Hey, if you try and bribe Russian officials and don't give the American officials at least a decent taste, they will sic the FBI on your ass and you'll find yourself in prison. Let that be a lesson to the next group of guys.

So let's say that the process in selecting the city to host the world cup and other soccer events is corrupt and that the committee that decides the city accepts personal payoffs to influence their decision.
Should that really be a federal crime? Since FIFA is a private entity, that sounds like more of an internal issue than one the feds should be concerned with, right? No city has a legal right to have a fair shot at hosting a major soccer event, does it?

Don't worry. These are all essentially minor issues and things are better for the people on this planet than they've ever been in history. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't constantly strive to improve and work to remove things like the ones you're worrying about from our societies, but you should keep them in perspective.

There is an oddity in FIFA finally being taken to task... by a nation that doesn't care much about the sport FIFA runs.
Charging FIFA with corruption is like charging the pope with being catholic.
That said, this has really been misreported to some degree. They are charging specific people, not FIFA and those people were ratted out by an American informant and are mostly involved in CONCACAF (North American) events.
If you want a good conspiracy theory the one making the rounds seems to be Obama and Holder were butthurt by FIFA giving the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

FIFA is about as worthless a thing as I have seen. People who become devoted fans to "the game" if they spend their money on it and gamble on it, they are diverting their attention from things they would rather not be thinking about....like their absolute and utterly futile political situation. The story pukes me.

arkirk you are completely missing the point. It isn't like the nations formed a Super PAC and then funneled money to help campaigns in order to get something in return. Because that would have been completely different somehow.

To me, the game itself is ridicuous, injury prone, and childish, not unlike good old American Football. Let's see some action on Ferguson and Baltimore, and our own damned town. This suit is about bribing officials of the stupid game, not about buying a victory in the stupid game. The game is capitalism anyway you slice it...empty headed and cutthroat competitive and completely unimportant in real terms to the average man on the planet.
It looks like they will be playing their games in 120 degree plus conditions. This prosecution is about money.

It's all good and all, but I wonder if the the only reason they are doing it is because russians are involved.
For 20 years they have done nothing, now after russians "won" rights to championship and this ukrainian crap happens they started arresting people. I mean NSA knew it all along, I have no doubts about that.
