So basically, Trump is told there won't be a party to which he wasn't invited.
Party? Seeriously? I'd say a better analogy would be it's like punishing a kid by telling him he can't do his homework.

+1 Agree. This is a very stupid move. It will backfire hard and only plays directly into Trumputin’s tiny, tiny hands. The lie that he’s anti-establishment (or that there actually exists an “establishment”) just got a massive shot in the arm. Look, he’s destroying the establishment just like he promised is how this will be spun.
The smarter move would have been to have him speak and then openly challenged/heckled him (parliamentary style) during the speech. Fluster the fucker on national TV when he can’t leave and none of his handlers are standing by etc.
If Trump decides to go on his own State of Union without congress and rent out a football stadium for his address, he will have no one there but pro-Trump people but still have national coverage of the event. Big backfire for the democrats.
You mean he might have to delay the SOTU? Like, uh, like Nancy predicted? That'll be good for Pelosi.Good luck in the amount of time available.
You mean, he might have to open the government? Like, uh...I'm not certain where the money would come from to even pay for such an event.

I don't know. I think Trump likes the SOTU. It gives him an opportunity to look all Presidential and have everyone else sit there for a while listening to him talk. The guy loves theater and it's one of the biggest stages a President has.
Also, I believe he got really good reviews last year because everyone was all starry-eyed and impressed about how he managed to talk for twenty minutes without accidentally declaring war on Bolivia or something.
The SOTU is Trump's favourite thing - an event that's all about him. Pelosi is threatening to take away one of his favourite things.

The SOTU is, by law, something that is supposed to be delivered to Congress, so if he tries some other platform, by definition it would not be the SOTU. Nancy has already said he could just deliver it in writing. From reports, the speech would have largely been about blaming Democrats for the shutdown, so why should they give him a big national platform to do that?
Yes, he could go somewhere else and give his speech. But he already does that with all his campaign rallies, which even FOX stopped covering live. He could try delivering it from the Oval Office, but he already delivered a speech whining about the shutdown from there. And using the Oval Office doesn't give the opportunities to show off guests referenced in the speech like you see in a regular SOTU.
What this move does do is piss off Trump a lot. He is an attention whore, so denying him a big national platform where all the people in power, and the country as a whole, are supposed to pay attention to him has got to infuriate him. It also puts pressure on him to find a solution to the shutdown. Baby is being ignored until he behaves, and baby does not like being ignored.
Another benefit of this is one less big news day featuring Cheetolini.
The Constitution requires that the President "shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union". It does not require an annual speech before Congress.
The guys who wrote it did not give annual speeches before Congress.
Wow! Good on Pelosi! It should generate a lot of momentum in the Democratic party. It will also avoid a very ugly spectacle should Trump be given the attention he craves going wild in the People's House. Very smart I say.

I think the opposite could be true. Won't it just garner more attention to him when he does it from the whitehouse, and give him another us vs them talking point to rile up his base with?

It could be a written report, but it's always to or before Congress.

This will be a unique talking point.another us vs them talking point to rile up his base with?
Yeah, a third grader would have given them the jet, but taken all the chocolate milk out of the minifridge.I think it's beneath a third grader.

So, he can pretty much do whatever he wants, wherever he wants to do it, before whomever he wants, whenever he feels like doing it (including, probably, never), just so long as he emails congress a copy.
He could send Nancy Pelosi a copy of The Art of the Deal inscribed "To Nancy, the state of the union is Great Again, yours Donald"
Trump is never at a loss for talking points. But the entire government gathering together in one audience is a spectacle that's much harder to ignore.
You almost have to watch in case someone yells out motherfucker. And he'd likely be out to encourage that or some similar outburst of indignation which would bring the Democrats down to his level. At least in the eyes of his base.
