Russian built a large outdoor Mark generator during the Cold War as a missile dense system. Lightning creating aan EMP to disrupt missile electronics. Saw it on a show. It took the outputs of a power plant to operate.

Lightning generators are not new. Boeing has one for testing aircraft. In the show it was said the lightning could be as much as 600 feet. Two football fields.
