NYC's 6th borough? The US's 51st state? The SU's 16th republic? Australia's 7th state?

New York City has five sub-cities or boroughs: Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.  Sixth borough refers to a possible additional one, like the nearby New Jersey waterfront or nearby parts of Westchester County, or else to places inhabited by lots of ex-New-Yorkers or with some other connection to NYC, like Philadelphia PA, South Florida, and Puerto Rico.

The United States currently has 50 states, with various nominations for a  51st state. Possible additional states like the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and nations with close connections like Canada and Israel.

The Soviet Union had 15 republics, much like US states, and Bulgaria and Mongolia were close enough politically to be called 16th republics.

NYC trivia: when the 5 boroughs were formed, the Bronx and Manhattan were NYC. The other boroughs demanded they separate, lest they be too powerful.

That's totally absurd, since Manhattan's taller buildings are built down to the local bedrock, something typical of tall-building construction. Manhattan's bedrock is mica schist, a good strong rock.
