Instagram - what do you know?

Talk to me about instagram.

It turns out someone has created an instagtram account with my (minor) son's name and his picture. It has 9 followers, 45 following and about a half dozen posts. None are bad, all are from people who do know him (and who we know). Not close friends, but acquaintances from school and sport.

But how does that work. What thoughts does this evoke? Curiosity reigns.

It isn't uncommon. Assuming it wasn't actually your son who created the account, you can report it.

I would like to know who created the account and what their interest might be. I assume this is a girl, right?

No, it's a boy. It's possible, we conjecture, that it was created so that someone could follow stufff without being known to follow - perhaps by parents? The account is following 44 things. But I can't see what it is following.

I did write a report to instagram and asked them to delete the account. My son has an extremely unusual name in America so any buddy browsing for him would be certain to find it. And likewise if someone was looking to make a nondescript anonymous account, this was a bad choice.
