English is complicated
It's bad enough that we have to suffer the likes of Bernie and his Bros, AOC, and her mouth-foaming followers.
Now we have spoiled rich kids pushing the socialist agenda!

Unlike Most Millennials, Norway’s Are Rich

I bet they're only rich because of everything they stole from poor white-trash trumpsuckers.

1. Norway is not socialist
2. Much of Norway's wealth is due to high per-capita oil production. They are certainly not keeping it in the ground!

Not in Norway!

1. Norway is not socialist

Ok then, whatever you say. Public education, reduced wealth gap and UHC (plus an intact modern infrastructure) are all the "socialist" outdomes one could hope for from a Bernie agenda. Norway has that so it's a good enough example of what you fear so deeply. Or is it just the word "socialism" that triggers you?"

I am not being triggered. I just think that words have meanings and those meanings matter. "Capitalism with higher level of public services than US" is not a definition of socialism.
Also, one of the outcomes one can hope from the 2020 Bernie agenda is shutting down fossil fuel projects. Norway would not be down with that.

Righty-o, it's the word then...

Wood and watermills provided needed energy in the 18th century, whale oil and coal did it in the 19th. Oil, natural gas, hydroelectric plants, and nuclear power plants provided the bulk of the needed energy in the 20th. There's no reason for us to stop developing better, cleaner, and more efficient sources of energy in the 21st century, Chicken Little-ism notwithstanding.

What is Democratic socialism?

''Since the term is often misunderstood, it's simplest to start with what Democratic socialism isn't: It is not a political party. It's also not completely interchangeable with the beliefs and practices of socialism.

According to Mark A. Peterson, a professor of public policy, political science, and law at UCLA, Democratic socialism is "a call for the democratically-elected to use the public sector to promote greater equality and opportunity." Those who identify as Democratic socialists believe in giving everyone the chance to find equal economic footing, and see free or low-cost health care, tuition-free public education, and universal child care as means to that end.

"Democratic socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few," the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) website states. The DSA stands for restructuring our government and the U.S. economy "so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives."

Doesn’t socialism mean that the government will own and run everything?

''Democratic socialists do not want to create an all-powerful government bureaucracy. But we do not want big corporate bureaucracies to control our society either. Rather, we believe that social and economic decisions should be made by those whom they most affect.

Today, corporate executives who answer only to themselves and a few wealthy stockholders make basic economic decisions affecting millions of people. Resources are used to make money for capitalists rather than to meet human needs. We believe that the workers and consumers who are affected by economic institutions should own and control them.

Social ownership could take many forms, such as worker-owned cooperatives or publicly owned enterprises managed by workers and consumer representatives. Democratic socialists favor as much decentralization as possible. While the large concentrations of capital in industries such as energy and steel may necessitate some form of state ownership, many consumer-goods industries might be best run as cooperatives.

Democratic socialists have long rejected the belief that the whole economy should be centrally planned. While we believe that democratic planning can shape major social investments like mass transit, housing, and energy, market mechanisms are needed to determine the demand for many consumer goods.''

Too late. The Scary version of the word got out of the barn. It was OK when it was just being a good neighbor to work together for social benefit.

But, when the fear mongers merged 'taking over industries' with 'community services[ the notion of socialism was weaponized. Now they've added prayer and belief in Gawad to their evil concoction and now socialism is anti-christian and anti-business.

For christ sake we should make education a for profit thing and prisons a for profit thing and police service a for profit thing and fire protection service a for profit thing and libraries a for profit thing and even government a for profit thing. And water service and waste service and science and religion .... Then the 'we made it ourselves' gang can claim they did everything.

When did Norway collectivize the means of production? Last time I checked just a few days ago that had not happened. I just looked at Drudge and there was no breaking news about it.

Read the thread, Jason. I apologize for using the word "socialists" in the OP title, now that I've seen how it triggers y'all. AF nailed it:

Buddy: I hate to point out the obvious, but we can barely convince a majority of Americans to accept evolution, Big Bang cosmology, and climate change! You want them all to understand perfectly the difference between socialism and social democracy?

AF did not nail it because in the last panel the person who said socialism refers to collective ownership of the means of production then used socialism to refer to a safety net welfare system. I do not ever refer to a safety net welfare system as socialism, even when arguing against it.

If you think people are triggered by your misuse of the word, I suppose you think that parents and teachers are constantly triggered by kids using the wrong word in many many situations. After all, that is what people are responding to - correct linguistics. If you don't want to use English language definitions, that's up to you, but pretending you are speaking English when you are not does not add anything to the conversation.

So, what language ARE you using since it is not English?

He's pointing out the right wing authoritarian lie and favorite talking point that anything but unfettered steal-from-the-poor-to-feed-the-rich capitalism is evil SOCIALIZMZ.

Is English not your first language? Or are you simply deaf to the hypocrisy of the alt-right scaremongerers?

I see the problem. Because I am a staunch advocate of the free market, you managed to convince yourself that I am somehow on the right. It's not true, and adds to your other abuses of the English language. Nice use of "I know you are but what am I".

I think the actual problem is that you're refusing to accept the joke for what it is. I am not saying you should think it is funny or on point, but rather simply accept what is actually being said.

No one said you were on the right in this thread, but the thread title does seem to be a tongue-in-cheek poke at the subset of people (alt-right, I guess) who throw 'socialism' around as a bogeyman against any policy or economic system they don't want to give consideration.

With significant state ownership and welfare programs, Norway represents a country which gets written off as 'socialist' in this manner.

For the record, I don't believe the OP was earnestly saying all of the young people in Norway are actually 'spoiled rich kids' either.

It's a sad day when you have to spell it out ... but thanks - I guess.

The right redefined Socialism to mean any program promoted by democrats. And I mean any program. It's a very effective method to move fence sitters to the right. It's beyond my comprehension to understand why some on the left allow the right to continue promoting this garbage.
