph?

Which claim made by the Telegraph in that article is fake? Exact quote please. Or do you just toss around the allegation every time it is something from a Western media outlet regardless of whether it is baseless?

Putin fanboys complaining about fake news is like Jeffrey Dahmer complaining about people's dining habits.

Yes, I did bother to read it completely.

There was no basis for their claims, none at all, yet here they are. speculating about evil russian propaganda. Same thing over and over and over and these stories are never corrected, people still believe that Russia invaded poor innocent Georgia in 2008. People still believe that there were russian snipers in Odessa massacre.

Which claim(s)? You failed to quote the claim(s) you are referring to as I requested.

I gather you are perfectly fine with Telegraph reporting.

I still don't know which specific claims in that article you are disputing. You have failed to quote anything. I find nothing obviously false in it. I do not see anything unreasonable about the claim that the army is investigating multiple angles to this incident.

I told you what is wrong with it - everything.

So now you post an article critical of a different article in a completely different publication (The Daily Mail)? WTF? Do you retract your claim about fake news/claims in the Telegraph article? I can only assume so with this massive goal post shift.

Edit: now it seems to be referring to the Telegraph article (the original link I clicked on was referring only to a Daily Mail article and an analysis of that article).

Your link gets it wrong on the very first sentence:

From your article:

The newspaper claims two members of the Grenadier Guards regiment were attacked by a gang while eating in a McDonald's fast food restaurant, and that a professional camera crew just happened to be on hand waiting to film the incident.

Um, no, completely false. Let's see what the Telegraph article is actually reporting:

The Army is investigating whether two soldiers were caught up in a Russian-backed plot to discredit British forces after they were set upon by a local gang and then filmed brawling while on exercise in Latvia.

Ok, so it is making the claim that the Army is investing whether it was. The Telegraph takes _no position_ on whether it actually was. It does _not_ make that claim that it was a set up.

Further, the Telegraph article also reports this:

He said: "The provocation was 100 per cent from the British side. They were behaving idiotically and just looking for a fight. They were completely drunk. There was no camera crew, but of course people filmed what was happening on their mobile phones. Hopefully in the next two or three days that will come out and people will be able to see for themselves what happened."

In other words, it is reporting both perspectives on the story (the "set up" claim and the "100% British soldiers fault" claim), and reports that the Army and the Lativan police are conducting investigations to determine the truth of the matter.

Try reading these articles more carefully next time instead of making baseless false accusations.

Nope, they are talking about Telegraph (and other crap news), so try again.

Just edited the response (the link I had originally clicked on seemed to only refer to a Daily Mail article).

read the damn article
Fucking Telegraph and other crap news posted the news about evil russians in a matter of hours from it happening. And it's been almost a month without retraction.
And it's been more than 2 years without retraction from LA times. I wish Kremlin started suing western papers for money.
