I'm sure Derec can reassure us as to why this OK....

Ever since becoming Italy’s first black government minister, Cécile Kyenge has faced a shocking barrage of abuse from politicians in the far-right Lega party, including being publicly compared to an orangutan.
Now Lega, currently the most popular party in Italy, is suing Kyenge for defamation over accusing the party of racism.

In response, Kyenge said that Lega’s racism is self-evident — and that she intends to waive her legal immunity as a politician to defend the case to put the party’s racism on the stand.
Lega made two previous attempts to launch defamation suits against Kyenge.

It says she intends to waive her legal immunity as a politician because their racism is obvious to everyone (good for her). But why is that a thing? Politicians should not have immunity from slander laws if such laws exist and apply to other citizens.

I'm not sure why this is shocking. Italy and most of Europe is incredibly racist, especially compared to the USA.

For fuck's sake, Italians throw bananas at black soccer players.

It's shocking in and of itself. The country is immaterial.

And soccer is a vile game with anthropoid fans.

One is shocked at events that are unexpected. If you are shocked that the Nazis used anti-Semitic language, then you are merely uniformed or naive. Because that wouldn't be shocking.

In this day and age, without such an immunity, a politician might have to spend all of his/her time and resources defending against partisan-driven baseless lawsuits and have his/her good name dragged through the mud.

Meh. Cheato spends most of his time that way anyhow.

Okay, folks. A good topic here. Keep away from the personal stuff and all will be well.

I did not know that. I always thought the Europeans were always thought of as cultured and enlightened. At least compared to the confederate south.

Sadly, not in he case of soccer fans. They are violent thugs. They have been known to throw urine and coins at non-white players, and even at street urchins (usually migrants) to provoke a fight.

Actually - it's not restricted to soccer - it's everywhere.

The Europeans Americans tend to meet tend to be pretty cultured because they are the sort who have the means and inclination to travel to the United States.

And of course, like in the United States, it depends on the region. What I said doesn't apply to London and Amsterdam, and it is particularly bad in Italy, but I will maintain that as a whole, Europe is more racist and insular than the United States.

By a long shot.
