Leonard Cohen, the hugely influential singer and songwriter whose work spanned five decades, died at the age of 82. Cohen's label, Sony Music Canada, confirmed his death on the singer's Facebook page.

"It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away," the statement read. "We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief." A cause of death and exact date of death was not given.

Maybe now we can spend the weekend thinking about his music rather than Trump.

Here he is ruminating about his death on his album that was just released a few weeks ago.

So many people have written since has death about his music being mournful and melancholy. Some of it was, but I found much of it exhilarating because it didn't bs much: it was both sensitive and sensible

Leonard Cohen was a poet long before he discovered it was easier to sell a song, than a poem.

Most, and maybe all of his poems and songs are autobiographical, with a liberal application of poetic license. He was able to translate emotions into images which stay in the mind. The exhilarating songs celebrate finding love and the melancholy songs celebrate that moment when a man realizes what he has, is not what she wants.

If they hadn't given the noble prize to Dylan, Cohen would have been a good choice.
