Thursday brought a starting pitching appearance, where he threw six one-run innings against Detroit and drew two walks while hitting second in the lineup. (He tossed in an athletic fielding play for good measure.) Friday, back at DH, he homered twice, hours after he announced he’d participate in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. Saturday brought a homer. It was the first time in 100 years anyone had hit five homers and picked up a win within a week. As an exclamation point, the next day, Sunday, June 20, he homered again.

Here's the problem with baseball: The Angels have the two best players in MLB in Ohtani and Trout. And yet, they are in 4th place, 9 games back from the leader, even behind my team the Mariners! Trout by himself has a greater payroll than all the M's combined. And yet, the Angels suck.

Woah there, I wouldn't say the Angels suck. They actually have a pretty decent team. Their problem has been a weak bullpen. Trout has been out injured for an extended period which hasn't helped and so has Upton who I don't rate that highly anyway but he can generate runs in clutch situations. But sad to say I don't think they will make the playoffs again this season.

Diamondbacks, they suck.

Big name players bring in viewers (see Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers).

A few years back the Jays had a post-season drought that was becoming embarrassing, they made a few moves and made it to the ALCS. In a lot of cases I think there's a not-so-straightforward calculus going on about how to build your team - are we actually trying to win a title or just making business decisions? In my view the biggest problem in baseball is the lack of a salary cap, but at the end of the day this works for players rather than owners, which in my opinion is the way it should be.

In the NHL there is far more parity and you get a much more competitive and exciting product.

The Home Run Derby was a hoot. Angels phenom Shohei Ohtani took part and big things were expected from him. Alas, he couldn't get past the first round. He struggled to get into the rhythm to hit home runs and by the time he found his groove and started to blast them outta the park, he was too far behind to overtake his opponent but still managed to force a tie break. Poor Shohei looked gassed at the end but had a big smile on his face. I don't think he realized just how demanding it is. Pete Alonso won it pretty handily.

Mariners outplayed the Angels but Saturday's game had an exciting ending and yesterday showed some promise as Ohtani belted his 34th home run of the season. And unfortunately Fletcher's hitting streak came to an end after he went 0 for 5.

Sad to learn that Bill Freehan - a member of the 1968 Detroit Tigers World Series championship team - has died.

I was too young to remember that victory, and never met the man, but my dad did. I'm not sure how exactly it transpired, but my dad took Freehan and fellow '68 Tigers alum Jim Northrup on a fishing trip. Not long after, he came home with a baseball that was covered in autographs. According to my father, Freehan wanted to repay him for a successful adventure, and asked "do your sons like baseball?" He went down to Tiger Stadium, and had the entire team sign a ball for us. Mind you, this was in 1976, before autographed baseballs became a hot commodity. The stand out signatures were from legendary manager Ralph Houk, and this young rookie named Mark Fidrych...who went on to have an epic season with the Tigers.

A few years ago I was doing a recording session with Bob Uecker, and talked to him about Freehan and the '68 Tigers. He knew all those guys.

I wonder what ever happened to that baseball...

My dad actually took me to a game that season. I idolized Bill Freehan. I bought the book he wrote.

In it, he said most players really didn't want to play in the all star game. If you weren't picked for the game, you got a nice 3 day weekend off work.

In 1968 I was living in St. Louis. I remember that World Series well. Denny McClain was a 30 game winner for the Tigers. Mickey Lolich was their lefthanded star starter. Al Kaline and Norm Cash were their star hitters.
The Cardinals had won the previous W.S. Bob Gibson was their star starter, he had an era of 1.12 in 1968 - he was almost unhittable. The Cards had Curt Flood, Lou Brock and Orlando Cepeda. Yet the Tigers pulled out a 4-3 Series win.

Pitching has been brutal, badly beaten up by SD last night, walked in three runs. One of the runs scored after pitcher threw FIVE straight balls but umpire gave the pitcher a very generous strike call on ball four. Hard to watch. But after being 8-0 down the Angels came back to make things interesting. SD have faded badly lately.

Dodgers and Giants have been in an epic division race all season long.



Both 100-win teams, and they've been within a couple of games of each other most of the time. Dodgers were in first in much of April, but dropped behind by May and were never in first again until briefly at the beginning of this month. Padres got a sniff at the race early, leading in mid May, but took a dive beginning in June, now over 20 games back. The Giants have led most of the way by far, but mostly no more than by 2. They simply refuse to lose and fall behind. No matter that the Dodgers made perhaps their best trade in their history (pending the outcome of the season and the careers of the traded minor leaguers), acquiring Max Sherzer and Trea Turner at the beginning of August, with the two of them having arguably been their best players since then. Dodgers do have an obscene payroll and have deepity depth, but they needed it, having lost significant playing days of several top players due to injury, and lost one starting pitcher due to off the field numbnuttery (at best).

Giants are 2 games up today with 4 to go, so should win it, but if they don't, the Dodgers can thank these recency-biased late inning at bats from last night.

Giants have had their injuries too and did just lose maybe their best hitter Belt for this last week.

On the other hand, Dodgers have a key player knucklehead like this one who is worry for other reasons.

Fantastic game at Chavez Ravine last night. Sherzer had an off night but an what an eight inning that was. Incredibly, Cody Bellinger came off the IL and scored a home run. Before going on the IL he was batting <200. I reckon the haircut had something to do with it.

And Ohtani still produces magic, two triples in one game. That lad can motor.

Buehler likewise was on a roll, then had a couple bad outings. But he's bounced back. The Cy Young should be interesting this year.

Urias is another who had a recent bad game. They haven't been able to rest anybody much because of the tight race. Kershaw is a big question mark coming off the injured list.

They played Bellinger more than he really earned this year, but he said he's feeling good now so we shall see.

Really been impressed with Scherzer though. I mostly just pay attention to the Dodgers, so I don't know how how good other players are. Didn't know how good Bettis was till he got there. Now consider him their best player even if others have better stats.

Oh, one team I was following this year was the Angels just to see Ohtani at bats. With those triples, he is officially Mays like now.

Dang, Trea Turner is on fire. Dodgers will face the Cardinals on Wednesday for a one and done wild card game. I fancy our chances.

On August 1, LA was 3 games behind. Since then, they went 63-43 or 0.768 and still couldn't finish ahead of SF who went 65-39 or 0.724.

It will be painful to lose the one gamer, but at least they get that chance, compared to the pre-wild card days.

Tight, intense NL wild card game. So many 3-2 counts, plenty of clutch fielding by St. Louis, a couple of steals on Molina. Scherzer struggled but got outs he needed, still had to come out way earlier than ideal. Wainwright much better, but maybe pulled too early. Could have had a different ninth setup maybe.

Scherzer continues to impress with his near psychotic intensity. Never seen somebody so wound up on the bench. He paces around like a future workplace shooter.

And he goes drunk and shirtless for his live interview. Red flag or just a lol?

That was not a fun game to watch, kinda boring up until the closing stages. Bellinger is useless at the plate and has been for some time. Pretty funny to see Dodger stadium quite sparse at the start and the commentator said something about getting anywhere in LA at 5:00pm is a nightmare never mind a playoff game at Chavez Ravine. But later it was a full house. And the only folks in masks were the catchers, ump and a few worry warts.

Giants take game 1, shutting out the Dodgers 4-0. Dodger bats kept quiet by a very good young pitcher. Bellinger, wtf. Changes for tonight but he’s still in the line up.

Belli came through with the key hit on Saturday. Nearly every Dodger sucked on Friday, can't single him out there. He also got on base three times in the Wild Card, getting the crucial walk and steal in the 9th with 2 outs.

Always love when Urias pitches, even without the best stats, he gets the best run support consistently. He even helps himself out at times like on Saturday. And nice to see and hear so many LA fans in SF.

Feeling good with Scherzer at home next. Game four is up in the air though, neither starter has been named. They've played each other even all year, so expect it to go 5.

Scherzer showed up, but so did SF defense and SF weather, couldn't get a hit by Crawford or hit anything out for the wind. Still think it will go 5.

Another tight, intense elimination game for Dodgers. Belli comes through in SF again. He's hitting .290 in postseason. Most of their better stats players are flailing, most notably the 2 Turners, and notably excepting Betts who's on fire so far. Bullpen is killing it, may be the main advantage next round, especially with the addition of the new young closer Max Scherzer. That blown call on last play was fitting for a season of bad calls in their games, but really, Scherzer wasn't going to lose that game no matter.

Very fitting ending for two evenly matched teams, tied 1-1 going to the 9th, and ended up 12-12 head to head overall. They had the highest combined wins ever for any two opponents in a series. Their first ever playoff matchup, they are seldom good in the same year, only a couple years have been in postseason at same time.

This is almost good enough for me, just to knock out SF for the year, but they better not be thinking that. Amusing contrast between Betts and Scherzer postgame. Scherzer once again going shirtless stomping around the field. Betts very calm and reserved in interviews. When asked on field about celebrating with team, Betts says he's sure they're all drinking beer in the clubhouse, but he's got to get ready for the next game. Jeezus, last night the Dodgers had two run lead twice only for the Braves to claw back level. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, two out with a runner on base, Seager couldn't get a handle on a hard hit ground ball and the runner scored to end the game. Roberts threw everything he had at that game including an injured Justin Turner and still couldn't hold on. Ugh.

Going to have win this the hard way. Roberts being too cute with the bullpen, messing with what had been working great already, switched Jansen's and Treinen's innings in the first game, then has Urias pitch 8th in game 2. Why???

Been watching the other series to scout out which cheater is the better cheater, but wtf is going on with little Kiké Hernandez? 15 hits in 5 games, including 3 hrs in 2 games against Houston.

Well, well, well. Bellinger comes up clutch to hit a three run home run to tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth before the go ahead run came in a few batters later to win the game 5-6. Braves’ pitcher Morton had a shaky start giving up two runs early which was good news for the Dodgers as he was pretty solid otherwise. The bullpens will face off tonight at a more suitable 5:08pm. The sun won’t be so bothersome (hopefully) as it was yesterday causing a costly error for Lux in center field.

Dodger fans leave too early once again, and for what, to get out of the lot early to deal with 5pm traffic???

Cody ".165" Bellinger saves their sorry asses again. The Turners are still awful. Justin is at least dealing with an injury, but batting champ Trea has no excuse. Nice to see Taylor finally steal a base this time in the 8th of a tie game, when he failed to even try to do so in game 1 when tied in the 9th. They are also clearly missing Muncy's bat, who could have also shortened the SF series. That bad luck freak injury is also why Lux was playing centerfield instead of Bellinger.

If the Dodgers do go on to lose, I will be cancelling Roberts for the bullpen meddling in game 2, especially if Urias struggles today after his criminally needless outing on Sunday.

In the other game, .235 Jason Castro saved Houston who were tied with 2 outs and 2 strikes in the 9th. Alex Cora may have gotten too cute himself by bringing in Eovaldi to start the inning. Houston went on to score 7 runs with 2 outs to even the series.

What a disaster last night was. Elimination game tonight and I don’t think the Dodgers will be able to contain Rosario. He’s a beast.

Urias was off (see Roberts), the whole team is really, only 4 hits, Lux flubbed in the field again. They were down 3-1 last year, so not out of the question, but this Braves team may be better than that one. And they don't have home field this time (was neutral field last year though), even though LA finished with 18 more wins.

My goodness, what a game. Dodgers pitcher Crazy Joe Kelly didn't make it out the first inning after giving up two runs, injured apparently. But after that, the Dodger bullpen completely subdued the Braves bats. Dodger utility man Chris Taylor had the game of his life, he hit three home runs, driving in an impressive six runs in the 11-2 win. So it's off to Atlanta for game six. Oh my, anything can happen in this wonderful game.

Dodgers depth bottomed out, came against too many injuries. The pennant race probably hurt too, couldn't rest any arms down the stretch, and really can't ever just shut down and settle for a wild card one-gamer. I say, let's switch to 60 game seasons every year.

A disappointing outcome. Rosario had been a thorn in the Dodgers’ side and he did it again. Dodgers had runners on base a few times but couldn’t get the runs in. Seager was a disappointing 0-4. Betts and Turner also didn’t produce. Dodger bullpen performed very well but a lack of offense screwed us.

Cleveland will be Cleveland.

The Guardians’ roller derby team is based in Parma and has competed since 2014. It registered its name with the Ohio Secretary of State in January 2017. Its top foe next season is expected to be the Pittsburgh Undead.

“The Indians only offered to pay a nominal amount, likely no more than 15 minutes of annual team revenue,” the lawsuit says.
In fact, the baseball club offered the roller derby team “an amount that was just four figures,” said Edward Colbert, an attorney for the roller derby team. “Our client rejected it immediately.”

The lawsuit said the baseball club “surreptitiously filed” a trademark application for the Cleveland Guardians’ name in the East African island nation of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, an attempt to prevent people from learning the name of the team.

MLB has begun postponing games amid a lockout that has gone on for more than two months. It remains to be seen if the league will cancel games that count. The league announced Friday that the beginning of its spring training schedule has been postponed until March 5, at the earliest. All tickets will reportedly be fully refunded to fans as collective bargaining agreement negotiations continue with the MLB Players Association.
