It's completely insane. They should have fewer than sixty (one per state, plus a few specialist federal police departments).

Certainly it's not a surprise that the post office has its own force.

The upper class commits crimes because of the certainty that they will get away with the crimes. They can afford the best lawyers. They can also bribe Congress, with political donations, into changing the laws that the upper class gets caught in.

Have you ever wondered why 1000 mainly bankers went to prison after the relatively mild Savings and Loan deregulation delusion fiasco in comparison to the much worse deregulation delusion fiasco when we in the US nearly collapsed the world's entire economy in 2007 and only one banker went to prison?

This was because as its first piece of business the Republican congress swept into office in 1994 repealed the laws that the bankers had been convicted under after the Savings and Loan scandal. Then SCOTUS cemented this exemption from the threat of the inconvenience of arrest and prosecution for a large number of the upper class when it ruled that a corporation is a person who is responsible for their own bad behavior and that it is not the executives who made the decisions that caused the corporate bad behavior who are responsible for that behavior. Then they ruled that money is free speech and therefore the rich have much more free speech and influence than anyone else.

Steve Bannon's Former Accused Co-Conspirators Will Plead Guilty in 'We Build the Wall' Case, Prosecutors Reveal

Two of Steve Bannon's erstwhile co-conspirators will plead guilty to certain charges in the We Build the Wall case, prosecutors revealed on Friday.

Now, two of the three remaining defendants — We Build the Wall’s president Brian Kolfage and Timothy Shea — have signaled plans to “enter pleas of guilty to the certain charges” against them without a trial. Prosecutors said in February that the last, Andrew Badolato, was in the “final stages” of negotiations with the government, and they do not expect a trial to be necessary. If the three men’s plans hold, those developments would render “unnecessary the trial presently scheduled for May 16, 2022,” according to the government’s filing.

The fraud was pretty brazen.

In August 2020, federal prosecutors charged Kolfage, Bannon, Badolato, and Shea with conspiring to defraud We Build the Wall’s donors. We Build the Wall allegedly promised that every penny raised would go to construction, but prosecutors said Bannon pocketed $1 million. Kolfage took $350,000 plus went on a spending spree to buy a Jupiter Marine yacht called the Warfighter, a Range Rover SUV, a golf cart, jewelry, and cosmetic surgery, according to the indictment.
