This is an atheist webpage, so yes that would be the point. We had 1000 years of Christian rule in Europe. Still refer to it as the dark ages.

The interesting question is whether the religion caused the expansion - I reckon to doubt whether bosses ever believed in gods except as backers, like investors. The Dark Ages is usually something like 410 - 800 as I understand it.

I would say the despots the US wanted to get rid of kept these fanatics under close watch and lock and key in well covered police states. When these regimes were removed, Al Qaeda, ISIS and other fanatics of their ilk filled the vacuum.

All they could muster was some dispute the slave owning Jefferson had over who were proper slaves.

The modern history of troubles begins with the discovery of oil and first the intrusion of the European powers and then the intrusion of the US into the ME.

Muslims have been the victims of decades of abuse from the West. Their democracies destroyed. Dictators hoisted upon them. The gaping wound that is the apartheid state of Israel.
