Trump gives America's 'poorest white town' hope

This article was fascinating. It describes the beliefs of people in this small town that they are entitled to have jobs brought to them. That they do not need to make jobs or ever move for a job, but that a President should fund a company so that a job can be delivered to their doorstep.

That they hate the direct welfare they've been given and what they really want is a big millionaire CEO to be given the welfare and then make them work for a dribble of it.

"Donald Trump's got all the money he'll ever need," says Steve Mays, judge-executive for the county and life-long Beattyville resident. The 49-year-old says he's never been more excited about a president than he is now. "Trump will be a president for the common man."

He doesn't have all the money he'll ever _want_ though, and that's why he is _not_ for the common man.

If we're going to do corporate welfare, can't we try giving it to the very smallest corporations and entrepreneurs? Micro loans to home businesses?

Fascinating, and sad.

"I believe he wants to take care of us, the little people," says Coomer, the gas station manager. "I think he's going to quit giving money to all these other countries and take care of America. I truly do."

Trump didn't get rich by taking care of the little people, and these people aren't out of work because of Obama or spending on foreign aid. They're out of work because the coal industry is dying, and nothing that Trump can do will bring it back.

nothing that Trump can do will bring it back.

Tru 'nuff. But it would help if he could fucking READ!

I mean obviously he knows how to read, he's just in a state of mental atrophy and chooses not to if he can at all help it.

Donald Trump is like a Hutt from Star Wars. Their entire life goal is to build up a big syndicate business and then live off of it in their twilight years in a state of constant debauchery and excess.

Uh... I suggest you watch the video. I'll bet dollars to donuts that given a dime store romance novel and a week to read it, he couldn't pass a book report test.

The man speaks off a teleprompter. He has to be able to decipher meaning from a collection of symbols that form words that form sentences for that to be possible. A book report doesn't really measure your ability to do this. It's more a test of your observational and critical thinking skills.

I'm more and more of the opinion that conservatism is fundamentally the worship of authority and the belief in the inherent righteousness of power. This is just the latest point that demonstrates this, but there are others. The conervolibertarians in this board instinctively felating the police is a BIG clue. It also runs through strains of libertarian thought: it's not that they want to be free from government oppression so much as they want people other than the government (themselves, maybe?) to have a chance to become powerful too and therefore righteous.

Most people have very little experience with anyone in a position of real power and authority, and what little experience they do have tends to be positive. So where "regular" person will tend to be flawed, greedy, hurtful and petty, an authority figure will be assumed to be virtuous, wise, generous and patient.

"You're an asshole, and you're not in charge. He's in charge, therefore he must not be an asshole."

If we're going to do corporate welfare, can't we try giving it to the very smallest corporations and entrepreneurs? Micro loans to home businesses?

No, because home businesses are too "regular" for that. Too many people who run small/home businesses have been a dick to Joe The Plumber, so Joe the Plumber says "fuck you, small business owners!" and wants that money going to somebody like Wells Fargo or Walmart, whose managers have always been polite to him.

WATCH THE VIDEO!! No, he doesn't. He picks up a few words from it, can't keep up and starts ad-libbing. Really - watch it,, it's horrifying.

He has to be able to decipher meaning from a collection of symbols that form words that form sentences for that to be possible.

Given enough time to sound things out, and someone to correct him if he thinks "unpresidented" means "unprecedented" and stuff like that, I'm pretty sure he could wade through a page of text in a an hour or few. I could maybe grant that he's semi-literate. But barely.

Eugh David Pakman. He's grown increasingly petty and petulant over the last month or two. Not a fan.

I will grant you that Trump may not be a particularly strong reader, and may seek to not have to read if he can at all help it. But come on now, the man has a basic level of literacy. Whether or not that is sufficient for the office of president, Well....

"Basic" as in "first grade level"... maybe. TOTALLY inadequate for anyone at any level of government.
He never had any experience at any level of government because he was never qualified - he could not have passed the written test administered to our local dog-catchers.

I don't think it's fair to paint these folks with the same conservative brush. Most of these people live and die in these podunk towns with minimal contact to the outside world. Their opinions are are reinforced by the same small group of people over and over. It's intellectual incest.

Calm yourself. The choir's ears are bleeding. :p

Sorry... a little over-amped. Teh STOOPID - it should hurt more. That's all.

It's very sad that so many of these poor, uneducated folks were so easily manipulated by Trump. People in small towns often get very attached to their communities and they have a hard time understanding that things aren't going to change. They have false hopes for something that's never coming back. There is no savior for them, if they could only come to terms with that.

On the other hand, a lot of doctors and dentists, like my very affluent brother in law, also voted for Trump because they want that big tax break that he's been promising. Those voters might just get what they want, while the poor folks keep turning to heroin to escape their harsh reality.

I think it is the triumph of hope over experience. These people feel left behind and Trump gave them a hopeful vision.

Frankly, I certainly hope President Trump can deliver on his promises of hope to these supporters in a manner that does not destroy the social and legal fabric of the U.S. I doubt it will happen, but that doesn't mean I cannot hope for the best while expecting the very worst.

I think it's pertinent what the second fellow said, that it wouldn't be a problem if he was curious. If he listened to books on tape, if he got his advisors to explain things in detail for him. But he doesn't even care about that.

In all fairness, it looks like he uses reading glasses, at least he is using them in this video...He can read...

That would make a far better campaign slogan for 2020 than his silly "Keep America Great".

Donald Trump 2020 - He Can Read!

Great slogan! But are you sure he can read? Check for earpieces - I think those glasses have a tiny camera that allows Stevie B to see what Cheato's face is pointed at, and he relays it to Cheato via the earpiece.

I ponder whether this has more to do with vanity.
