A Catholic priest was found guilty Friday of raping dozens of children and a sled dog in the Canadian Arctic, where he worked as a missionary for decades. The Belgian-born Eric Dejaeger, 67, was convicted of 31 counts of sexual offenses against children and one count of bestiality. At the start of the his trial last November in Iqaluit, the capital of Canada's northernmost Nunavut territory, Dejaeger acknowledged and pleaded guilty to eight out of 80 original charges. Justice Robert Kilpatrick ruled the evidence had been weakened by the passage of time, and whittled down the number in the indictment. The defense and prosecution have 30 days to appeal the decision. Otherwise, Dejaeger is expected to be back in court in January for sentencing. The Iqaluit court clerk told AFP that more than 20 victims from the Inuit hamlet of Igloolik, on the shores of the Northwest Passage, testified at the emotionally charged trial.

The sad thing is that the raped children are going to be mostly overlooked and everyone's going to focus on the dog.

I agree. I remember a peculiar person living near me who was caught having sex with a dog, a four legged one, not the unattractive human female version, which got him admitted to an institution. His other peculiar behaviour was ignored - things such as sleeping in the cemetery across the road from my parents place etc.

Funny thing is, I don't really see what the problem is when it comes to the dog, unless the dog wasn't his, and he somehow put it off it's normal behavior to the point it no longer did it's job... I've known plenty of people who've at one point or another done things with dogs, their own and ones belonging to others. It's not even a universal taboo! Plenty of cultures all around the world could care less. But instead of being remembered as a dirty, piece of shit pedophile child rapist, he'll be remembered as 'dogfucker'. A title that people will stop caring about once the taboo on cross-species sex is gone.

Well, that's kinda the problem when it comes to the dog, isn't it?
We DO have a taboo on cross-species sex at this point.

So the fact that someone who has taken responsibility to provide moral guidance to a community has violated that taboo is kind of a key indicator that there's a problem with a system that grants people moral authority without quite filtering out moral weaknesses. The point is not that not everyone finds this horrific. The point would be that it could be assumed that the organization he represented found it horrific, and he did it anyway.

There's the old joke, 'what do you call the guy with the lowest passing grade in Med School?' 'Doctor.'

Well, what do you call the guy that graduated seminary with a serious sexual perversion for __(fill in the blank)____?
'Father.'

Most normal people don't see animals, at least not all animals, as merely objects but as agents worth of their own moral consideration.

You have got to admire the POPE's PR machine in all this , just imagine if the Teamsters Union or the Socialist Alliance had this many peddle files hiding in their midst . The crazy press would go troppo. But the good old cathlic faith gives it a bit of a go four hundred odd years and hardly a murmur in the press until recent times but now it's been neatly sidelined by some good news stories about terrorists and how they failed to beat the combined airforces of the world.
