Reminds me of the claim "an armed society is a polite society"...

yea, it is a politeness born out of fear. The fear that anyone you interact with could be a total psychopath, ready to kill at the slightest provocation, so you act polite so as not to trigger them. Of course, since many of the gun culture advocates are also anti-political correctness... want to speak their mind no matter how much it offends others... how is that supposed to work?

Humouring a dangerous mental patient might look from a distance like politeness, but it's really not the same thing, any more than rape is the same thing as making love, regardless of the possibility that a distant observer might not be able to spot the difference.

An armed society is a terrorised society. Politeness, like love and respect, is not something a person can be forced into.

A lot of politeness is already born out of fear.

No, it's not. If it is born out of fear, it's not politeness, even if it looks a lot like politeness to an ignorant observer.

It's about the action, not the motivation.

I want to say 'You couldn't be more wrong', but I am worried that you might see it as a challenge.

Definition of polite
Having or showing behaviour that is respectful and considerate of other people.
In other words, as long as you act considerate of others, it doesn't matter if you hate their guts and curse them under your breath, you are still being polite. People can't read your mind, they know you are polite by your actions.

Please explain why you think otherwise.

Because politeness is a character trait, and actions taken under duress are not indicative of a person's character.
