Liberty University students faced $10 fine if they skipped Ted Cruz presidential speech

The university, founded by televangelist Jerry Falwell, requires its 13,500 residential students to attend as many as three events each week as part of a program called Convocation. There are sermons by guest pastors, performances from Christian entertainers and talks by leaders in many fields.

What happens if you don’t go?

The university’s student appeals court handbook has the list of consequences for various infractions. Missing Convocation is on the list. (A reprimand is a formal mark against a student’s record.) Here’s what the handbook says:

Each student should be familiar with these sanctions.

1 Reprimand:

Late for curfew (1 additional reprimand for each 30 minutes late)

Late for Convocation (1 additional reprimand for each 15 minutes late)

4 Reprimands + $10.00 Fine:

Absence from required meeting (Convocation, etc.)

Disturbance/non-participation during Convocation

Dress/hair code violation (male or female)

Cruz’s presidential announcement was scheduled as a Convocation event by the university, therefore the penalty for a student’s absence would be four reprimands and a $10 fine.

FREEEEDOMMM!!!

... isn't free. It costs $10.00 per student.

Per missed "convocation," which must be attended three times a week.

If a student consistently missed these forced gatherings, it could cost 120 bucks a month.

That's about 4 dollars a day. The cost of a cup of coffee (at Starbucks)

Wait...that sounds familiar.

For the cost of a cup of coffee a day, you too can help these poor young people break free from a life of oppression. Help them to be free from having to attend speeches that will not help them become better people. Help them become free of an institution which treats them like children despite the fact that they're actually adults. We here at Christian Student's Fund are dedicated to changing the lives of young people whose only crime was wanting an education while not having to leave Virginia. But they don't have to suffer. Your generous donation will defray the cost of their freedom from such terrible boredom and wasted time. I'm Sally Struthers...won't you please help?

The fuckers made the choice to go to Liberty. Screw 'em and screw Cruz... and the Republican Party!

I'd pay $10 to not listen to a Ted Cruz speech.

But would you pay to have someone else be saved from having to listen?

Just call the number at the bottom of your screen. These young people need help, and you can make a difference today. Right now. Don't delay. For your generous donation, we'll send you a picture of your Liberty University student, so that you can know your donation is going towards a worthy cause.

Call 1-800 TAX SCAM right now. That's 1-800 TAX SCAM. That number again, 1-800 TAX SCAM.

Does this University receive public funding?

If not, although their requirements are mindbogglingly ludicrous, I'm finding it hard to drum up sympathy. If you voluntarily join a club that will curtail your freedom and force you to do boring, shit things for no reason and then fine you if you don't, you probably have a mental illness. Actually, I do have sympathy for the mentally ill.

This isn't that unusual. If you invite a big name speaker, and the auditorium is half empty, it's embarrassing. So many institutions use variations on this tactic to ensure that the auditorium is full, and that they can continue to invite famous and/or influential people to speak.

I'm not saying it's right, but it is quite common.

May for famous and/or influential people. We are talking about Ted Cruz.

Well, Angela Davis recently spoke at UNC-Wilmington. Tickets were gone in about a half hour after they were made available. No threats necessary.
You mean the woman who gave a shotgun to a 17 year old in order for him to try to bust her murderer boyfriend out of a courthouse?

Ted Cruz sucks, but the Left has even weirder role models and idols. :banghead:

I wonder. When universities have talks those are usually open to the public which makes it much more likely you'll get good attendance. This was a university convocation. Are only Liberty students allowed to attend?

Could be that a "Christian college" is the only higher education mommy and daddy would pay for. I wonder how many Liberty students are attending relatively reluctantly.

I didn't know he was married to 'Legally Blonde'

I mean people show up for people they want to see without being extorted. Now if you want to discuss Angela Davis, I will start a thread just for you and we can speak truth, ...

well, at least I can. ;)

Even if you went, but chose not to cheer or clap - you still get fined.

Really this person I never heard of is a role model? Over an event that happened 45 years ago?

And that somehow is the same as blathering idiot Ted Cruz?
