John McCain dead at 81

No, I liked him even before everything became about 45. Had principles and stuck with them, and I appreciate that in a person even if I disagreed with a lot of those principles and opposed many of his projects. At least, with McCain, you felt like the other side was arguing in good faith, not holding up false positions or wading in double-speak.

He was one of the 'honorable opposition'. Although I thought his opinions and policies were often badly mistaken, I was sure *he* thought they were best for the nation.
Was. After 2000, McCain's Maverick streak took a bit of a hiatus, only appearing here and there for a couple decades. It took a fool like Trump for McCain to appear like a Maverick again.

All his talk about getting along between parties felt awfully shallow. I don't recall him stepping out of a Filibuster when Obama was President... ever. His bipartisan fires are over stated and he was very much part of the problem at times ('09-'16).

McCain indeed did serve his nation, and endured some seriously awful interment during Vietnam. He did have a tendency to sometimes work professionally on both sides of the aisle, both in Legislation and Scandal. And he did oddly enough save ACA in one or two votes, but it never seemed to be out of principles that he did that.

McCain's legacy is definitely mixed., but his death should certainly not be rendered in memory of Tweets only.

The clip of McCain telling that idiotic hate-filled woman in his crowd that no, Obama isn't a Muslim, he's a good man that I disagree with, should be run juxtaposed with any of Helsinki Don's Birther pronouncements. If we don't flip the House in November, we deserve what we get.

Yeah, that was a very honorable thing for McCain to say about Obama, but the one thing that he missed is that he didn't correct the woman about how being Arab is not a pejorative. I'm sure it was just an oversight on his part, but by not addressing that it does seem like McCain implicity equates being an Arab with being a bad guy.

All one has to do is to juxtapose McCain's response to that idiot woman, to Trump's response to the idiot woman complaining about a TSA agent wearing a "hibby-jabby":
"We're looking into that, We're looking into a lot of things" quoth the moron.

Being a Muslim, not an Arab.

Being a Muslim, not an Arab.

So....Why was he publicly seen fraternizing with a shipload of Muslim Arabs around a lighted orb?

Just asking for a friend.

Even though I disagreed with him vehemently on foreign policy "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran", I hope he finally finds some peace. As someone who once wore a uniform as well, I respected some of what he had done.

I do think it is ironic that there is a medicine that has shown remarkable effectiveness against cancer and could maybe have saved his life, and he fought to keep it schedule one and opposed all legalization efforts including state-level efforts.

That sounds conspiracy-ish. Are you sure it is true?

This is pretty vile, if accurate:

Trump rejected plans for a White House statement praising McCain

President Trump nixed issuing a statement that praised the heroism and life of Sen. John McCain, telling senior aides he preferred to issue a tweet before posting one Saturday night that did not include any kind words for the late Arizona Republican.

*snip*

...Trump told aides he wanted to post a brief tweet instead, and the statement praising McCain’s life was not released.

I have no trouble believing Trump did/said that. He is beyond vile.

OTOH, I do not believe for a New York second he personally wrote the bland tweet that did finally go out.

It's no conspiracy, it's public knowledge that he has consistently opposed medical marijuana.

Personally, I do not oppose medical marijuana even for recreational use, but your claim is that medical marijuana could have saved his life. Whether or not marijuana can make a person comfortable is a different question than whether it can cure cancer outright. Also, whether it can diminish cancer in minor ways prolonging a person's life slightly is a different question. So you're seriously saying he could live a normal life up to dying naturally if he smoked pot medicinally. That does seem a little bit out here and I think you should make a thread about your claim in the science forum. Maybe you're right but it sounds sketchy.

There is evidence that medicinal marijuana can not only ease cancer symptoms but might even be able to treat certain cancers. It is hard to get the evidence considering that the federal government refuses to acknowledge any evidence on this topic. It has already been determined by the DEA that marijuana has no medicinal use, so studies that show otherwise aren't included in the DEA analysis of the drug.

Apparently, Trump suddenly realized how unpopular his behavior towards McCain has become. He is sending representatives to the funeral and has now ordered flags to be at half mast until the funeral.

White House Returns Flag to Half-Staff for John McCain, as the Senator Gets a Last Word

Speaking in a posthumous statement delivered through a top aide, Mr. McCain issued a pointed rebuttal of Trump-era politics, although he never mentioned the president by name.

“We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe,” Mr. McCain wrote in a statement delivered by Rick Davis, his family spokesman and former campaign manager. “We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been.”

In his statement, Mr. McCain, one of a few Republicans in Congress who pushed back against Mr. Trump and publicly criticized his style of leadership, alluded to “blood and soil,” a German nationalist slogan dating to the 19th Century that has been resurrected by the alt-right and white nationalist movement in the United States.

“We are citizens of the world’s greatest republic, a nation of ideals, not blood and soil,” Mr. McCain wrote.

“Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here,” Mr. McCain wrote to close his letter. “Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history.”

Here's a review from this year. If I recall correctly, most of this research is happening in Spain and Italy.

As for glioma specifically, THC has been show to effect apoptosis in mouse models of glioma. Here again is a recent publication on the subject:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29867351

This research goes back at least a decade, so you can peruse the citations in these recent papers if you actually are interested in the basis for this. At the time I became aware of this research, I seem to recall that the anti-angiogenic properties of THC were the best evidenced at the time, but perusing those papers, it seems that there is pro-apoptosis activity as well.

Marijuana won't cure your cancer, but cannabiniods could be an effective part of a multi-faceted treatement of certain cancers, especially those that do not respond to current drugs.

After looking at link, it seems very possible to me.

I don't know about it saving McCain. Glioblastomas are notoriously deadly and difficult to treat. They are essentially death sentences. Maybe in the future though, an effective treatment will emerge with cannabiniods playing a role.

On a sad note, my high school friend died today from complications following lymphoma. He was 29. I guess McCain knew he had lived a full life, and he seemed to be at peace with his fate. I hope I can be when my time comes.

To make sure, best to smoke a lot of pot. It would be a shame if you came down with something that pot could have prevented, right?

And Indian chemists were able to get gold superconductive at room temperature. Therefore truth!

Glad you're here to defend the DEA, Jimmy. Someone has to I guess.
