-- in May for three full days on the ground. One day, I'm going to the Zoo, because I have literally wanted to go there for over 30 years. Another day, I'm going to devote to nature.

Anyone have any suggestions for the third day?

The zoo is definitely a lot of fun! So is the wildlife safari park up in Escondido, which they also own. Skip Seaworld if you love animals. I spent my honeymoon in San Diego and it was very memorable. Definitely a good food town.

One of my favorite things to do when I lived there was an early Sunday morning drive along the coast. Anywhere from The Strand, through Coronado, across the bridge, Point Loma (Cabrillo National Monument), La Jolla, etc. It's all good and best enjoyed with as little traffic to concentrate on as possible. A little red convertible helps too.
You might have to make due with a Wednesday afternoon and whatever Enterprise saw fit to rent to you but the scenery is just as beautiful.

If you are into Naval history there is the Museum ship USS Midway WWII aircraft carrier later converted with an angled flight deck.

I have never been but If I was in San Diego It's where I would go.

There is also Liberty Station Park with submarine memorials. Lots of Naval history in San Diego.

Since I have not been I don't know how authentic it is.
I hope that they have not done to the Midway what NYC did to the USS Intrepid. The Intrepid has been totally bastardized with all authenticity remove.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Convertibles ain't my thing, but I'll take a look at the rest.

I go to San Diego regularly, will be there next month for a couple of days. I went to the zoo once years ago but it's huge and there is a lot of walking and never been back, it's a one and done. San Diego is surprisingly easy to get around by car most of the time. There is the Gaslamp Quarter to visit, get a picture of Greyfriars Bobby. Old Town is ok, nothing super interesting but worth wondering around and there are plenty good restaurants there too. Don't be fooled by the long lines at Cafe Coyote, it's very popular but I thought the food was so-so. Fred's is better in my opinion. Miguel's has great fish tacos. In May the weather may not be "beach weather" but Mission Beach is worth a look and hanging out at. Little Italy is cool. There are great restaurants all over the place, you can't miss. San Diego Padres may be playing and their tickets are usually quite reasonable but that takes a chunk of time. La Jolla is nice, you can see the seals there but they do stink.
