Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has died at the age of 81 after a battle with brain cancer.
The prominent senator was described as looking “increasingly frail” after surgery earlier this year for an intestinal infection, and he discontinued medical treatment for cancer Aug. 24.

While no great fan of McCain, it is sad to read this.

Looks like the WH Staff got to Trump's phone first and posted something human.

I live in Arizona, so this guy was my Senator.

I also lost a friend a few years ago to the same cancer. Glioblastoma is a helluva thing. I'm honestly surprised that McCain lasted that long. Then again, he's John McCain.

McCain was a tragic figure of being on the wrong side of issues but thinking he was right. Occasionally, in rare moments he was right and went against the grain. He was a principled person but most often wrong. Someone who followed his beliefs and was willing to compromise. This is fundamentally why he became an enemy of the current wannabe dictator in the Oval Office. McCain's end is also tragic as he couldn't continue his fight against our greatest, recent domestic enemy in the White House, his pain and suffering and his family's pain and suffering made worse by Trump's insults. Without principled people and people willing to compromise, the Republican Party has no meaning, save one--the Party of Trump. The loss of this controversial character is going to be felt for some time in American politics.

President Obama said:
John McCain and i were members of different generations, came from completely different backgrounds, and competed at the highest level of politics. But we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher-the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed. We saw our political battles, even, as a privilege, something noble, an opportunity to serve as stewards of those high ideals at home, and to advance them around the world. We saw this country as a place where anything is possible - and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way.

"Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did. But all of us can aspire to the courage to put the greater good above our own. At John's best, he showed us what that means. And for that, we are all in his debt. Michelle and I send our heartfelt condolences to Cindy and their family.

...and now some comments from what has become the Party of Trump:
Good Bye “Songbird”!

...

I will not say anything as I try not to speak evil of the dead

...

War hero? Sorry - no.

...

RIH

...

John McCain will get no respect, mourning or honor recognition from me...no, RIP...only an introduction to his forever new master, “Satan”, himself. This man was evil from head to toe. He never thought of his country first, only himself. He and Obama are two of a rotten kind. May Satan own them in the hereafter when they arrival there.

I am sorry Lord, Almighty, my Father in Heaven, but these two men and Mitt Romney have caused much damage and pain the the American people in many ways!!!

During the Vietnam War, John McCain was a Navy pilot. The North Vietnamese shot down his plane and captured him, and he spent some 5 1/2 years in the "Hanoi Hilton" prison, where he was often tortured.

Trump attacks McCain: 'I like people who weren't captured' - POLITICO (July 2015):

“He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

...
At a press availability following his remarks, Trump denied saying that McCain isn’t a war hero and said, “If somebody’s a prisoner, I consider them a war hero.”

He also continued his attacks on the Arizona senator, saying, “I think John McCain’s done very little for the veterans. I’m very disappointed in John McCain.

...
In a follow-up statement sent to reporters, Trump again declined to apologize, calling McCain “yet another all talk, no action politician who spends too much time on television and not enough time doing his job.”

For his part,
Trump received four student deferments from military service between 1964 and 1968. In Ames, he told reporters another medical deferment he received after graduating was for a bone spur in his foot. When asked which foot, Trump told reporters to look up the records.
What a chicken hawk. At least John McCain served -- and suffered terribly from his service.

RIP John McCain

"It's been quite a ride. I've known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war, and helped make peace," McCain wrote. "I've lived very well and I've been deprived of all comforts. I've been as lonely as a person can be and I've enjoyed the company of heroes. I've suffered the deepest despair and experienced the highest exultation.

"I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times."

As they say, "Godspeed, John McCain!"

Don2's opening paragraph is a close summary of my views.

While I mostly or almost always disagreed with McCain, early on his stances appeared reasoned and sincere. Unlike many high prophile Republinans, he appreared to be mainly sane and not evil.

However in more recent years when he had greater political aspirations I had questioned his motives, particularly bringing Sarah Palin out of obscurity and unleashing her insanity onto us all.

Most recently I think his better judgment tended to prevail. He saw the terrible danger that Trump representes to our freedom and our standing on the world scene and strongly spoke against the Trump Fascism.

I think that at this moment in time, freedom and liberty are less secure without McCain around.

I’m curious where America would be if 2000 John McCain wasn’t Roved, won the nomination and then Presidency.

And right on cue, Arizona GOP senate candidate Kelli Ward accuses John McCain of dying in order to push a "negative narrative" about her.

Shit, should I have posted this in the "Day without stupid" thread?

Here are some more:

"It's a sad day for a lib when a RINO lapdog dies for sure. As for me, I'm celebrating with a fine bottle of scotch and a steak."

"Here's what I have to say about John McCain....
There, all done.
My mom always told me. If you have nothing nice to say about someone, don't say anything about them at all."

"Poor John is dead from disease he got in his head. Perhaps it explains his compromised brains when governing up to the end?"

"Well...I for one am proud to admit he was the last real Democrat that I voted for"

Not his dying, that he announced the end of treatment at a ‘questionable’ time. Man she must be real pissed that McCain went the full monty and died during her mammoth bus tour.

Yeah, McCain was at least an honorable man. I didn't like his Neocon views, but he at least had his own opinion on issues and at times fought for real immigration reform and more reasonable campaign finance rules. And he wouldn't kiss FFvC's ass...

I’m curious where America would be if 2000 John McCain wasn’t Roved, won the nomination and then Presidency.
That would have been an interesting difference.

Did you just impugn the integrity of Karl Rove?
