It certainly isn’t easy to find murder victims in the US by date. After a couple tries, the best I could figure was to search with {killed "June 5" 2017 <each state>}. Yeah, 50 searches, and stopped at 2 pages of browsing over only links that had "June 5". So, I pulled a crude listing/linking, based on yesterday, June 5th. Now I tried to only include clear homicides (no suicides or hit-n-run auto accidents). I tried to only include those charged on that day if the homicide was emergent, or the murder happening on that day. I included accidental shootings as they are so covfefe stupid. I’m sure I missed quite a few as well, like if the Google brief hinted at accident over murder.

I think the below is 39 for the day of 5 June, 2017. It is amazing how a minor crime event is major news from Paris, but we are numb to the daily US carnage...

OK, but it sounds like a number of those murderers could be white people, so it's not like these are legitimate news stories.

Well sure, about 45% of US murders are committed by whites. If you include Hispanics.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here. It's not just the number of murders that's relevant. It's the sense of "this could happen to me too" that goes with a random mass killing in a public place. Many (but not all) of the victims in your list are friends, family members, or otherwise already acquainted with the murderer. This doesn't strike fear into people unless they happen to know someone who is violent enough to potentially take their life. Others look like robberies gone wrong, and those should only strike fear in the subset of people who are especially vulnerable to being robbed--business owners in poor urban areas, mostly. But everybody goes to concerts and eats at restaurants. Everybody's ridden a bus or caught a train. That's what makes something terrorism as opposed to just a guy killing his ex-wife's boyfriend. And it's why people aren't convinced by the argument that you're more likely to be eaten by a shark than die in a terrorist attack; I can avoid 100% of shark attacks by simply not swimming at the beach, but I have no way of avoiding the next terror attack unless I never leave my house.

The effect of terror attacks is to create constant fear and uncertainty. Thus the psychological impact is greater than the regular loony tunes 'topping people.'

everybody goes to concerts and eats at restaurants.

I'm devastated to learn that I'm nobody. :(
Yeah, I used to go to concerts 4-5 times a week back when the Avalon Ballroom and the Old Fillmore were running concerts in San Fran. But I haven't been to a ticketed concert in over 20 years.
I still eat in restaurants a few times a year, though... so maybe I'm actually somebody, but teetering on the edge of non-existence.

Switching off the TV however will not stop terrorism.

Switching off the TV however will not stop terrorism.

It might, actually.

A major contributor to the elimination of the notorious violence at English football matches was a media agreement not to show the violence on TV.

Young men being ultra-violent for the fame it brings, regardless of personal harm, can be kept from violence by having their actions widely ignored.

What's the point of committing a terrorist atrocity that only the handful of victims and onlookers, plus the investigating police, know about?

It will operate in the same way that guerrilla warfare was conducted in the past when TV or media didn't exist.
The Black Flags of Rome, an ISIS handbook is about a war on several fronts.
It is also a grass roots movement so it just means it will detonate more devices in more places in localised war.

Approximately 23% of the world population identifies as Muslim. But, since September 11, Islamist groups have conducted about 20% of terrorist attacks worldwide. Thus, terrorist attacks are – historically and today – less likely to be conducted by a Muslim than by a non-Muslim group.

Interesting. Do Muslim groups nonetheless still commit a plurality of terror attacks, or is there another group that conducts a larger % of them?

Where do these two get these numbers from? What is their methodology and definition of terrorism?
It smells like apologetics for Islam that is so widespread among the Left.
I mean, it's pretty much only Muslims who fly planes into buildings or bomb tweens at pop concerts or drive "trucks of peace" into crowds.
And many terrorist attacks in the Muslim world are Muslim-on-Muslim terrorism. Shiites blow up Sunni mosques and vice versa for example. Did these two researchers completely discount those? Even their link to a terrorism database that is supposed to show only 20% of terrorism is committed by Muslims has two Muslim-on-Muslim attacks in Iraq under "this date in terrorism". I could not find any backing for the 20% claim on that site.

In fact, if you look at heat maps of terrorism, it is concentrated in places like Iraq/Syria, Afghanistan/Pakistan, and other areas that are predominately Muslim or have large Muslim populations (who do you think is responsible for most of these dots across Western Europe even though they are <10% of the population?) So again, where do these two get their numbers?

If we do you a solid and just take your gif for granted as being correct (How does one quantify intensity and what does the group who made this consider a terrorist attack?) doesn't this gif undercut your point about the danger of islamic terrorism in Europe and the US? Why yes, I believe it does.

If we do you a solid and just take your gif for granted as being correct
- It's a jpg. Stop mis-formating, you gif-normative jpeg-phobe. :tonguea:
- It's taken from a site linked to by the article in question. It's supposed to prove only 20% of terrorist attacks are committed by Muslims, but does the exact opposite.
- This is the about page of the group who made the heat map, btw. It's run by University of Maryland.

(How does one quantify intensity and what does the group who made this consider a terrorist attack?)
As they say, "a combination of incident fatalities and injuries". Not sure how they weigh one against the other though.
And if you look at US map, there are yellow dots in Chattanooga and Charleston. Those are most certainly the attack by a Muslim terrorist on two Chattanooga military installations and the shooting at the Mother Emanuel church in Charleston. The orange dot in Southern California is the San Bernardino attack, perpetrated by Muslim husband and wife team. Not sure what the other dots are, but it should give you some idea what they consider a terrorist attack.
doesn't this gif undercut your point about the danger of islamic terrorism in Europe and the US? Why yes, I believe it does.
Compared to living in Syria or Afghanistan or the Nigeria/Chad border region? Yes, Europe and US are much safer. That does not mean the danger of Islamic terrorism is insignificant, especially when compared to still rather low population percentage of Muslims in the Western World. It does show though that more Muslims means more Islamic terrorism.
Third world has all sorts of dysfunctions that are present to much lower level in the developed Western countries. That does not mean those issues still present in the West are insignificant or that they should be ignored. And we certainly should not be making the problem worse by importing large quantities of unvetted Muslims from the very countries where terrorism and extremism are exceedingly common.

But back to my question: does anybody have any backing for the claim that only 20% of terrorist attacks are committed by Muslims? Because judging from that heat map, it would appear well over 50% is likely committed by Muslims.
