Was. After 2000, McCain's Maverick streak took a bit of a hiatus, only appearing here and there for a couple decades. It took a fool like Trump for McCain to appear like a Maverick again. No, I liked him even before everything became about 45. Had principles and stuck with them, and I appreciate that in a person even if I disagreed with a lot of those principles and opposed many of his projects. At least, with McCain, you felt like the other side was arguing in good faith, not holding up false positions or wading in double-speak.
He was one of the 'honorable opposition'. Although I thought his opinions and policies were often badly mistaken, I was sure *he* thought they were best for the nation.
All his talk about getting along between parties felt awfully shallow. I don't recall him stepping out of a Filibuster when Obama was President... ever. His bipartisan fires are over stated and he was very much part of the problem at times ('09-'16).
McCain indeed did serve his nation, and endured some seriously awful interment during Vietnam. He did have a tendency to sometimes work professionally on both sides of the aisle, both in Legislation and Scandal. And he did oddly enough save ACA in one or two votes, but it never seemed to be out of principles that he did that.
McCain's legacy is definitely mixed., but his death should certainly not be rendered in memory of Tweets only.
