Useful animation. More convincing than that this is a record high start this year is the reliable upward trend over time, and the non-linear acceleration in the rate of increase, which is what is predicted by and thus supports the same theoretical assumptions used to project the future.
From 1880 to 1930 there is little upward trend, then a .5 degree increase from 1930 to 1970s, then a 1 degree increase since the 1970s. So, the rate of increase in the last 40 years is double that of the prior 40 years.
Also, important is the global heat map showing that the global avg isn't just rising because a few areas are rising in the extreme, but rather than all but a few areas are warmer now than the 130 year average.
