Falwell gets $10.5 million for resigning from Liberty U

What, did he leave them a DVD of the three-way? Christian porn rocks!

Also -- triple ugh -- he appropriated MLK as he left. "Free at last!!" Liberty had a stringent chastity requirement for all students. Perhaps they should allow orgies with glossolalia at climax.

I'm surprised he didn't tell them to get their college off his land. Or at the least, it's a lesson he should have learned a long time ago.

Side note: It was Jerry Falwell Sr, who engineered the downfall of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, after their sex scandal, where Bakker used church funds to pay for the silence of a church secretary. In this case, the Church corporation owned all the real estate, including the five homes which the Bakkers used, depending on how they felt at the moment. Jim Bakker found himself out of work and homeless in one stroke. It wasn't much longer before the Federal Government was paying his room and board.

When the Reverend Jimmy Swaggart was defrocked by the World Wide Church of God, better known as the Pentecostal Church, after a sex scandal, Church Elders were surprised to discover that the Baton Rouge church and college campus were the personal property of Swaggart, not property of the Church corporation. Swaggart changed the signs and became an independent church.

He might have.
LU: we need your resignation.
Jr: i quit.
LU: Great, get out.
Jr: okay. My contract promises me a severance package of...
LU: Hold on. You're quitting only because we don't want to fire you and face a court expose of the naughty bits. People testifying about "the open secret" and whatever. You get nothing.
Jr: Fine. Then as your landlord, you have ten days to-
LU: Wait, wait, wait. Let's not be hasty. Severance pay, you said? Five mil?
Jr: Make it ten.

What would Trump's price be? If 10.5 mil is the standard unit -- for convenience, call it the FFF, or Falwell Fuck-Off Fee -- getting rid of Trump would be still be a bargain at, say, 20 FFFs. If I was still working, I'd accept it as a payroll deduction.

<bump>

Since this scandal (and the latest news about an August 30th 911 call regarding him, where he was found intoxicated and bleeding after a fall), I have been interested in the fallout and perception of the students and staff at Liberty University.

Just did a search and found this article from August 25, where a professor makes some remarkably naive and ironic statements. They claimed to have learned their lesson when it comes to Falwell, but this is a culture that produces Trump's loyal base and they still excuse the same behaviors from him.

Professor Karen Swallow Prior (now at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary), notes "...ultimately it does point to the fact that the core of our belief---that we are to put our faith in God, not in men."

"The kind of arrogance and authoritarian leadership that we experienced as faculty was really just a symptom of this lifestyle that was one in which that he thought he could do anything and get away with it."

"...evangelicals will continue to value behavior versus faith."

If that last line was in the universe of being true, evangelicals should not be voting for Trump in the election. That will spell some trouble for his campaign.

A terrific read on life at Liberty U. is Kevin Roose's The Unlikely Disciple (2010), written about his experiences there during the last days of Jerry Sr. The level of abstinence expected of the student body was total. It went beyond abstinence: one of the youth counselors questioned the author about masturbation, and set a goal for him of zero self-abuse -- followed up by an obsessive (to my mind) amount of follow-up to find out where Kevin was on that journey. With that culture, what can the young zealots at Liberty be thinking?
Also remember Falwell Sr.'s scathing denunciation of the Bakkers back in the 80s, when the Jim Bakker/Jessica Hahn stuff came out, and the Jim Bakker/other guys stuff was alleged. Falwell said it made his "blood boil" to hear about Jim's escapades. It's a shame we'll never get to hear Jerry Sr.'s holy tirade over Li'l Jerry, the pool guy, and wifey. Let he who is without sin cast the first loofah.

Holier-than-thou pious frauds like the Falwells, Swaggarts, Bakkers and company have never been into it for anything more than personal gain. One wishes that their followers, the decent ones anyway, would somehow just grow up and give a great big "fuck you" to these parasitic dickheads. The whole dynamic is a fascinating observation on the human condition.
