Goodyear goes Woke, cops backlash, walks it back

Once again using "Woke" as a dubious synonym for anything left of the political center.

It is a term those on the far left, particularly #BLM extremists, came up with to describe themselves because they like to pretend they are somehow more enlightened than the rest of us. Reality - their heads are so far up their own asses, they haven't seen daylight since 2014!

That is totally not how that word evolved.

For those interested, it started out as a phrase that reminded black youth to keep their eyes open about their surroundings to stay safe. “Stay woke” about whether you’ve entered a white neighborhood that could get you brutalized by cops. “Stay woke” about the dangers around you.

Seriously, politics and work place? That isn't woke. That is typical.

No. The injunction on expressing support for particular political candidates or parties via attire I can well agree with. But the chosen example was evidently anti-Trump.

But there was also an injunction against expressing support for the police--until head office walked it back.

By the way, now Amazon has pulled "Joe and the Hoe" merchandise. But offensive merchandise about Trump? Totally allowed!
If you think merchandise making fun of Trump is ok, but merchandise making fun of Joe and Kamala is not, how do you justify that?

Amazon is a business, they sell things that make money, and avoid selling things that they think will harm their brand and make them lose money. That's how a capitalist would justify that, aren't you a capitalist?

I can't help but to commend you and others here for your laser-like focus on the most critical political problems that we face today. In daily, repeated threads you and others are pointing out the tremendous injustices by numerous conspiracies being inflicted on white, conservative men, detailing the grinding down of their civil rights in order to advance the privileges of "those people."

Thank God in heaven above that you have your priorities straight unlike those here needlessly worrying about a pandemic, an economic depression, the hoax of systemic racism, and the hoax of creeping authoritarianism undermining our democracy, which was never meant to be a democracy, read your Constitution!

It's an honour to serve.

So, forbidding expression of police support isn't a Woke position?

Some Pride parades have forbidden the marching of police officers in uniform. That's a Woke position. Hating the police is a Woke position. That's why the Woke want to defund and/or abolish the police.

Aye, it's the new "liberal", which was the new "radical", which was the new "anarchist", which was the new "heathen", etc, etc. Call people what you like, I suppose, but don't expect them to be afraid of a label which has lost all meaning due to overuse.

Yes, labels like "racist", "transphobe", "misogynist", all the other isms and phobes, have completely lost meaning.

I have to say, I am against my employer telling me what I can and can't wear on my t-shirt. If t-shirts with messages are allowed in my workplace, I damn well better be able put any message I want on it so long as it is not offensive. I am glad I work in a place where my well respected colleague can wear his MAGA hat, and I can wear my pride shirt.

Depends on why it was taken down. Amazon may take a harder line on content perceived as misogynistic, homophobic, racist (etc.) than content that is merely mocking. What items not calling Harris a whore (or similar epithet) have also been taken down? What comparable items to 'Joe and Ho(e)' mocking Trump have been left up? Have you tried filing a complaint about those items to see if they get removed eventually?

At a quick search, I'm finding shirts which say 'Biden for nursing home 2020', 'Joe Biden touched me', a face mask that says 'Fuck Biden'. There is more. Unsurprisingly, I find more for Trump, but he's already been in office for four years, and the man is, through and through, a piece of shit, so no doubt he's the bigger target. I still find some anti-Obama stuff up for those who haven't gotten over that.

Amazon is a massive fucking retailer. It's unlikely they filter items for sale as thoroughly as many retailers who have dedicated buying teams curating product selection. If I had to guess, they have some level of screening process and automated filters which can catch certain issues, but their push is to be permissive in allowing people to sell through their retail portal, and respond to suspicious activity (in the case of various forms of fraud) and reports from shoppers/ browsers retroactively. If something flies under the radar and doesn't get reported, it stays.

Do a little investigation before crying on the forums.

Well now it has been usurped by reactionaries to denigrate any person or position that involves change that frightens or annoys them.

Since Mr. Trump has spent his term whining about and criticizing the owner of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, I suspect this is simply turnabout is fair play.

No. There are many positions that involve change that could frighten or annoy me that has nothing to do with "Wokeness". I'm annoyed that my local council changed the way it calculated land tax for apartments compared with houses, but the change wasn't Woke or anything like it.

I thought The Woke were SJWs who aren't into fighting. Like the people who go to street protests on hot days and hand out water bottles. They're supportive of the goals of the genuine social justice warriors, but they're not going to get into a fistfight with the Proud Boys.

You're talking to someone who unironically claims "republican is party of Lincoln, Democrats started the KKK" without acknowledging the entire century of history between now and then. Democrats usurped social responsibility and equality, republicans usurped racism, assholes usurped "woke", "Xir", clowns, and frogs.

But belief is a hell of a drug, especially when the person believes that their beliefs aren't beliefs because they didn't come from a sermons, a preacher, or a Bible.

*Which are absolutely not what Fox News and Hannity, and Breitbart, oh no (/s)

It's like they're trying to make it into a pejorative for anyone who actually looks at reality and acts accordingly and with concern for the society of people rather than some tribal subset thereof.
"Woke" people and the "cancel culture" they pioneered where 100% loyalty to the leftist agenda is demanded are the most tribal subset of the society today. They have nothing to do with "looking at reality".

Whenever I see someone use that concept pejoratively, I just shake my head and write them off: They have clearly decided to not be within the society of people.
Case in point. Anybody who dares criticize the "wokesters" gets literally dehumanized by "woke" left wing extremists like you.

You dehumanize yourself with your racist nonsense.

That you're incapable of differentiating a trademarked campaign slogan and a statement about civil rights is your own problem, but the comparable situation would be Goodyear banning MAGA hats but allowing Biden merch and you and your racist ilk won't be able to point to such a thing because their policy is written to not allow political gear. The simple thought experiment would be: do anti-slavery shirts become political merchandise if the Republican party started advocating a pro-slavery plank in their platform and the obvious answer is that they're politically neutral statements. That the Republicans have aligned themselves against BLM doesn't make it equivalent to MAGA gear.

It takes a mighty peculiar form of retardation to flail about Marxism and to try to dictate to a private company what their policies should be.

Cancel culture my ass - the RepubConservRacist idiots have been calling for cancelling of anything and everything from as far back as I can remember.

I'll ask for any jurisprudence that protects political campaigning at work or that deems idiot racist as a protected class. I don't expect it because, well, nothing like that actually exists.

You actually don't even have to acknowledge that. Simply looking at which side is wearing the crooked crosses now, and who David Duke is advocating for is enough for anyone with two neurons to rub together to understand right and wrong now.

Indeed, the sophism is apparent even to him. He doesn't actually believe that.

I second this. With all the coddling of blacks, unemployed, etc. we see in this liberal echo chamber, it's good to focus on the real victims.

Another oppressed group is billionaires. While their tax rate may seem low as a percentage, their tax burden is huge in absolute terms, millions of dollars more than the paltry taxes paid by those to whom liberals pander. And now AOC and the other Commies propose a wealth tax? Billionaires will be reluctant to have children knowing what a handicap their heirs will start life with.

#BLM is an extremist, racist, Marxist ideology that is as far from "middle of the road" as MAGA, if not more so.
The marching cry "Black Lives Matter" really does ask for too much. I watched a YouTube where even a Black suggested this be toned down to "Black Lives Exist." I think that slogan might be acceptable — what do you think, Derec?

One can focus on more than one issue. When people can lose their jobs for criticizing #BLM or posting mildly offensive memes about Kamala Harris (as if far more offensive memes are not being posted daily about Trump with nobody getting fired!), those are also a civil rights issues. Civil rights should not only be for so-called minorities or those with politically correct views.

I note nothing in that article that says more than they violated selling guidelines. How did they violate the guidelines? The lack of any information in that regard makes me think the reporters know the truth but don't want to say it.

Most of the "news" on this seems to be basically the same article but CNN has more--apparently they have pulled other merchandise for racial slurs.

And when you think about it, many of those people to whom liberals pander only make any money at all because they're paid by those billionaires. Without the benevolent wealthy elite raining down cash on the masses, what taxes we do collect from minimum wage scrubs would vanish with the mass exodus of job creators fleeing for more merciful shores.
