With this news, plus Paris, plus the Russian jet downing, I say we have no choice. ISIS is a state actor at this point. It's pointless to refuse to acknowledge that basic truth. And it is time for a full scale war against it. The thought of Chemical weapons in the hands of these people is beyond the pale. They must be defeated. Invade it. Conquer that territory and turn it into a Sunni but peace loving state - like Japan or Germany after WWII. We could do it, but we just have to commit ourselves to it. Might take about 500,000 troops, but with Europe and the U.S. acting together it could be done. Maybe a lot less than that. Better now than after they have chemical weapons. I say we have to move fast. Chemical weapons aren't too hard to develop. They may not have them now, but give them a year or even six months. I wouldn't underestimate these fucktards anymore. The bombing campaign is not working, and ultimately will not work. The local armies do not have the wherewithal to go in there. Only a united US Europe and even Russian group can - under UN auspices. We can rebuild later. At this point the threat is imply too great.

PS: And yes, I'll be happy to go again if called; although they told me I'm too old. I'm still subject to recall.

I think we should send them an invitation to meet us on that field where the apocalyptic battle versus the Romans is supposed to take place and settle this thing one way or the other.

If they don't show we can call them a bunch of pussies who have no faith in their god.

Couldn't we just do a cultural exchange with them? You know, host their ballet at the Met. Stuff like that. That should ease tensions.

Of course they are looking to develop chemical weapons, it's no news.
And bombing is starting to work now. They just need to double or triple it again.
And they need to bomb oil they sell to Turkey and other border countries.

I stand corrected. Though I wonder how well their women could perform Swan Lake in a full burqa? I doubt our female ballet stars would be much of a hit over there in their tutus.

Sorry. It's the myth of air power advocates. Air power is great and necessary for victory, but it is not sufficient. It's helped to contain them inside their heartland but someone has to go in and kill a large number of their on the ground fighters. Air power alone, unless we just wanted to wipe out every single Sunni in the area via carpet bombing, is just too blunt a force to use.

But when they try, there's a decent chance that someone in the audience would catch a glimpse of her ankles and everyone could be entertained by her beheading, so that's something.

Good point. So, ballet is out as the whole idea is to win over their hearts and minds without anyone getting injured or killed. There's other options like banquets, film festivals and such. Try to think positive and not be such a Negative Nellie.

Also, book clubs are out. My neighborhood club tried that with a Muslim club from another part of town, and the only book they wanted us to read and discuss was the Koran. Every.damn.time. :angryfist:

You forgot about Syrian Army. It's true they are not great but with enough bombing they can take care of the rest.

Bombing worked well against the Guerrilla campaign of the Vietcong.

Seems like the mother of Satan is working very good even thought TATP is very unstable. They must want more reliable bombs.

There will never be a rule book for war...that anybody engaged in war will pay any attention to. At the close of WWII the U.S. dropped atom bombs on the Japanese to test them. This was definitely the case with the plutonium bomb dropped on Nagasaki. It was absolutely unnecessary, but...we were at war and all is fair in war. War is inherently not some noble thing but instead the adoption of criminal attitudes toward designated enemies. War itself is a crime. War strategy is codified criminal attitude. It has never worked to the benefit of the human race, still we cling to it like a toddler clings to its pacifier. So yeah! ISIS is under asymmetric attack and it will get as absolutely terrible as it can in hopes of surviving. But..both side are engaging criminal activity and the French and Americans using airpower is disgraceful in my opinion. I don't condone chemical warfare ever, but as long as there is this suspension of all rules, this thing called war, we will be seeing things like this happening.

Why would you think that? It was a duplicate of the bomb we'd already tested at Alamogordo in New Mexico.

Yes, if i remember correctly uranium bomb was used in Hiroshima without prior test explosion, because they were 100% sure it would work. Plutonium bomb needed prior testing.

Also only had one uranium bomb, so a test would mean no more uranium bombs.

We tried all this with regime change but ISIS and others of its ilk filled the vacuum after the collapse of the deposed regimes armies.

Dropping the bomb was the best course of action at that time. Any other course of action (including doing nothing) would have resulted in more dead on every side.

Yes and no--they were sure of the physics of the bomb but they knew there was a chance for the bomb to fizzle. At the time they didn't have the computing power to figure out the odds of this--later analysis has shown it was in the ballpark of 1%. (This is why current weapons are normally implosion designs even if they are U-235 based. The implosion design is far more resistant to a fizzle, it makes a U-235 bomb more reliable, a Pu-239 gun-type bomb has a very high chance of being a fizzle, that's why they are never built.)

I think the more serious issue than the 1% chance of failure is that the gun design needs about twice as much U-235 to sustain a chain reaction as the implosion design needs.
