Fuck You YouTube

So you think YouTube should become a conduit for ISIS to release propaganda?

So you think YouTube should become a conduit for ISIS to release propaganda?

Do you want to know what's going on out there in the wider world or don't you? This display of crazy anger against cultures thousands of years ago is really awful to watch and appears totally mindless. It is also a demonstration of this group's lack of good sense. This video is offensive to me, but I take no offense with the people bringing me the news and letting me know this is happening.

I feel these ISIS people are profoundly wrong headed, but there are reasons they came to this agitated state. It is totally meaningless these acts against statues. In our culture we call this activity vandalism. To art historians it must be disheartening.

This could be a HUGE complicated discussion. I just wanted to watch the video.

Anyhow, my thoughts without thinking too much:

1) They are a private company they can do anything they want.

2) They are so big they have some kind of public duty not to get involved in censorship.

2) They are so big they have some kind of public duty not to get involved in censorship.
I read an article recently about youtube barely making a profit and steps google will be taking to improve the bottom line. It occurred to me that youtube has become such an incredible cultural resource I would support a government mandated site that simply stores all videos ever made with no restrictions or censorship.

I can view the video in the OP link. Shows it's from the Guardian, I think. Have they source it from elsewhere?

BTW, if it is a Guardian (or some other news source) video, then YouTube might have pulled it due to potential or real copyright issues, not content issues, under their TOS.

I like that idea 50%. I figure if the government had ownership it would be a honey pot of lawsuits seeking censorship. If everyone had asymmetric broadband, some smart women could make a distributed system that everyone and no one owns.

He raises a valid point.

ISIS is doing this for propaganda reasons, and so showing these images to the world is exactly what ISIS wants.

I already knew they were doing this.

And oddly enough, this is some of the least destructive stuff they've been doing and makes for good propaganda to show who is in charge making their own history.

The OP told Google to fuck off for taking the video from YouTube. Is Google required to show propaganda for ISIS?

ISIS isn't in an agitated state. Everything they are doing is calculated. They are monsters that want to create a world in their own image, a world where they have the control, where they are the puppet masters. They are playing god on a lower and more local scale that the US and global players like to play, but they don't mind being so barbaric in their slaughters and destruction.

This thread appears to me to be much ado about nothing. I go to YouTube and search for "ISIS destroying shrines". I get several hits for it. See, e.g.:

See my post above...I'm betting that the reason the link to the particular video was pulled was other than Google YouTube content censorship - namely, copyright concerns. Again, the NPR page now links to another version of the video, sourced from the Guardian. And there are other versions of the video available on YouTube.

That should read symmetric. We have asymmetric.
